How to Self-Host Calibre-Web Automated With a Book Downloader

The dependable way to self-host Calibre-Web Automated (CWA) with a downloader is to run it in Docker Compose and keep three persistent locations separate: application configuration, a disposable book-ingest folder, and the Calibre library that contains metadata.db. Publish the container’s port 8083, point CWA at the in-container library path, and use the companion downloader only for books you are legally entitled to obtain.

This layout works on a Linux server, desktop, or NAS. The details that determine whether it stays reliable are volume ownership, database placement, network-share settings, backups, and a test import before you add a large collection.

What CWA and the downloader do

Calibre-Web Automated is intended as an all-in-one self-hosted digital-library application. Its project README describes a combination of Calibre-Web’s lightweight browser interface, Calibre library features, and additional automation. Calibre-Web itself provides browser browsing and reading, original-file downloads, separate user accounts and shelves, OPDS access, and optional Kobo synchronization.

The companion Shelfmark/Calibre-Web Automated Book Downloader supplies an interface for searching and requesting downloads. It is not a copyright license or a source of permission. You remain responsible for obtaining files from sources and services for which you have rights.

In a normal installation, the downloader or another source puts an ebook into CWA’s ingest directory. CWA analyzes it, converts it when configured to do so, imports the result into the Calibre library, updates the database, and removes the processed file from ingest. The library is then available through the web UI and, if configured, OPDS or Kobo synchronization.

Plan the three storage locations first

Use three different host directories. The CWA README warns against collapsing these bindings into one directory because each location has a different lifecycle and permission requirement.

Purpose Container path What belongs there Retention
Application configuration /config Settings, logs, and CWA’s application data Persistent; include it in backups
Book ingest /cwa-book-ingest New, legally obtained ebook files waiting for analysis Disposable; processed files are removed
Calibre library /calibre-library metadata.db, book files, covers, and Calibre’s directory structure Persistent; back up the complete directory

For example, a Linux host could use /srv/cwa/config, /srv/cwa/ingest, and /srv/calibre-library. The host names are not special; choose absolute paths on the disk or share you intend to maintain. Do not put the ingest folder inside the library unless you have a deliberate, tested reason to do so.

Why metadata.db matters

metadata.db is the SQLite database that identifies a Calibre library. CWA can discover an existing database in the mounted library or create a new one when none exists. If more than one database is present, the configuration documentation says CWA automatically mounts the largest library. That behavior can surprise you after a migration, so keep only the intended database in the path or verify the selected library in the admin settings.

Keep the database and the book directories together for the simplest deployment. CWA supports a split-library arrangement, but separating metadata from book files adds storage and path decisions that are unnecessary for a first installation.

Build the Docker Compose deployment

Prerequisites

  • A host or NAS that can run Docker Engine and Docker Compose.
  • Three host directories with enough space for the library and temporary ingest activity.
  • A host user and group whose numeric IDs can own the mounted files.
  • A plan for local-only access or a TLS-protected reverse proxy if the service will be reachable remotely.

Create the directories and permissions

Create the config, ingest, and library directories on the host. The account represented by the container’s PUID and PGID must be able to read and write them. On a local Linux disk, set ownership to those IDs before the first start. On a NAS share, apply the equivalent ownership or ACL rules in the NAS interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not make the ingest folder read-only: CWA needs to remove files after successful processing. The library must also be writable if you expect imports, conversions, cover updates, or metadata edits.

Map the volumes and port

Add the following volume and port mappings to the current CWA Compose service. Keep the image reference and other environment entries from the project’s current template rather than copying an outdated image tag from an article.

volumes:
  - /srv/cwa/config:/config
  - /srv/cwa/ingest:/cwa-book-ingest
  - /srv/calibre-library:/calibre-library
ports:
  - "8083:8083"

The left side is the host path; the right side is the path CWA sees. In the web interface, use /calibre-library, not /srv/calibre-library. A common reason for an apparently empty library is entering the host path into a field that accepts only container paths.

