To sell a rare Blu-ray well, identify the exact release first, verify what comparable copies actually sold for, describe your copy with platform-compatible condition language and close-up photos, then price it from the amount you will keep after fees, postage, and packing. A high active asking price does not prove that a buyer will pay it, and the value of an unspecified Blu-ray cannot be estimated reliably until its title, edition, completeness, and condition are known.
The fee examples below are for US marketplace accounts and current official fee pages checked on October 13, 2026. Rates, category rules, shipping prices, and buyer charges can change, so confirm the schedule shown for your account immediately before listing.

1. Identify the exact Blu-ray before you price it
“Rare Blu-ray” is not a sufficient listing identity. A standard release, a first pressing, a numbered collector’s edition, a steelbook, a region-specific disc, and a box set can have completely different audiences and prices. Start by recording the release that is physically in your hands.

- Film, television program, or concert title.
- Distributor or label and release year.
- Format: standard Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, multi-disc set, or another format stated on the package.
- Region coding, if printed on the case or disc.
- Edition name, limited-edition wording, numbering, store-exclusive branding, or special packaging.
- Catalog number, barcode, and any other identifier printed on the spine, back cover, disc ring, or booklet.
- Number and type of discs included, including bonus discs.
- Packaging components: slipcover, rigid box, steelbook, booklet, art cards, poster, certificate, or other inserts.
Use the barcode and catalog number to distinguish near-identical releases. A new slipcover, a different distributor, or a changed bonus-disc lineup can make a catalog entry—and the buyer who wants it—different from another version of the same film.

Inventory what is actually included
Open the case and make a component list while you can still check it. Note missing inserts, replacement cases, swapped artwork, loose hubs, and whether a digital code is present. Do not describe a code as unused unless you have verified that it is valid and unused; many codes expire or may already have been redeemed.
Photograph the physical evidence
Take photographs of the front, spine, back, disc labels, disc surfaces, inserts, and every corner of the packaging. Photograph the barcode or catalog number clearly enough for a buyer to compare it with the listing. Add close-ups of scratches, dents, cracks, torn seams, crushed corners, sticker residue, and scuffed steelbook surfaces. Photos should show the copy being sold, not stock artwork.
2. Establish a defensible price
Use completed transactions, not the highest live listing
Active listings show what sellers hope to receive. They do not show what buyers accepted. Look for completed transactions for the same cataloged release, matching region and edition, and then separate sealed, opened-complete, incomplete, and damaged examples. If a marketplace offers a sold or completed-transactions filter, use it; the exact interface and availability can vary by account and country.
No universal “rarity premium” or reliable market statistic applies to every Blu-ray. Until the exact title, edition, and condition are identified, a fair value for an unspecified copy remains unresolved.
Adjust for the factors buyers pay for
- Sealed versus opened: Factory sealing can matter for collectible editions, but a sealed copy is not automatically valuable if demand is weak.
- Completeness: Include all discs, booklets, cards, certificates, slipcases, and original artwork that the comparable sales included.
- Disc condition: Surface marks, residue, cracks around the center hub, or a disc that has not been tested can reduce confidence.
- Packaging condition: A crushed slipcover, dented steelbook, broken case hinge, or missing O-ring may matter more to a collector than a minor case scuff.
- Edition accuracy: Match the exact release rather than using the price of a different pressing, region, or retailer exclusive.
Choose a price from your net proceeds
Set a minimum amount you are willing to keep, then work backward from the platform fee and your real packing and postage cost. A price that looks attractive before deductions can be unprofitable after fees, shipping materials, a refund, or a discount.

3. Compare marketplace fees and buyer friction
Compare the fee base—not just the headline percentage. Shipping treatment, fixed order charges, buyer-facing fees, catalog requirements, and the audience for your particular edition can change the best venue.
| Marketplace and scope | Seller charge | Other calculation details | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay.com, Movies & TV, US example | 15.3% final value fee on the total sale amount up to $7,500; 2.35% on the portion above $7,500 | $0.30 per order when the order is $10 or less; $0.40 when it is above $10. The fee base can include item price, buyer-paid shipping, handling, and tax. | Most sellers receive up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month, although store subscriptions and other circumstances can change the schedule. |
| Discogs, US-dollar example | 9% of item price plus shipping | USD minimum $0.10 and maximum $150 | Listing is free. The item must match an associated catalog listing and be graded appropriately under the marketplace’s policy. |
| Mercari US, listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025 | 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping | The buyer separately pays a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on item price plus buyer-paid shipping. | The extra buyer charge affects the total shown at checkout, so compare the buyer’s final price rather than your seller fee alone. |
These are US examples: the eBay figure is for eBay.com, Mercari’s figure is US-specific, and sellers elsewhere need the schedule for their own marketplace and location. Confirm the current fee page for your account and category before publishing a price.
When eBay is a practical fit
eBay can expose an unusual edition to a broad audience, but its percentage is calculated on a broad total and includes a fixed per-order charge. Buyer-paid shipping and tax can therefore increase the fee base. A seller with many listings may also benefit from the stated monthly zero-insertion allowance, subject to the account’s actual terms.
When Discogs is a practical fit
Discogs can suit cataloged physical media when the exact Blu-ray release has an appropriate catalog entry. The 9% charge applies to both the item and shipping, and the minimum and maximum matter for very low- or high-value orders. Do not create a Discogs listing against a merely similar release; first confirm that the catalog record describes the copy you own and that your grading follows the marketplace’s standard.
When Mercari is a practical fit
Mercari’s seller deduction is 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping for qualifying new or updated US listings. The buyer also sees a 3.6% Buyer Protection charge on that same base. That charge is not an additional deduction from your payout, but it can make your total checkout price less competitive, so inspect the current checkout display when setting the item price.

