Then set clear policies, ship safely, and use customer feedback and your own sales records to improve. These steps help you create a sound process; they do not guarantee sales or profit.
1. Define what you sell and what each piece is
Start with a focused range you can describe and fulfill reliably. Decide whether your inventory is handmade, your original designs, vintage, curated, or sourced. Keep a record for every item so your listing and customer service stay consistent.

- Materials and metal content, including any known fineness or hallmark
- Gemstone identity and any known treatment; distinguish natural, synthetic, and imitation stones accurately
- Measurements, weight, condition, and notable construction details
- What is included, such as a chain, presentation box, or certificate
If you sell on Etsy, check that each item fits its rules for items made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller. Its Seller Policy explains those standards. Platform eligibility does not replace your responsibility to follow laws that apply to your business.
2. Choose where to sell
A marketplace and an independent online store solve different problems. A marketplace can put listings in front of shoppers already browsing there, while a separate storefront gives you more control over your brand and shopping experience. Maintaining your own store also means taking responsibility for attracting visitors and managing the storefront. BigCommerce describes these benefits from a platform-vendor perspective, not as independent evidence that one channel produces better sales.

You can use both if you can keep inventory, pricing, and service consistent across channels. Start with the channel you can maintain well rather than opening more storefronts than you can manage.
3. Price each piece from its real costs
Calculate the cost of materials and labor, then include packaging, shipping you cover, payment and marketplace fees, expected costs from returns or remakes, and the margin your business needs. Check the result against the item’s materials, craftsmanship, and comparable products; do not assume that a popular-looking price will cover your costs.

Etsy’s fee page lists a $0.20 USD listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount, including shipping and gift wrapping if charged. Payment-processing fees vary by seller country. Additional charges may apply for services such as ads, currency conversion, regulatory operating fees, deposits, or shipping labels. Etsy also lists Offsite Ads fees of 15% for sellers below $10,000 in Etsy sales in the prior 365 days and 12% at or above that threshold, capped at $100 per order; applicability depends on Etsy’s rules and the seller’s circumstances. These are Etsy fees, not general online-selling rates, and can change. Check the current Etsy fees and payments policy before setting prices.
4. Photograph jewelry to show detail and scale
Use even, clear lighting and a neutral background so shoppers can see the piece rather than distracting reflections or clutter. Take a full view and close-ups of details that matter, such as a clasp, setting, hallmark, texture, or visible wear. Include a scale reference or a photo showing how the item sits when worn, and state exact measurements in the listing.

- Use a steady camera and check focus at the detail level a shopper needs to judge workmanship.
- A display stand can help show shape, and a macro lens can help with close-ups, but neither is essential.

5. Write a clear, searchable listing
Put the item’s defining facts where a shopper can find them quickly. Use a plain title and relevant tags that match the actual piece; add accurate attributes, materials, dimensions, condition, and processing time. Explain what the buyer receives and disclose any uncertainty rather than presenting an assumption as fact.

6. Make claims and shop policies clear before checkout
Explain shipping costs and timing, returns and exchanges, payment, custom-order terms, and care instructions where relevant. Make policies easy to find before purchase, and ensure they match what you can actually do. Return and other legal requirements vary by location and transaction, so check the rules that apply to your business rather than copying a generic policy.

Describe precious metals, diamonds, gemstones, and pearls accurately. The US Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides address claims about these products. FTC online-selling guidance also calls for disclosure when a gemstone is synthetic or imitation and when pearls are cultured or imitation. See the FTC guidance on prompt delivery in internet sales. This is US guidance; sellers elsewhere should consult the rules in their own jurisdictions.
7. Pack orders securely and ship when promised
Choose packaging that protects the piece from movement, impact, moisture, and damage in transit. Secure small items inside an inner container, cushion it within an outer shipping box, and use a double-box approach for expensive jewelry when appropriate. BigCommerce recommends double boxing for high-value pieces, but packaging should suit the item and the carrier’s requirements.
- State a processing time and delivery estimate you can reasonably meet.
- Inspect the item, secure it in suitable protective packaging, and confirm the shipping address.
- Use a shipping service appropriate to the item’s value and destination; share tracking when available.
- Keep the order and shipping records, and communicate promptly if a delay occurs.
In the United States, FTC prompt-delivery guidance says a seller needs a reasonable basis for a promised shipping time. If no time is stated, the rule summary describes a reasonable basis to ship within 30 days. If the seller cannot ship as promised, the guidance requires notice and compliance with applicable cancellation and refund requirements. Do not treat this US rule as a worldwide shipping standard.

8. Improve the shop using completed orders
Review questions shoppers ask, returns and their reasons, customer feedback, actual fulfillment times, and net margin after costs and fees. Use those records to decide whether a description needs clarification, a photo should be replaced, a policy needs adjusting, or a product should be repriced or removed.
There is no reliable universal benchmark here for jewelry-store sales, conversion rates, or seller earnings. Judge changes against your own shop’s records, and allow enough time and orders to distinguish a useful pattern from an isolated result.