Set identity and time zone values

Set PUID, PGID, and the template’s time-zone variable to values appropriate for the host. Numeric IDs such as 1000 are only examples; determine the IDs of the account that should own the files. Correct IDs prevent imports that appear to work but leave unreadable books or databases behind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start and inspect the service

  1. Save the Compose file with the three bindings, port 8083, identity values, and time zone.
  2. From the directory containing that file, run docker compose up -d.
  3. Check container status and logs if it exits or repeatedly restarts. Permission errors, a malformed Compose file, and an unavailable network share are the first things to investigate.
  4. Open the service at http://your-ip:8083 from a machine that can reach the host.

Complete the first-run configuration

Choose the library path

When CWA asks for the Calibre library, select /calibre-library. If you are using the conventional LinuxServer Calibre-Web image instead of CWA, its equivalent mounts are /config and /books, and its initial library path is /books. Do not mix the path conventions between containers.

Secure the administrator account

The LinuxServer image documentation lists admin / admin123 as its default login. Change that password immediately on a real deployment. CWA installations should likewise replace any initial or temporary administrator credentials before exposing the service beyond a trusted LAN.

Verify database discovery

Confirm that the displayed title count, authors, covers, and formats match the intended library. If CWA reports no books, check that the mounted directory actually contains metadata.db and the associated book folders, then confirm the container path. If several libraries were copied into the mount, check which one was selected before importing anything else.

Use the downloader and ingest folder safely

The ingest workflow is deliberately simple, but each stage is worth checking during the first import.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Obtain a file lawfully. Use a store, library service, public-domain archive, or other source that grants you the necessary rights. The CWA project explicitly says it does not approve or support piracy of copyrighted materials and is not responsible for users’ behavior.
  2. Place the file in the host ingest directory. With the example layout, copy it to /srv/cwa/ingest. Inside the container this is /cwa-book-ingest.
  3. Let CWA analyze it. The application identifies metadata and available formats. Depending on your settings, it can convert the ebook before import.
  4. Confirm the result. Check the title, author, cover, formats, and file size in the web UI. Open the book in the browser or download it to verify that the imported file is usable.
  5. Check the source folder. After successful processing, CWA removes the file from ingest. That is expected behavior, not evidence of data loss, provided the item now exists in the library.

Keep an original copy elsewhere until you have verified a new conversion or import. The ingest directory is not an archive, and a failed or partially processed item should be recovered from its lawful source or a separate backup.

When an import does not appear

  • Confirm the host file was copied into the directory actually bound to /cwa-book-ingest.
  • Inspect logs for a parser, conversion, or permission error.
  • Verify that the container user can read the source and write the library and database.
  • On a network share, confirm polling mode is enabled as described below; event-based watching may not see the new file.
  • Check the library after processing rather than relying only on the ingest folder, because successful files are deleted there.

Run CWA on a NAS or network share

Local disks use SQLite write-ahead logging (WAL) and inotify file events by default. NFS and SMB mounts can handle locking and event semantics differently. CWA documents NETWORK_SHARE_MODE=true for these deployments.

When enabled, network-share mode disables SQLite WAL for metadata.db and app.db, skips recursive ownership changes that can fail on network filesystems, and replaces inotify watching with polling. Polling consumes more I/O and may introduce a short detection delay, but it avoids the lock and event failures that make a share-based library appear unreliable.

Choose what stays local

If possible, keep /config and the active SQLite databases on local storage while placing large book files on the share. If the library database itself is on NFS or SMB, enable network-share mode and test imports, metadata edits, and restarts before moving your complete collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Align ownership

For the LinuxServer image or another container that uses PUID and PGID, align the share’s ownership and ACLs with those IDs. A mount can be visible from the host and still be unwritable inside the container. Test by creating a file as the container user, importing one ebook, and confirming that CWA can update both the database and the library directory.

Protect remote access and plan backups

Use TLS through a reverse proxy

CWA’s configuration guidance says a remotely self-hosted instance must use TLS/SSL and should sit behind a reverse proxy such as Nginx or Apache rather than being exposed directly. Keep port 8083 restricted to the proxy or trusted LAN, terminate HTTPS at the proxy, and use strong administrator credentials. A VPN is another way to limit who can reach the service, but it does not replace account security.

