Find the originating element with a normal Selenium locator, then use browser JavaScript and getComputedStyle(element, "::before") or getComputedStyle(element, "::after") to inspect its computed style.
Why Selenium cannot find a pseudo-element
A CSS pseudo-element such as ::before or ::after represents generated content associated with an originating element. It is not a separate element in the DOM that Selenium can return as a WebElement. The W3C Selectors specification describes pseudo-elements as bound to an originating element rather than existing independently in the tree (Selectors Level 4).
A CSS selector such as button.submit::before describes a pseudo-element in CSS, but it is not a locator for an ordinary element node. Use a locator for the real element—here, button.submit—and inspect the pseudo-element through that element.
Read a pseudo-element’s computed style in Selenium
Python: inspect ::before
Find the originating element, then pass it to JavaScript as an argument. This example returns the computed content value:

Inspect ::after or another property
Change the pseudo-element argument to ::after to inspect that pseudo-element. To read a different computed property, access it on the returned style object:

Interpret the value you get back
getComputedStyle returns browser-computed CSS values, not necessarily the literal text as authored in a stylesheet. The content result may be a quoted string, none, a counter-related value, or another CSS representation. Do not assume it is plain visible text or compare it blindly with a source-code fragment.
The CSS Pseudo-Elements specification explains that ::before and ::after generate boxes when their computed content is not none (CSS Pseudo-Elements Module Level 4). If the value is none, the pseudo-element may not generate a box. Check that Selenium matched the intended origin and that you are inspecting the intended pseudo-element and property.

Selenium’s getCssValue reads a computed style property of the referenced element, not automatically the style of that element’s pseudo-element (Get CSS Value). For a pseudo-element property, use JavaScript’s getComputedStyle with the pseudo-element as its second argument.
Inspection is not interaction
Reading generated content or style does not give Selenium a separate target to click, type into, or otherwise interact with. If a test needs to operate a control, locate the real DOM control that owns the pseudo-element. If the behavior or state matters to the test, prefer an actual DOM element or application state exposed through markup rather than treating decorative generated content as an interactive node.

Troubleshoot common failures
NoSuchElementExceptionwhen the selector includes::before: replace the pseudo-element locator with a selector for its originating element, such as.status, then inspect its pseudo-element with JavaScript.- The returned content is empty,
none, or unexpected: verify the matched element and the::beforeversus::afterargument. Inspectcontentand any relevant computed properties; the pseudo-element may not generate a box if its computed content isnone. getCssValue("content")does not return the pseudo-element’s content: that call reads the referenced element’s computed style. ExecutegetComputedStyle(arguments[0], "::before").content(or use::after) in the browser instead.- The test needs to click generated content: locate and interact with the actual control that owns it. A pseudo-element is not a separate Selenium element.
- The result differs from the authored stylesheet: you are reading a browser-interpreted computed value. Account for computed-value serialization and browser behavior in assertions rather than assuming the authored CSS text will be returned unchanged.
