GStreamer can send the encoded stream; playlist scheduling and clean transitions require additional application logic. There is no universal ready-to-run command for heterogeneous playlists, because available plugins and source formats vary by system.
How the GStreamer-to-YouTube pipeline fits together
The output path for a single video is conceptually:

In GStreamer, uridecodebin or a filesrc ! decodebin arrangement can expose decoded tracks. Build separate video and audio branches, convert and encode each to a format suitable for the chosen output profile, link both branches to flvmux, and connect the mux output to rtmpsink. The sink accepts FLV content and sends it to a streaming server over RTMP; it is provided by the GStreamer RTMP plugin in Bad Plug-ins (GStreamer rtmpsink documentation).

That describes component roles, not a tested end-to-end playlist command. Encoder element names, plugin availability, caps, and RTMPS support depend on the GStreamer build and host. Check the elements installed on the target machine before writing a pipeline around them. GStreamer’s gst-launch-1.0 is a basic pipeline launch and debugging tool; an application using the GStreamer API is the appropriate foundation for playlist control and long-running behavior (GStreamer gst-launch-1.0 documentation).
Set the YouTube ingest profile first
Create the live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a live stream and open its encoder settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values provided there rather than an endpoint copied from an old guide.
- Keep the stream key out of logs, shell history, source control, and screenshots. YouTube treats it like a password and stream address. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder (YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; YouTube: Manage live stream settings).
YouTube’s encoder workflow is to start sending the stream, check the preview, and—for a scheduled stream—click Go live when ready. The encoder sending data and the event being publicly live are distinct stages. For broadcasts under 12 hours, YouTube says streams are automatically archived; for recurring or longer-running programming, check the current Live Control Room workflow and archive behavior rather than assuming one connection can run indefinitely (YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

Choose a compatible output profile
YouTube’s encoder guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For a conservative starting point, use H.264 video and AAC audio if the necessary encoders are installed. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP; use it when the installed GStreamer and librtmp stack supports the endpoint configuration YouTube supplies (YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Bitrate must match the target resolution, frame rate, and codec. For one specific reference point, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps with H.264 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those figures do not apply automatically to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs; consult YouTube’s settings table for the intended output. Leave upload-bandwidth headroom and monitor stream health rather than assuming a configured bitrate guarantees a stable connection.

Build and test a single-file stream
- Check the installed plugins. Confirm that the target system has the needed source demuxers and decoders, converters, selected video and audio encoders,
flvmux, andrtmpsink. In particular, a minimal GStreamer install may not includertmpsink, because it is in Bad Plug-ins. - Choose one short, rights-cleared test clip. Start with a single file, not a playlist. Identify its tracks and formats, and decide the resolution, frame rate, and bitrates for the normalized output.
- Construct the two media branches. Decode the source, convert and normalize video and audio, then encode each branch to the selected YouTube-compatible format. Make the output caps explicit where needed so the mux receives compatible streams.
- Mux and connect. Link the encoded tracks to
flvmuxand send its FLV output tortmpsink, configured with the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Avoid putting the secret key in persistent command history or diagnostics. - Inspect YouTube’s preview before going public. Check picture, motion, audio, resolution, stream health, and upload stability. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio/video quality before the broadcast (YouTube encoder settings).
- End the test cleanly. Stop the sender and follow the current Live Control Room workflow for the event. Confirm the resulting recording if archive behavior matters to your use case.
The GStreamer documentation’s simple test-video example illustrates the relationship between an encoded stream, flvmux, and rtmpsink; it is not a complete YouTube-ready audio/video playlist setup. Do not treat a pipeline that merely launches as proof that the ingest profile or event lifecycle is correct.
Implement the playlist as application logic
A playlist of unrelated videos is not just a sequentially named file source. GStreamer’s multifilesrc reads a sequentially named set of files into buffers. Its documentation does not establish it as an arbitrary video playlist scheduler that independently decodes varied files or guarantees clean timestamps and transitions (GStreamer multifile plugin index).

For a real playlist, use an application-level controller or higher-level playback/URI API. The controller should select the next URI, handle end-of-stream, open and decode the next item, normalize its tracks to the output profile, and keep the outgoing stream coherent. The design goal is one stable encoded/muxed output feeding one RTMP connection while the source media changes behind it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not promise seamless switching until you have tested timestamp behavior, encoder reinitialization, audio gaps, and YouTube ingest on the target machine. Files can differ in codec, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and duration; normalize these deliberately and test transitions between each meaningful combination. A command-line launch may help debug an individual pipeline, but playlist transitions, recovery, and long-running scheduling call for application-level control.

Copyright, scheduling, and stream lifecycle checks
- Use content you have the right to broadcast. A live encoder does not grant permission to use the music, footage, or other material in a playlist. Clear the rights for every item and consider YouTube’s copyright checks and policies before scheduling a public event.
- Coordinate sending with the event. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and confirm the preview before using the Live Control Room’s Go live control. Stop the encoder and end the event using the current workflow.
- Plan for finite stream sessions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single connection is an indefinite broadcast mechanism; verify current lifecycle and archive behavior for the event you intend to run.
- Protect credentials throughout operations. Restrict access to the stream key and rotate it if compromised. Update the application after a reset.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
rtmpsink cannot be found |
The RTMP plugin is absent from the installed GStreamer packages. | Install or enable the GStreamer Bad Plug-ins package appropriate to the system, then verify that the element is available. |
| Pipeline fails with negotiation or caps errors | A decoder, converter, encoder, or mux branch cannot agree on formats, or the expected plugin is missing. | Check installed elements and negotiated caps. Test video and audio branches separately, then explicitly normalize the formats passed to the encoders and mux. |
| No YouTube preview or connection | Incorrect or stale ingest URL/key, unsupported protocol configuration, or a network/stream-health problem. | Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm RTMP versus RTMPS support, inspect stream health, and verify network access. Reset a key if it may have leaked. |
| Black picture or missing audio | A source track was not linked, converted, encoded, or muxed as expected. | Test each branch, inspect the encoded/muxed output, and confirm both expected tracks appear in the YouTube preview. |
| Audio gaps, timestamp jumps, or broken picture at a playlist boundary | The next file’s timing, format, or decoder/encoder state differs from the previous item. | Normalize the next source and investigate timestamp continuity and encoder reinitialization in the application. Test each transition on the actual target build before relying on it live. |
| Stream health degrades or bitrate fluctuates | The configured target is too demanding for the available connection, or the source/output settings do not match the intended YouTube profile. | Use the YouTube bitrate table for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec; test upload stability, leave bandwidth headroom, and monitor stream health. |
| A launch command works but cannot manage the broadcast | gst-launch-1.0 is a basic launch/debugging tool, not a playlist scheduler or robust long-running controller. |
Move selection, end-of-stream handling, reconnect behavior, and operational monitoring into a GStreamer application. |