4. Grade the Blu-ray honestly
A condition label helps a marketplace categorize the item; it cannot replace a precise description. Use the platform’s preset that most closely matches the copy, then document the details a buyer cannot infer from the label.
eBay condition meanings for Movies & TV
| eBay label | Meaning in the category guidance | What your description should add |
|---|---|---|
| Brand new | Never opened or removed from factory sealing where applicable. | State whether the seal is intact and photograph tears, punctures, price stickers, or broken shrink wrap. |
| Like new | Appears just removed from shrink wrap, with no visible wear and all facets flawless and intact. | Confirm that the case, artwork, discs, and included pieces meet that standard; disclose even small marks that make the label inaccurate. |
| Very good | Used item in very good condition, with attention to packaging, included materials, disc behavior, and visible wear. | List disc marks, case wear, missing pieces, replacement parts, and whether playback was tested. |
Choose the category-specific preset accurately rather than using “rare” as a substitute for condition. “Rare” describes scarcity or demand; it does not mean the disc or packaging is physically flawless.
Describe disc and case condition separately
- Say whether the copy is sealed or opened.
- Describe visible disc marks as light surface lines, scratches, residue, or other observable defects; do not imply that a mark is harmless unless you have evidence.
- State whether playback was tested. If it was not tested, say so plainly. Never claim a test you did not perform.
- Report cracked cases, broken hubs, loose discs, missing trays, yellowing, or replacement cases.
- For steelbooks, identify dents, spine splits, paint chips, scratches, and the condition of the inner tray.
- Describe slipcover, box, booklet, art-card, poster, certificate, and bonus-disc condition individually.
- Explain whether the original artwork and barcode are present.
- State the digital-code status only when known.
Discogs adds a catalog and grading requirement
Discogs seller policy expects the item to match an associated catalog listing and to be graded under the Discogs Grading Standard. Check the exact catalog record before listing and ensure the grade you select is consistent with that standard. A generic “excellent” statement is not a substitute for the marketplace’s required grading system.
Use a repeatable description format
A compact, buyer-readable format reduces misunderstandings:
- Identity: title, label, year, region, edition, catalog number, and barcode.
- Contents: discs and every included insert or accessory.
- Seal and media: sealed/opened, visible marks, and tested/not tested status.
- Packaging: case, slipcover, box, steelbook, artwork, and specific flaws.
- Code note: present, redeemed, expired, or unknown, only where verified.
- Photo reference: identify which image shows each notable flaw.
5. Calculate what you will actually keep
Use this basic model before accepting an offer:
Net proceeds = item price + buyer-paid shipping − marketplace fees − postage − packing materials − any discount or refund you absorb.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep buyer-paid shipping separate from the postage estimate. A platform may include shipping in its fee base even though the shipping amount is not profit.
Illustrative eBay calculation
Suppose a US eBay.com order has a $100 item price and $8 buyer-paid shipping, with no tax in this simplified illustration. The fee base is $108. At 15.3%, the percentage fee is $16.52; the order charge is $0.40 because the order exceeds $10. If postage costs $8 and materials cost $1.50, the illustrative net is $108 − $16.52 − $0.40 − $8 − $1.50 = $81.58. Actual tax treatment, account terms, discounts, refunds, and category rules can change the result.
Illustrative Discogs calculation
For a $100 item with $8 shipping, the 9% Discogs fee applies to $108, producing a $9.72 fee before postage and materials. The stated $0.10 minimum and $150 maximum do not affect this example. Your net after $8 postage and $1.50 materials would be $88.78, before any other adjustment.
Illustrative Mercari calculation
For a $100 item with $8 buyer-paid shipping, the seller fee for a qualifying US listing is 10% of $108, or $10.80. The buyer separately sees a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on $108, or $3.89, rounded according to the checkout system. That buyer charge is not subtracted from the seller fee calculation, but it raises the buyer’s total and may require a lower item price to remain competitive. Subtract your actual postage and materials from the seller proceeds.

