To self-host document editing in Nextcloud, run a Collabora Online service beside your Nextcloud server, publish it at a separate HTTPS hostname, and connect that public URL in Administration settings → Office. The simplest routes are Nextcloud All-in-One (AIO) or the built-in CODE server. A standalone Docker or package installation gives you more isolation and a better path for heavier workloads, but it also makes DNS, TLS, reverse-proxy, and update administration your responsibility.

What Nextcloud Office actually consists of
Nextcloud Office is the Nextcloud integration app, not the document-editing engine itself. Collabora Online performs the browser-based editing. Nextcloud’s Server Administration Manual describes the arrangement directly: Nextcloud Office is built on Collabora Online, which requires a dedicated service running next to the Nextcloud web-server stack.

A self-hosted installation therefore has at least three operational pieces:
- Nextcloud: stores files, authenticates users, and loads the Office integration.
- Collabora Online or CODE: opens and edits office documents in the browser.
- A public HTTPS edge: normally a reverse proxy that terminates TLS and forwards ordinary HTTP requests and WebSocket connections to Collabora.
The browser must be able to reach both the Nextcloud hostname and the Collabora hostname. Editing is not an entirely server-to-server transaction: the browser downloads editor resources and opens a WebSocket through the public Collabora URL.

Choose a deployment route
Nextcloud documents four practical routes. Select one before configuring DNS or a proxy, because the amount of administration differs substantially.

A dedicated Collabora service is the direction Nextcloud recommends when performance matters. There are no authoritative universal CPU, RAM, storage, or concurrency figures in the cited documentation, so size the host from your own document volume, simultaneous editors, and observed resource use rather than from an invented minimum.

Prepare these items before starting the container or package installation:
- A host capable of running Docker, or a Linux distribution supported by the current Collabora package matrix.
- A dedicated subdomain or second domain, such as
office.example.com, with DNS pointing to the reverse-proxy host. - A valid certificate whose name covers the Collabora hostname. The Nextcloud hostname also needs valid TLS.
- A reverse proxy in front of Collabora. Apache and Nginx are supported; the proxy must handle both normal HTTP forwarding and WebSocket upgrades.
- Network reachability from users’ browsers to the public Nextcloud and Collabora hostnames. A service that is reachable only on a private container network will not work for browser editing.
- The real public URL of your Nextcloud instance, for the CODE allow-list or alias setting.
Use the examples below as patterns only. Replace every example hostname with your actual fully qualified domain name and use the environment-variable syntax documented for the CODE release you install.
Plan DNS and HTTPS first
Create the office hostname
Create an A or AAAA record for office.example.com that resolves to the host running your reverse proxy. If the proxy and Docker host are different machines, point DNS to the proxy, not directly to the container’s private address. Confirm that clients on the networks where editing will occur resolve the same public name.
Issue certificates for both services
Obtain a publicly trusted certificate for the Nextcloud hostname and for the Collabora hostname. The browser will reject mixed or invalid certificate names even when the container itself is healthy. Keep certificate renewal at the proxy, where the TLS connection terminates, and ensure the proxy continues forwarding to the local Collabora listener after renewal.

Decide where TLS terminates
The common arrangement is HTTPS from the browser to the proxy and plain HTTP on a loopback address from the proxy to Collabora. If you choose end-to-end TLS instead, configure the upstream scheme and certificate validation consistently. Do not expose an unprotected Collabora port directly to the internet when the proxy is intended to be the public edge.
Install Collabora CODE with Docker
The official Docker example publishes CODE only on the local host, leaving the reverse proxy as the public entry point:

collabora/codeChange cloud.example.com to the exact public Nextcloud URL, including the scheme and port convention required by the installed CODE release. The current image documentation may use a different environment-variable spelling or additional options; follow that release’s syntax rather than copying an old command unchanged.
Why bind to 127.0.0.1?
-p 127.0.0.1:9980:9980 makes the container listener available only on the Docker host’s loopback interface. Apache or Nginx can reach it locally, while unsolicited internet traffic cannot bypass the proxy. If your proxy runs on another host, use a private, firewalled interface instead and restrict access to the proxy’s address.

Keep the container restartable
--restart always asks Docker to start the service again after a host reboot or a Docker daemon restart. Record the exact image tag, environment values, published port, and proxy configuration in your operations notes. The untagged command above follows the official example, but pinning a tested image tag is safer for production because it gives you a known rollback point.
Configure the reverse proxy
Nextcloud’s examples recommend a reverse proxy in front of CODE whether you use Docker or native packages. With Apache, the example enables the proxy, proxy_http, proxy_wstunnel, and ssl modules. Nginx is also supported, provided its proxy configuration preserves the same request paths and WebSocket upgrade headers.

