How to See Which Services Are Running Inside svchost.exe in Windows 11 and 10

Run tasklist /svc in Command Prompt or PowerShell to see which services are associated with each running process, including each svchost.exe process. To connect a service to a host in Task Manager, compare their process IDs (PIDs): the PID is the link between the service entry and its process.

List services hosted by each svchost.exe process

Microsoft documents tasklist for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its /svc option displays service information for each process.

  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
  2. Run tasklist /svc.
  3. Find the svchost.exe rows. Note the PID and the service names listed for each row.

A row may list one or more services, so do not assume that every svchost.exe instance hosts exactly one service. The command lists currently running processes on the local computer by default.

Filter the results for a known service

If you already know a service’s name, use the /fi filter to narrow the listing. For example, this command filters for the service name Winmgmt:

tasklist /svc /fi "Services eq Winmgmt"

Replace Winmgmt with the service’s actual service name. This is a service-name filter; it is not a search for the more descriptive display name that Windows may show in a graphical list.

Match a service to its process in Task Manager

Task Manager provides a visual way to make the same connection. Find the service in the Services pane, note its PID, then locate the process with that PID in Details. If the PID column is missing, add it in the Details view’s column settings.

Choose the inspection method that fits the question

Method Best for What it shows
tasklist /svc Quickly listing service-to-process associations across running processes Process names, PIDs, and associated service names
Task Manager Visually matching a particular service and process Service and process entries that can be connected by PID
Resource Monitor or Process Explorer Readers who prefer another graphical inspection route or want to inspect processes visually Alternate process-inspection views; details depend on the tool

Resource Monitor and Microsoft’s Sysinternals Process Explorer are additional options mentioned in a Microsoft Q&A response. The command and PID steps are the direct choices when you need to identify which services are associated with a specific host process.

If you are investigating high CPU or memory use

First identify the exact process and PID, then check which services are associated with that host. A service appearing in the list establishes an association, but does not by itself prove that the service caused a performance problem. Microsoft’s WMI troubleshooting example uses PID matching to identify the relevant process; its diagnostic steps concern that specific WMI scenario, not every service host.

Do not stop or disable a service just because it appears under svchost.exe. Identify the service and investigate the specific problem before changing its state. Seeing several service-host entries alone is not proof of malware or a fault.
