Match the model to the content: a finished film usually suits a rental or purchase, an ongoing library can support a subscription, and a live event can use pay-per-view. Before launch, check the platform’s fees, tax handling, download settings, and what happens to customer access if you leave.
Choose what you are selling before choosing a platform
Start by defining the product and the viewer’s expected access. A single finished film, a course, an evolving library, and a ticketed live event are different offers; the right payment model follows from that difference.

- Finished title: Decide whether viewers should rent it for a limited period or buy access. State clearly whether the purchase includes streaming only or a downloadable copy.
- Course or ongoing series: Decide whether viewers need access to a defined course or whether you will continue releasing material. A continuing library or series may make a recurring membership more useful than repeated individual sales.
- Live event: Decide whether people are buying access to the live event, a replay, or both. Specify the replay window and access conditions before taking payment.
Write down the promised access in plain terms—what is included, when access starts, how long it lasts, whether downloads are allowed, and what happens if the service ends. That description should match the platform settings, checkout page, and customer support policy.

Pick the payment model that fits the video

Vimeo OTT documents subscriptions, rentals, purchases, live-event pay-per-view, and access to collections of past live events. Its documentation describes advertising as an Enterprise option requiring Google Ad Manager; post-roll or mid-roll ads require Google Ad Manager 360. Those are provider-stated capabilities and conditions, not a recommendation that ads will be profitable for a particular creator.

Compare platforms on the parts that affect your business
A video platform is more than a player. Compare the complete path from upload to viewer access, and calculate what you retain after deductions rather than comparing headline prices alone.
- Sales formats: Confirm the platform supports your required combination of subscriptions, rentals, purchases, live streaming, and replay or PPV access. Check whether each format is available on the plan you would actually use.
- Hosting and playback: Look for video ingestion, transcoding, adaptive delivery, and a storefront or branded viewing destination. Vimeo describes these capabilities for Vimeo OTT; confirm the current plan and implementation details with the provider.
- Checkout and payout: Check supported payment methods, payout timing, transaction deductions, refunds, and chargebacks. Estimate net proceeds for a real transaction in the regions where you expect to sell.
- Tax handling: Ask exactly which customer taxes the service calculates or remits and which reporting, registration, and income-tax responsibilities remain yours. A platform’s checkout tax feature does not determine all of a seller’s obligations.
- Downloads and offline viewing: Set the download policy before launch. Vimeo On Demand’s help documentation says enabling downloads after a purchase does not retroactively give that buyer download access.
- Content protection: Check supported DRM, plan eligibility, device compatibility, and setup effort. Vimeo lists FairPlay, Widevine, and PlayReady. Uscreen describes its DRM as beta and an add-on, and notes possible playback problems on some older devices, software versions, or restricted networks. DRM can restrict access; it cannot guarantee that copying is impossible.
- Portability and continuity: Review what you can export, how to move customers, and what viewers retain if you stop using the service or it closes. Make access duration and download rights explicit instead of relying on an assumption of permanent availability.
Vimeo OTT
Vimeo’s OTT documentation describes monthly or yearly subscriptions, rentals, purchases, live-event PPV, and replay collections. It says a seller can configure a purchase for streaming or direct downloading, while rentals provide time-limited streaming without direct downloads. Vimeo also describes an integrated content workflow for ingestion and transcoding, adaptive streaming, payment processing via Stripe, and options for transactional sales, advertising, and DRM. These are vendor descriptions; feature availability and terms should be verified for the plan and region you intend to use.

Uscreen
Uscreen’s product information lists subscriptions, group subscriptions, trials, individual video or course sales, PPV, time-limited rentals, donations, and integrations including Stripe and PayPal. It also advertises local-currency pricing and tax collection at checkout. Its DRM help information describes DRM as a beta add-on and directs sellers to contact sales for pricing. Verify current plan terms, payment availability, and device compatibility with Uscreen before committing.

Vimeo’s seller guide states that Vimeo On Demand will shut down on November 20, 2026. It also says new subscriptions and renewals were disabled after September 21, 2026, and that buyer streaming access ends at shutdown. For purchases where downloads were enabled, buyers can download to a device. That makes Vimeo On Demand a poor starting point for a new long-term storefront as of October 3, 2026. If you already sell there, follow Vimeo’s current seller instructions and communicate clearly with buyers about access and downloads.

Set up the offer and test the buyer experience
- Define the offer: Write the title, description, audience, access type, duration, download policy, and refund or cancellation terms. For a course, list what is included; for an event, state the schedule and replay terms.
- Choose a platform and check its current terms: Confirm the sales model, storefront, delivery, payment support, payout timing, taxes, and export options against your needs. Ask the provider about unclear fees or regional restrictions before uploading or taking orders.
- Prepare the video and supporting material: Upload the finished video and add accurate titles, descriptions, thumbnails, captions or subtitles where available, and any course or event details the viewer needs. Use only footage, music, artwork, and other material you have the rights to sell or stream.
- Configure access and price: Set the subscription interval, rental window, purchase/download permissions, or PPV and replay access. Check what happens when a subscription is cancelled, a rental expires, or an event replay window closes.
- Preview the public sales page: Read it as a buyer. Make the price, billing frequency, access period, included content, and download status visible before checkout. Remove any wording that promises more access than the platform settings deliver.
- Test playback on intended devices: Complete a test purchase or use the platform’s preview tools, then check the page and video on common phones, computers, and connected-TV devices used by your audience. Confirm playback, captions, audio, login, and the support route. This is a practical launch check, not a guarantee of compatibility on every device or network.
- Promote the offer and monitor results: Share the sales page through channels where your audience already follows you. Track visits, completed payments, refunds, support requests, and actual payouts; do not assume a particular conversion rate or income from a platform’s feature list.
Calculate net proceeds, not just the checkout price
Use a transaction-level estimate before setting your price. Subtract platform or payment fees, applicable taxes, refunds, and any revenue share from the amount collected. Then verify the result against actual statements after launch.
As one illustration, Vimeo’s current seller guide, accessed October 3, 2026, gives an example of about $7.80 net from a $10 Vimeo On Demand sale to a New York viewer. Vimeo attributes the difference to a $0.48 transaction fee, $0.85 applicable tax, and $0.87 revenue share. This is a single provider example for that stated transaction, not a universal fee schedule or forecast for another seller, region, or platform.

For subscriptions, also consider the work needed to maintain the library and serve members over time. For a one-time title, account for customer support and any access period or download rights included in the sale. No platform feature can establish how many customers will buy; validate demand with your own audience and sales data.