Forward the required paths
Your proxy must forward these Collabora endpoints to the local service:
/browserfor the editor’s browser assets./hosting/discoveryso Nextcloud can discover supported document formats and actions./hosting/capabilitiesfor service capabilities./cool, including the document sessions and the main WebSocket endpoint under/cool/.../ws./loolwhen using the compatibility forwarding described in the manual.
If administrative monitoring is enabled, forward its WebSocket endpoint as well. Preserve the original host and scheme headers expected by the upstream, and do not apply a blanket rewrite that changes the path structure. A proxy that serves /browser but drops /cool WebSocket upgrades can appear partly functional while documents remain stuck on “Loading.”
WebSocket details
WebSocket support is not optional for normal editing sessions. The proxy must accept the client’s upgrade request and pass the upgraded connection to Collabora. Check that your configuration allows long-lived connections and does not impose an aggressive idle timeout. On Apache, this is why proxy_wstunnel is enabled in the official example; on Nginx, use the equivalent HTTP/1.1 upgrade handling.
Avoid redirect loops
When TLS terminates at the proxy, pass the external HTTPS scheme to the upstream or configure the application to trust the proxy. Otherwise Collabora or Nextcloud may repeatedly redirect an already secure request to HTTPS, producing a loop that looks like a certificate or login failure.
Connect Collabora to Nextcloud
- Sign in to Nextcloud with an administrator account.
- Open Apps and select the Office & text category.
- Install Nextcloud Office.
- Open Administration settings → Office.
- Enter the public Collabora URL, for example
https://office.example.com. Use the URL users’ browsers can resolve; do not enterhttp://127.0.0.1:9980or a Docker service name. - Save the setting and create or open a small ODT or DOCX file to verify that the editor launches.
The integration needs the public endpoint because the browser, Nextcloud, and Collabora all participate in the session. Entering an internal container address can make a server-side check look plausible while leaving users unable to load the editor.

curl -i https://office.example.com/hosting/discoveryYou should receive an HTTP response from Collabora rather than a DNS error, certificate warning, proxy-generated 404, or redirect loop. The endpoint test does not prove that editing works, but it separates basic reachability from browser-session problems.
Check the browser network panel
Open a document, inspect the browser’s Network tools, and look for successful requests to /browser, /hosting/discovery, and /cool. A failed WebSocket handshake, a 301/302 chain between HTTP and HTTPS, or a request sent to the wrong hostname points to proxy or URL configuration rather than to the document file.
Test more than one format
Use a small ODT and a small DOCX file. This confirms that the integration can open common formats without introducing a large-file or conversion variable during initial troubleshooting. Once both open, test saving, closing, and reopening from another browser session.

The documented replacement sequence is intentionally simple: retrieve the newer image, identify the running container, stop and remove the old container, then start a replacement with the same domain and restart settings.
- Pull the desired image, preferably a version you have selected and recorded.
- List containers and note the current CODE container name and options.
- Stop the existing container.
- Remove the stopped container. Removing the container does not remove the image or your proxy configuration.
- Start the replacement with the same published port, allowed Nextcloud domain, restart policy, and capability options.
- Request
/hosting/discovery, open a test document, and inspect the proxy and container logs.
Keep rollback notes containing the previous image tag and the exact docker run arguments. Review Nextcloud and Collabora security advisories, and schedule updates during a period when active editing sessions can be closed. The cited documentation does not promise a fixed release cadence, so choose a monitoring and maintenance interval appropriate to your risk tolerance.
Troubleshoot failures in a fixed order

Use this sequence rather than changing several components at once: first test the public discovery endpoint, then DNS and certificate names, then proxy logs and WebSocket upgrades, then the CODE domain allow-list, and finally the URL saved in Administration settings → Office. This preserves the evidence needed to identify the failing layer.
Security and operational boundaries
- Keep the Collabora listener private behind the reverse proxy whenever possible.
- Use HTTPS for both Nextcloud and Collabora and renew certificates before they expire.
- Restrict the CODE allow-list to the exact Nextcloud hostname or hostnames you operate; do not use an unnecessarily broad wildcard.
- Protect the proxy and Docker host with normal firewall rules, operating-system updates, and administrator authentication.
- Monitor proxy and container logs for repeated failed handshakes, unexpected hostnames, and restart loops.
- Document the image tag, environment variables, proxy routes, certificate locations, and rollback command so another administrator can recover the service.
Document editing adds a public application endpoint to your file platform. Treat Collabora, the reverse proxy, and Nextcloud as one security boundary: a patch or certificate problem in any one of them can stop editing even when the other two are healthy.
Support and licensing considerations
Nextcloud’s portal states that Nextcloud Office requires a Collabora Online server to run. It also states that Nextcloud GmbH support for Collabora installations requires an Enterprise Subscription with the Collabora option. That is a support-policy statement, not proof that every community CODE deployment is unavailable. Confirm the current terms for your edition, organization size, and desired support arrangement before relying on vendor assistance.
A community deployment can therefore be technically usable while still falling outside a particular commercial support package. Keep that distinction clear when selecting between AIO, built-in CODE, Docker, and native packages.
Which route should you use?
Choose AIO when maintenance simplicity dominates
AIO is the most integrated choice when you want Nextcloud Office included and prefer one documented deployment and maintenance path. It reduces the number of independent components you must wire together, although you give up some of the separation available with an independently managed Collabora service.
Choose built-in CODE for a small installation
Built-in CODE is the lowest-effort starting point for personal use or a small team. Nextcloud describes it as working out of the box in most scenarios, while warning that it is slower and lacks the scalability features of a standalone server.

Docker is the clearest fit when you already operate containers, need Collabora isolated from the Nextcloud web container, or expect to manage the office service on its own update cycle. In exchange, you own the public hostname, TLS, proxy routes, WebSocket behavior, allowed-domain configuration, and replacement procedure.
Choose packages for native Linux operations
Native packages make sense when your organization standardizes on system services, distribution patching, and existing Linux monitoring. Check the current supported distribution list before committing, because package support changes over time.
