How to Securely Erase an SSD Before Selling or Recycling It

The safest way to erase an SSD is to identify its exact model and interface, back up anything you need, then run the manufacturer-documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, or cryptographic-erase procedure for that drive. Deleting files, formatting a partition, or repeatedly overwriting visible capacity does not prove that every flash cell was sanitized.

What “securely erase” means for an SSD

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication 800-88 Revision 2 is the current final edition of the media-sanitization guidance. NIST published it on September 26, 2025, superseding Revision 1. NIST defines media sanitization as “a process that renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” That definition matters: sanitization is judged against the sensitivity of the information and the resources an attacker might use, not against a universal promise that recovery is impossible in every situation.

Revision 2 emphasizes a documented sanitization program, standards-aligned techniques, validation, and trust in the device or tool implementation. For techniques other than cryptographic erase, NIST points organizations toward IEEE 2883, NSA specifications, or an approved internal standard. A home user can apply the same principle: use a procedure the SSD maker documents for the exact model, retain evidence that it completed, and escalate to an approved disposal service when the drive is failed or the data requires stronger assurance.

No general-purpose instruction can guarantee “100% unrecoverable” results for every SSD, controller, firmware version, adapter, or forensic threat. The procedure below is designed to prevent the common mistake of treating a normal computer erase as equivalent to drive-level sanitization.

Why deleting, formatting, and ordinary overwriting are not enough

Deleting files changes filesystem records

When you delete files, the operating system normally removes references to them and marks their space as available. The underlying NAND contents may remain until the controller later reuses those blocks. A buyer who receives the drive could potentially recover information with suitable software or hardware.

Formatting rebuilds a volume, not necessarily every flash cell

A quick format creates a new filesystem structure. It is useful when preparing a blank volume for normal use, but it is not evidence that old data has been removed from all physical media. A full format may write across the addressable range, yet it still does not establish that every location previously containing data was reached.

Wear leveling breaks the simple overwrite assumption

SSDs distribute writes across NAND cells to extend service life. This wear-leveling behavior means a host write to one logical block address can be redirected to a different physical location. A NIST-hosted presentation from the Revision 1 era specifically warned that ordinary overwriting can be unreliable on SSDs for this reason. Treat that presentation as technical background; select today’s procedure using NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2 and the current instructions for your drive.

A host-side overwrite can therefore leave remapped, over-provisioned, or otherwise inaccessible locations untouched. It may also add unnecessary wear. Do not claim that a generic wiping application verified every physical cell unless the drive maker and your applicable standard explicitly support that conclusion.

Prepare the SSD before starting

Sanitization is destructive. Once the operation starts, assume the data cannot be recovered. Complete these checks before launching any utility.

  • Back up required files. Copy documents, photographs, encryption-recovery keys, browser exports, password-manager vaults, and any business records to storage you control. Samsung’s Secure Erase documentation explicitly warns that all data on the SSD will be removed.
  • Record the exact identity. In the operating system or firmware setup, note the manufacturer, full model number, capacity, and firmware version. If the SSD is encrypted or managed by an organization, record the asset identifier and required chain-of-custody information.
  • Identify the interface. Determine whether the device is SATA or NVMe and whether it is installed internally, connected through a USB enclosure, or attached through another adapter. A tool that works for an internal NVMe device may not expose the same commands through an enclosure.
  • Connect stable power. Use AC power on a laptop and avoid hubs, loose cables, sleep timers, or a situation in which the computer can shut down during the operation.
  • Remove competing storage when practical. Disconnect other drives or verify the target by model and serial number. Selecting the wrong disk is an irreversible error.
  • Check policy and sensitivity. If the SSD held regulated, confidential, or exceptionally sensitive data, follow your organization’s approved sanitization and disposal process instead of improvising with a consumer utility.

Choose a method by drive support and final disposition

Do not rank generic “wipe software” by marketing claims. Compare the available route against four questions: does it support this exact SSD, what type of operation does it perform, how is completion validated, and what will happen to the drive afterward?

