To send a Liquidsoap radio stream to YouTube Live, combine your audio source with a visual, encode the result with FFmpeg, and send it to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A still image is the simplest visual. Prefer YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL when your Liquidsoap/FFmpeg setup supports it; the Liquidsoap book’s example uses RTMP, so do not assume its sample endpoint is the one to use for your stream.
What you need
- A working Liquidsoap audio source, such as a playlist.
- A visual source: a still image is suitable for a radio-style stream; a video file is another option.
- An FFmpeg-enabled Liquidsoap output configured to encode video and audio.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the current stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
A radio-only source needs a video component for this YouTube video-stream workflow. Liquidsoap’s official book demonstrates adding one with source.mux.video.

Configure Liquidsoap and FFmpeg
This is the configuration pattern shown in the Liquidsoap book. It illustrates the workflow; it is not a verified configuration for every current Liquidsoap or FFmpeg build.
radio = playlist("~/Music")
video = single("image.jpg")
radio = source.mux.video(video=video, radio)
ykey = string.trim(file.contents("youtube-key"))
url = "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/#{ykey}"
enc = %ffmpeg(format="flv",
%video(codec="libx264", pixel_format="yuv420p",
b="300k", preset="superfast", r=25, g=50),
%audio(codec="libmp3lame", samplerate=44100, b="160k"))
output.url(fallible=true, url=url, enc, radio)
Choose a visual source
In the example, single("image.jpg") supplies a static image. Replace it with a video source if you want moving visuals; the book documents a video-file alternative. A moving visual adds video encoding and bandwidth demands compared with a still image.
#1 Best Overall
- [XLR Mic Input] One XLR microphone input interface is set on the gaming audio mixer, which is great to up your audio quality with your XLR setup. The XLR mixer is a stepping stone to upgrade your live streaming. Audio mixer offered built-in 48V phantom power which opens up more choices for mics. Directly use it with your condenser microphone but do not solve added peripherals. (NOT available for USB mic)
- [Individual Channel Control] Gaming audio mixer for one mic recording with smooth volume slider fader take your streaming recording to a whole new level with full pleasure. Four independent channels set on the DJ mixer give audio volume of the MICROPHONE, LINE IN, HEADPHONE, and LINE OUT channels individual control. Configurable on the PC audio mixer instead of just operating on your game or streaming software.
- [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. Real-time feedback between speaking and hearing will not distract your attention, which encourage you to speak more confidently. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.
- [Sound Effects] The computer sound mixer supports four pre-recorded customized button that can be recorded and activated at the press of button to post production. 6 kinds of voice changing modes change your output style. 12 auto tune changes the tone of your voice. The podcast mixer being able to add different and fun effects is a huge bonus for your streaming or game voice.
- [Controllable Vibrant RGB] RGB button on the audio mixer DJ meets different live streaming themes. Lights on the video mixer is vibrant but not harsh on your eyes. Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
Keep the stream key out of the script
The example reads the key from a separate youtube-key file and trims whitespace with string.trim. This keeps the secret separate from the script and avoids accidental leading or trailing whitespace. Restrict access to the file and do not include its contents in shared scripts, logs, or screenshots.
Set encoding values for the stream
The example uses FLV output, H.264 video, MP3 audio at 44.1 kHz, a 25 fps frame rate, and a 300 kbps video bitrate. The book explicitly calls 300 kbps deliberately low and suggests roughly 2,000 kbps on a fast connection for better video quality. Treat those as illustrative values to tune, not a universal YouTube preset.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
YouTube lists MP3 or AAC audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check that your actual encoder output meets the current guidance; the book’s example does not show a keyframe setting.

- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current stream URL and key. Use the values shown in that stream’s settings, rather than assuming the URL in the Liquidsoap book’s example applies to your channel.
- Set the destination in your Liquidsoap configuration. The book uses
output.url. For encrypted ingestion, use the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room if your configured Liquidsoap/FFmpeg output supports RTMPS. - Start Liquidsoap and check Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed and inspect the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
- Publish the scheduled stream if required. Once the preview appears, click Go live if that stream’s settings require manual publishing. Some stream settings allow encoder start and stop to control the live state.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the encoder and end the stream in YouTube as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choices that affect the result
| Choice | Options | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Visual | Static image or video file | A still image is the simpler radio visual. A video adds motion but also video-source, encoding, and bandwidth considerations. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS | The Liquidsoap book demonstrates RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Use the current URL from Live Control Room and confirm your configured encoder supports it. |
| Audio codec | MP3 or AAC | YouTube lists both for RTMP/RTMPS. The Liquidsoap book’s example uses MP3. |
| Video bitrate | Tune to content and available upload bandwidth | The book’s 300 kbps example is deliberately low; it suggests around 2,000 kbps on a fast connection for better quality. These are examples, not universal requirements. |
Fix common problems
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
- Copy the stream URL and key again from the current Live Control Room settings, and check that the configured protocol matches the endpoint.
- If RTMPS reports certificate or timeout errors, confirm that the RTMPS URL is correct and that your encoder supports the configured connection. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance describes trying port 443 where needed.
The stream key may have been exposed
Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace the value in the separate file Liquidsoap reads. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

The stream arrives but looks poor
Inspect the video bitrate and encoder output. The book’s sample bitrate is a low illustrative value, not a quality target for every image or video. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health.
The encoder is running, but viewers cannot see the scheduled stream
Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. If the stream’s settings require manual publication, click Go live after the preview appears.

Copyright and live-stream responsibility
Using Liquidsoap to relay audio does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Before streaming music, recordings, or other material, confirm that you have the necessary rights and that the stream complies with YouTube’s policies. A continuous radio-style feed does not remove those obligations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without maintaining your own Liquidsoap/FFmpeg machine, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
