Start with your location and the operator’s licence
Identify the country and, where relevant, state or territory where you live and where the betting service is licensed. Then find the regulator’s official self-exclusion page. A company may offer different products under different licences, so do not assume a scheme covers every app or gambling product with the same brand.

The examples below are not universal instructions or a complete list of jurisdictions. For Great Britain, the UK Gambling Commission identifies GAMSTOP ONLINE as the route for a single request covering online gambling websites and apps operated by businesses licensed there (UK Gambling Commission guidance). Australia uses BetStop for licensed online and phone wagering (BetStop). In the United States, state regulators administer their own programs; Pennsylvania and New Jersey illustrate how those routes can differ.
How to register
- Open the regulator’s or official scheme’s website. Confirm that the program covers online sports betting and the relevant licensed operators.
- Read the scope, duration and removal rules before enrolling. Check whether the program also covers casino games, phone wagering or other products, and whether it reaches multiple operators.
- Complete the official identity and enrollment steps. Use accurate details and provide documents or identifiers only through the official service. Requirements vary by program.
- Save the confirmation and follow any remaining instructions. Check the scheme’s guidance about existing accounts, balances, marketing and when exclusion takes effect.
- Use the official complaint route if a covered provider appears to breach the rules. For example, BetStop directs people to complain about a wagering provider they believe has breached self-exclusion requirements.

Australia: what BetStop enrollment means
BetStop is a free Australian Government initiative. While registered, a person is excluded from new accounts and betting with covered providers, and those providers must not send direct marketing. Providers may check customers against the register. If you are already registered with a state or territory scheme, you must register with BetStop separately; the national register does not absorb those registrations.

Before selecting a period, note the limits on changing it. The ACMA says you may extend your exclusion but cannot reduce its duration. You cannot request removal during the first three months; an application requires a statutory declaration confirming counselling or advice from a qualified counsellor, psychologist or doctor. These conditions are specific to BetStop, not a general rule for other programs.
An Australian Government FAQ published in 2026 reported more than 60,000 Australians had registered with BetStop and over 37,000 active registrations. Those are point-in-time figures for the Australian program, not global totals (Gambling Reforms 2026 – Frequently Asked Questions).

Make the block part of a broader support plan
Self-exclusion is one protection step, not a substitute for support. The UK Gambling Commission recommends seeking support alongside it. If gambling is causing harm, consider telling someone you trust, contacting a qualified counsellor or using a local gambling-help service.