Route When it fits Important limitation What to verify
Manufacturer Secure Erase or Sanitize The drive maker documents the function for your model and interface, and the SSD will be reused or transferred. Compatibility can be restricted by brand, firmware, interface, adapter, or drive state. Exact model support, prerequisites, target selection, completion message, and any vendor validation guidance.
Drive-supported cryptographic erase The manufacturer and your policy approve the drive’s cryptographic-erase implementation. It is not a universal substitute for every sensitivity level or every SSD configuration. That the operation is supported on this model, that it completed, and that your policy accepts the resulting assurance.
Host-side overwrite Only where a current, approved standard explicitly allows it for the particular media and risk level. Wear leveling can leave physical locations outside the host address space untouched; repeated passes do not automatically solve that problem. The standard’s requirements and evidence that the implementation meets them. Do not treat a progress bar as proof of cell-by-cell coverage.
Qualified destruction or disposal The SSD is failed, will not be reused, or contains information requiring stronger assurance than a supported logical operation provides. Destruction prevents resale or reuse and may require documented custody and certificates. Your organization’s approved vendor, method, records, and environmental requirements.

NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2 does not provide one consumer command that works for all brands. Use the manufacturer’s current page for the exact SSD, then apply the validation and record-keeping requirements of the applicable standard or organizational policy.

General procedure for a supported SSD

  1. Back up and sign out. Confirm that the backup opens, export anything tied to the old computer, and sign out of accounts or remove the machine from device-management portals as required. These account steps protect your identity; they do not sanitize the SSD by themselves.
  2. Find the maker’s procedure. Search the support documentation for the full model number and the terms “Secure Erase,” “Sanitize,” or “cryptographic erase.” Read the compatibility notes before installing software.
  3. Update firmware if the maker requires it. Samsung, for example, recommends updating SSD firmware before running Secure Erase. Do not interrupt a firmware update or substitute a firmware package intended for another model.
  4. Install or boot the supported tool. Some vendors provide a desktop utility; others require a bootable environment. Follow the documented operating-system, driver, and privilege requirements. If the procedure requires boot media, use a USB flash drive dedicated to that purpose and create it exactly as instructed.
  5. Confirm the target twice. Match the utility’s model, capacity, serial number, and connection type with the physical SSD. If more than one disk is present, disconnect non-target drives or shut them down where the instructions permit.
  6. Resolve the required drive state. A tool may require the SSD to be connected directly, not mounted as a system volume, or placed in a particular state before the command is enabled. Do not force a disabled option or bypass a warning; find the vendor’s documented recovery step.
  7. Start the destructive operation. Accept the data-loss warning only after checking the target. Keep power and the connection stable, and do not close the utility or reboot unless the instructions explicitly request it.
  8. Capture completion evidence. Save the tool’s completion message, date, model and serial number, and any generated log. A successful message shows what the implementation reported; it is not a license to claim more assurance than the standard or vendor documentation supports.
  9. Prepare the next state. For a sale or transfer, leave the SSD unallocated or reinstall an operating system only after sanitization, using the computer maker’s recovery or transfer procedure. For recycling, follow the recycler’s packaging and handoff instructions. Do not create a new account or restore your backup onto the erased drive unless you intend to keep it.

Samsung Secure Erase as a concrete example

Samsung’s documentation illustrates why exact-drive support matters. Samsung describes Secure Erase as removing data stored on the SSD and warns users to update firmware first. Its instructions cover three routes: running Secure Erase through the Magician utility in Windows, creating DOS boot media, and using documented Linux steps.

Windows through Magician

Install the current Samsung Magician release supported for the SSD, verify that the program identifies the correct Samsung drive, and follow its Secure Erase workflow. The utility may require the target not to be the active system volume. Read the on-screen state and compatibility warnings rather than assuming every menu item applies to every model.

DOS boot media

Samsung documents creating a DOS boot disk on a USB flash drive and starting the computer from that media. This is an optional route for supported Samsung drives, not a universal requirement for SSD sanitization. Set the boot target and select the SSD by its identifying information before confirming the erase.

Linux instructions

Samsung also publishes Linux commands and device-state requirements for its supported workflow. Use the commands exactly as Samsung lists them for the model and release. Do not copy a command from a different SSD brand, and do not run a destructive command until the device path, model, and required state have been checked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility boundary

Samsung states that Magician is designed for Samsung-branded storage products and that Secure Erase and related functions are not supported for non-Samsung SSDs. Interface and drive-state limitations also apply. A Samsung utility is therefore an example of a vendor-specific procedure, not a general-purpose eraser.

