You can usually see a deleted WhatsApp message again only by restoring a backup made before it was deleted. WhatsApp says it cannot recover deleted messages for you and does not store chat history on its servers. Before restoring, check the backup date: it may bring back messages captured in that snapshot, but not newer ones.
First identify what “deleted” means
The next step depends on what happened. A message you deleted for yourself, a message another person deleted for everyone, a cleared chat and an expired disappearing message are not the same case.

- You chose Delete for me: Your copy was removed, but the other participants’ copies are not affected. A recipient may still be able to share the message with you.
- Someone chose Delete for everyone: WhatsApp replaces the message with a deletion notice. The recipient may have read it or retained media before deletion, but WhatsApp does not provide a way to retrieve the deleted content.
- You cleared a chat: A backup made before the chat was cleared may contain its earlier messages.
- A disappearing-message timer expired: The message follows separate timer and backup rules; restoring is not a dependable way to retrieve an expired message.
WhatsApp’s Help Center explains that Delete for me removes a copy from your phone and says it is unable to recover deleted messages for you. Read WhatsApp’s guidance on deleting messages.

A backup is a snapshot, not a tool for retrieving one message selectively. It must have been made before the message was deleted and must include that message. Restoring it can also leave out messages sent or received after the backup was made.

Before starting, check the date and account
- On iPhone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and check the last backup’s time and size.
- On Android, confirm the Google Account associated with the WhatsApp backup and that you can access that account.
- Compare the backup time with when the message was deleted. If the backup is later, it will not contain the earlier message; if it is earlier, it may contain it.
- Consider which newer messages could be absent from the restored snapshot. WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance says a new backup overwrites the previous one: one backup is kept per WhatsApp number in the associated Google Account, and iCloud likewise keeps one backup per account.
Restore on iPhone
- Check the backup timestamp at WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- If the backup predates the deletion and you accept the possibility of losing newer history, uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Verify the same phone number and Apple ID used for the backup.
- When prompted during setup, tap Restore Chat History.
WhatsApp says messages sent or received after the latest backup cannot be restored from it. See its iPhone chat-history restore instructions.
Restore on Android
- Confirm that the relevant Google Account is available on the phone and is the one associated with the WhatsApp backup.
- Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Set up WhatsApp with the same phone number and follow the restore prompt during initial setup.
The restore option appears during setup, rather than as an always-available restore control in WhatsApp settings. WhatsApp’s Android backup and restore troubleshooting also explains that the newer backup replaces the older one.

If someone deleted the message for everyone
Once deletion for everyone has synced to your devices, WhatsApp does not offer a recovery feature for the message. The sender or another recipient may still know what it said or have a copy of media saved outside WhatsApp, so asking them is the practical option—not a guaranteed recovery method. WhatsApp notes that recipients may have seen a message before deletion and that media on an iPhone may remain saved in Photos. Its deletion guidance describes these limits.
If you cleared the chat
A cleared chat may return if the latest backup was made before you cleared it. Restoring brings back the snapshot rather than just the missing conversation, so messages that arrived after that backup will not be in the restored history. WhatsApp describes this in its guidance on clearing chats.

If disappearing messages were involved
WhatsApp offers disappearing-message durations of 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. A message can be included in a backup made before it disappears, but WhatsApp says it is deleted when a user restores from that backup. That behavior is not a promise that an expired message can be recovered. See WhatsApp’s explanation of disappearing messages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to assume
WhatsApp’s official guidance does not establish that third-party recovery apps can restore deleted messages, and it does not assess their effectiveness or privacy practices. Do not treat them as a proven alternative to an eligible backup. WhatsApp’s explanation is direct: chat history is not stored on its servers, so it cannot restore chats for you. Its backup and restore troubleshooting page covers that limitation.