6. Pack a Blu-ray so the case cannot move
Choose a correctly sized container
Use a disc-sized protective mailer or a small box for a single Blu-ray, with cushioning appropriate to the space inside. A container should be slightly larger than the item so protective material can surround it without forcing the case against the walls. Box sets, rigid collector boxes, slipcovers, and steelbooks need extra corner and surface protection.
Pack in this order
- Inspect that the disc is secured in its hub and that loose inserts cannot rub against it.
- Place the case in a protective sleeve or wrap it so scuffs and moisture exposure are reduced.
- Add bubble wrap, foam, paper, or another cushioning material around every side.
- Fill voids until the case cannot slide or rattle when the package is gently shaken.
- Use a strong closure and reinforce seams where the parcel could split.
- For steelbooks and premium editions, keep hard edges and adhesive away from painted surfaces and protect all corners.
eBay’s packing guidance recommends a container slightly larger than the item and cushioning on every side; its suggested materials include bubble wrap, packing peanuts, foam, or paper. The goal is not a particular material but immobilization and protection from compression, drops, and corner impacts.
Weigh and measure the finished parcel
Determine postage from the fully packed weight and dimensions, not from the unwrapped Blu-ray. Rates vary by destination, package size, service speed, and date. This guidance does not establish that any particular Blu-ray qualifies for USPS Media Mail or another special rate, so check the carrier’s current eligibility rules and price using the actual parcel.
Use the promised service and document handoff
Offer only a shipping method and handling time you can meet. Upload the correct tracking number, retain the acceptance receipt, and verify that the carrier scan belongs to the parcel and destination. eBay states that an integrated carrier tracking record with an acceptance scan helps protect a seller in an item-not-received claim.
Consider insurance and signature requirements
The seller remains responsible for safe delivery under eBay’s guidance. Its seller advice says to consider insurance, particularly for high-value goods. Before offering insurance or signature service, check the carrier’s current coverage, exclusions, declared-value limits, and destination rules. Signature confirmation can add cost and inconvenience, but may be sensible when the value makes a loss consequential.
7. A listing-to-dispatch workflow
- Identify: record title, edition, region, catalog number, barcode, and included components.
- Inspect: examine discs, hubs, case, slipcover, box, steelbook, inserts, and code status.
- Photograph: take complete-copy images plus close-ups of every flaw and identifier.
- Research: compare completed sales for the exact release and condition; do not anchor to the highest active ask.
- Calculate: model the marketplace fee, shipping fee base, postage, materials, and your minimum net.
- Select the venue: confirm category, catalog compatibility, seller fee schedule, shipping settings, and buyer-facing charges.
- Write: select the accurate condition preset and use a fact-by-fact description.
- Set shipping: weigh the packed parcel, choose a service you can meet, and state handling time accurately.
- Dispatch: immobilize the case, seal the parcel, obtain the acceptance scan, upload tracking, and keep the receipt.
8. Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing from the highest active listing | The listing may never have sold or may describe a different edition. | Match completed transactions to the exact release, region, completeness, and condition. |
| Calling an ordinary pressing “rare” | Collectors cannot verify the scarcity claim and may treat the listing as unreliable. | State the edition, catalog number, and evidence visible on the copy; let comparable sales establish demand. |
| Using “like new” for a visibly worn copy | The preset’s meaning includes no visible wear and flawless, intact facets. | Select the accurate category condition and itemize the wear. |
| Claiming playback was tested | A buyer may rely on the claim, and an untested disc can fail at playback. | Say “not tested” when that is the truth; if tested, describe what was tested without overstating the result. |
| Omitting a missing booklet or slipcover | Completeness affects collectible value and can make the item unlike the comparable sale. | List every missing or substituted component and photograph the package as shipped. |
| Using a generic catalog entry on Discogs | The seller policy expects the item to match an associated catalog listing. | Confirm the exact edition and grading standard before listing. |
| Calculating profit from postage alone | Some platforms charge a percentage on shipping, and packing materials also cost money. | Model the full fee base, postage, materials, and any buyer-facing charge that affects competitiveness. |
| Leaving empty space in the mailer | The case can move, crack, or suffer corner damage in transit. | Fill all voids and shake-test the sealed package gently before dispatch. |
| Uploading the wrong tracking number | An unrelated or missing acceptance scan weakens delivery evidence. | Check the number against the label, upload it promptly, and retain the carrier receipt. |
9. Decide where to list
Choose the platform that gives your exact edition the best balance of audience, catalog accuracy, total fees, buyer checkout price, and shipping control.
- Choose eBay when: the release needs broad exposure, you can absorb the percentage-plus-order fee, and the category’s condition and shipping settings fit your listing.
- Choose Discogs when: the exact release has a matching catalog record and you can apply its grading standard precisely.
- Choose Mercari when: the US fee structure and checkout total remain competitive after the 10% seller fee, buyer-paid shipping, and 3.6% buyer protection charge.
Do not cross-list identical inventory without a stock-control plan. If it sells on one marketplace, remove or end the other listing immediately and keep the photos and catalog identifiers organized so you do not ship the wrong pressing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