Adapters, enclosures, and interface traps

USB enclosures may hide sanitize commands

An NVMe or SATA SSD connected through a USB enclosure may appear as a generic USB storage device. The enclosure’s bridge can block the drive-level command or report incomplete information. If the manufacturer requires a direct internal connection, move the SSD to that connection before attempting the operation.

Do not infer support from detection alone

A utility seeing the capacity does not mean it can sanitize the drive. Detection, health monitoring, firmware updates, and Secure Erase can each have different compatibility requirements. Confirm that the specific destructive function is enabled for the exact model.

Protect against the wrong-disk error

Capacity numbers are not unique. Use the serial number and model string, label the physical drive, and disconnect other storage where possible. If the identifiers do not match, stop.

How to handle completion, verification, and uncertainty

Validation should match the method and the assurance level you need. Record what the vendor tool reported, preserve logs, and document the operator, date, device identity, and disposition. If your organization follows IEEE 2883, an NSA specification, or an internal standard, use that standard’s required validation rather than inventing a filesystem test.

Creating a new partition, seeing an empty volume, or checking that files cannot be opened is not a universal proof of sanitization. Those checks examine the host-visible address space and filesystem, while the concern with SSDs includes controller-managed physical locations. If the vendor tool reports failure, the drive is intermittently disconnecting, or the required procedure is unavailable, stop transferring the device and use the approved destruction or disposal route.

What to do when the erase fails

The utility cannot see the SSD

  • Verify the cable, slot, power, and BIOS or UEFI detection.
  • Remove the USB enclosure or adapter if the manufacturer requires a direct connection.
  • Confirm that the software version supports the model and interface.
  • Do not substitute another brand’s utility merely because it detects the drive.

Secure Erase is disabled

  • Read the tool’s state warning; the SSD may be mounted, locked, or the active boot device.
  • Boot the vendor’s supported environment if the operating-system installation prevents the operation.
  • Apply the maker’s documented firmware or power-cycle prerequisite.
  • If the option remains unavailable, treat the method as unsupported rather than forcing it.

The process stops or reports an error

  • Keep the drive isolated and do not sell or recycle it as if it were erased.
  • Record the exact error, firmware version, connection path, and time.
  • Consult the current manufacturer procedure for that model.
  • For sensitive data or a failing drive, transfer the SSD through your approved destruction or specialist disposal process.

Decide between selling, returning, and recycling

Selling or giving the SSD to another person

Use a manufacturer-supported sanitization method, retain completion evidence, and leave the drive ready for its next owner. If the SSD was part of a managed computer, remove organizational enrollment and account access separately. Sanitization protects the old data; it does not transfer software licenses or ownership of cloud accounts.

Returning an SSD under warranty

Follow the seller or manufacturer’s return instructions and any required data-destruction statement. If the drive is failing and cannot complete its supported erase, disclose that condition and use the approved return or destruction route instead of sending it back with unaddressed data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recycling or disposing of a failed drive

When reuse is not planned, a qualified recycler or destruction provider can apply the method required by your policy and local environmental rules. Keep chain-of-custody records when the data warrants them. Do not improvise physical damage as a substitute for a documented process; broken connectors or a drilled case do not by themselves demonstrate that all flash media was rendered inaccessible.

Final checklist

  • Backups were tested and the erase is authorized.
  • Manufacturer, model, serial number, interface, and firmware were recorded.
  • The exact-drive vendor procedure was checked for compatibility.
  • The SSD was connected in the required way and the correct target was selected.
  • Firmware, boot-media, mounted-volume, and power prerequisites were followed.
  • The destructive operation completed without an error.
  • Completion evidence and disposition records were saved.
  • A failed or unsupported erase was routed to an approved disposal method, not passed to a buyer.

The practical bottom line

For most personal SSD transfers, the defensible sequence is: back up, identify the exact drive, run its documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, or cryptographic-erase function, record completion, and only then sell, return, or recycle it. NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2, published September 26, 2025, provides the current framework, but it does not turn one generic overwrite command into a universal guarantee. When the drive is unsupported, failed, or unusually sensitive, stop experimenting and use the disposal process approved for that level of risk.
