To check WhatsApp’s sent and received message counters, open Network usage: on Android, go to WhatsApp → ⋮ → Settings → Storage and data → Network usage; on iPhone, go to WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Network usage. Read Messages sent and Messages received. Treat these as usage statistics for the current installation since its last reset—not as a guaranteed lifetime total. What the WhatsApp message counter measures
The Network usage screen reports overall message activity recorded by WhatsApp’s usage statistics. It is not a per-chat report, a date-filtered history, or a count of everything ever sent from your account. If you previously reset the statistics, changed phones, reinstalled WhatsApp, or use another linked phone, the displayed totals may not cover all your activity. Xataka describes the usage counters and their related categories.
This counter is also different from storage: it does not tell you how much space a conversation uses, how many media files it contains, or how many messages are currently visible in a chat. The screen may list other usage figures separately, such as data sent and received, media or status data, calls, and roaming-related usage; the categories shown can vary with the app interface.
Check the count on Android
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap the ⋮ menu in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then Storage and data.
- Tap Network usage.
- Read the numbers beside Messages sent and Messages received.
The same screen contains the reset control and other usage statistics. Do not tap reset until you have recorded the figures you want to keep.

Check the count on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom navigation.
- Tap Storage and data, then Network usage.
- Read Messages sent and Messages received.
Labels and menu placement can differ slightly by WhatsApp release, operating-system version, or language. If you do not see Network usage, look under Storage and data for Data usage or a translated equivalent. Older interfaces may use different wording, as noted by Infobae.
Measure messages from a chosen date onward
WhatsApp does not provide a dependable built-in report for an arbitrary past date range. To measure a future interval, note the current totals, reset the statistics at the start, and check them at the end. For example, reset on Monday morning and check the following Monday to measure activity recorded over that week. The result is not a retroactive count for a week that has already passed. Canal 26 outlines using a reset to begin a new measurement period.

- Open Network usage and write down or photograph the existing sent and received totals.
- Tap Reset statistics at the bottom of the screen and note the date and time.
- Return to the same screen when your chosen period ends and record the new totals.
Count messages in one chat
The Network usage counter is overall activity; it does not give a straightforward sent-and-received breakdown for one person or group. WhatsApp’s Manage storage area is for reviewing space used by chats and media, not a universal text-message count. Current third-party coverage says an older per-chat message-count display is no longer generally available in the same way; interfaces can change. AirDroid discusses the per-chat limitation.
Export the conversation for an external count
- Open the individual or group chat you want to count.
- On Android, open ⋮ → More → Export chat where available. On iPhone, tap the contact or group name at the top and look for Export Chat.
- Choose Without media for a smaller text-focused export, unless you specifically need attachments.
- Save the exported text file somewhere private, then count its message entries with a spreadsheet or an offline text-analysis tool.
Export options, file formats, and limits vary by platform and app version, so a very large conversation may not export completely through the standard interface. An export can include sensitive conversation content: keep the file private and avoid uploading it to an analyzer unless you have assessed its privacy practices. User reports discuss the export route and its practical limits, but do not establish one universal export capacity: export discussion and a report about a large chat.

A count from an exported file may not match WhatsApp’s Network usage total exactly: the export and the usage counter can represent different message types or system entries.
Why the number may not match what you expect
- The statistics were reset: the counter starts a new period after reset, so it no longer represents earlier activity.
- You changed phones or reinstalled WhatsApp: do not assume a new installation or restored backup recreates the old usage counter.
- You use linked phones: totals may differ between devices; treat each displayed figure as device/current-installation usage rather than a definitive account ledger.
- You are looking in the wrong area: Manage storage shows space use. Look under Storage and data for the Network/Data usage statistics screen.
- The menu is missing or named differently: check for Network usage, Data usage, or a translated equivalent, update WhatsApp in the device’s official app store, and close and reopen the app. Beta, business, tablet, desktop, and linked-device interfaces may differ.
Record the existing figures before troubleshooting. Do not uninstall WhatsApp just to try to recover a missing counter; reinstalling is not a reliable way to restore old statistics, and you should not proceed without a verified backup and an understanding of the risks.

What the message total does not tell you
The sent and received figures are message-activity counters, not counts of characters or words, media files, notifications, or messages preserved in a backup. WhatsApp’s available descriptions do not clearly establish how deleted or restored messages affect this usage counter, so it should not be used as an exact ledger of chat history.