Back up both persistent areas

Back up the complete Calibre library, including metadata.db, book files, and covers, as well as the CWA application configuration. A library-only backup can restore books but lose settings, users, or automation state; a config-only backup cannot restore the content database. Schedule backups when no bulk import or metadata operation is running, retain more than one historical copy, and periodically verify that a database and a sample book can be restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not spend backup capacity treating the ingest directory as permanent storage. Its contents are transient by design. Keep lawful originals or a separate content backup if you need to reprocess a file.

Choose how readers will access the library

Browser interface

The web UI is the simplest option for browsing, reading supported formats, downloading originals, managing shelves, and administering users. Separate accounts are useful when several people share the server and should not see the same shelves or permissions.

OPDS clients

Calibre-Web exposes an OPDS catalog. An OPDS-capable reading app can browse the server and download books without requiring every reader to use the full browser interface. Treat the OPDS endpoint as another authenticated access surface and keep it behind the same TLS and proxy controls.

Kobo synchronization

Optional Kobo synchronization is useful when the household already uses Kobo readers and wants the library to appear in that ecosystem. It adds device-specific setup and account considerations, so test with one account and one device before enabling it for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the main implementation choices

Decision Option A Option B What changes
Storage medium Local disk NFS/SMB share Local storage keeps WAL and event watching; a share needs NETWORK_SHARE_MODE=true, polling, and careful locking and permissions.
Library layout One combined Calibre library Split library A combined library is simpler to back up and troubleshoot; split placement can solve storage constraints but increases path and database complexity.
Application CWA Stock Calibre-Web CWA adds automated ingest and conversion; stock Calibre-Web is the more minimal choice when you do not need those automations.
Reading access Browser or OPDS Kobo synchronization Browser and OPDS are device-agnostic; Kobo sync is convenient for compatible readers but requires ecosystem-specific configuration.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The container exits immediately

Validate the Compose syntax, inspect container logs, and check that every host directory exists. Then verify that the configured PUID and PGID can traverse and write the mounts. A remote share that is not mounted when Docker starts can produce the same symptom as a bad path.

The UI opens but the library is empty

Look for metadata.db inside the container’s configured path, not merely on the host. Confirm that the database and book directories are together, unless you intentionally configured split storage. If multiple databases exist, identify the largest library that CWA selected and remove ambiguity before continuing.

Files remain in ingest

A remaining file generally means analysis, conversion, or import did not complete. Read the logs, check file readability and free space, and confirm that the destination library is writable. Do not repeatedly copy the same file until you know whether a partial record was created.

New files on a NAS are detected late or not at all

Enable NETWORK_SHARE_MODE=true, restart the container, and allow for polling delay. Verify that the share is mounted consistently and that the container can write its database without WAL-related locking errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Books import but cannot be opened

Check the imported format and conversion result in the item details, then test the original file outside the server. A successful metadata import does not guarantee that a malformed source ebook can be rendered; restore the original and retry with a known-good format when necessary.

Operational checklist

  • Keep /config, /cwa-book-ingest, and /calibre-library as separate persistent bindings.
  • Use the container library path, not the host path, in CWA settings.
  • Set PUID, PGID, and time zone values that match the host or share permissions.
  • Run one test import before adding a large batch.
  • Expect successfully processed ingest files to disappear from the drop folder.
  • Enable network-share mode for NFS or SMB and test polling behavior.
  • Put remote access behind TLS and a reverse proxy.
  • Back up both the full Calibre library and CWA configuration.
  • Review administrator, user, OPDS, and device permissions after upgrades.

The Bottom Line

A stable CWA installation comes down to disciplined storage separation, correct container paths and ownership, and a tested ingest-to-library workflow. Keep the database with its book files where practical, enable network-share mode on NFS or SMB, secure remote access with TLS, and back up both the library and application configuration.
