What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with safety, then secure both the phone and the accounts connected to it. Install current operating-system updates, replace reused passwords with strong unique ones, turn on two-factor authentication, and review apps, permissions, location sharing, connected devices and account recovery options. On an iPhone with iOS 16 or later, Safety Check can guide much of that review. On Android, Google Play Protect checks apps and can warn about or remove some harmful software.
Those checks are useful but not conclusive. A battery that drains quickly, an unfamiliar app or a warm phone is not proof of surveillance, and a clean scan cannot tell you whether somebody still has access to an email, Apple Account, Google Account or shared cloud service. If monitoring might be connected to abuse or stalking, plan the changes with an advocate using a safer device before uninstalling anything. Removing stalkerware or changing access can alert the person who installed it.

What spyware and stalkerware can expose
“Spyware” is a broad term for software or an account compromise that collects information without the user’s informed consent. “Stalkerware” usually refers to covert monitoring used by an intimate partner, family member or other person with physical or account access to a phone. Capabilities vary by app, operating-system version and the permissions or privileges it obtained.
Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance says stalkerware can expose location, calls, text messages, email and photos, and in some cases can enable microphone or camera access. That list is not universal: one app may collect location only, while another may depend on accessibility access, device-administrator privileges, a rooted or jailbroken phone, or a compromised account.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
A phone can therefore be “clean” while an intruder still reads cloud-synchronized messages, sees location shared through an account, or signs in to email from another device. Device security and account security have to be checked together.
Put personal safety before technical cleanup
If the suspected monitoring is part of domestic abuse, stalking or coercive control, do not begin by confronting the person or abruptly deleting software. The FTC warns that uninstalling stalkerware may notify an abuser or otherwise reveal that access has changed. The safest next step depends on your circumstances, including whether the person can see your phone, knows your passcode, has access to your accounts, or might retaliate.
Use a safer device to seek help
- Contact a domestic-violence or digital-safety advocate from a phone or computer the suspected person cannot access. A different phone may be safest in some situations, but it is not a universal requirement.
- Explain what you have observed, who may have access, and whether changing settings could create danger.
- Ask how to preserve evidence, document incidents and decide whether professional or law-enforcement assistance is appropriate.
- Do not store safety plans, advocate messages or evidence in an account the suspected person can open.
Consider evidence before removing anything
Deleting an app, resetting a phone or changing a password can destroy information that an advocate or investigator might need. Photographing a screen with another device, writing down dates and preserving relevant messages may be safer than interacting with the suspected software. Get case-specific advice before making changes if evidence could matter.
Secure the phone and its main accounts
Perform these changes when it is safe and practical. If a suspected person controls the phone physically, knows the existing passcode or receives notifications about account changes, make a safety plan first.

- Install current system updates. Update iOS, Android or the manufacturer’s software through the normal Settings update screen. Updates repair known security flaws, although they do not remove every form of monitoring.
- Replace the device passcode. Use a long, unique passcode or password that nobody else knows. Avoid birthdays, repeated digits and a code used on another service. Keep biometrics enabled only if they fit your circumstances; in some situations, a passcode may provide more control over when the phone can be unlocked.
- Protect the primary account. Set a strong, unique password for the Apple Account or Google Account associated with the phone. Secure important email accounts as well, because email access can be used to reset other passwords.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Use an authenticator, security key or another method you control when available. Check that the recovery email addresses, phone numbers and trusted devices belong to you.
- Inspect signed-in devices and sessions. Remove devices, browsers or sessions you do not recognize, but consider whether doing so could alert someone or destroy evidence. Review account activity from the account’s official security page rather than from a link in an unexpected message.
- Review sharing and recovery settings. Check location sharing, family groups, shared calendars, photo libraries, cloud storage, messaging services and password managers. A person with legitimate-looking shared access may still be able to track you.
A secure phone passcode cannot protect an account that another person can already open. Conversely, changing an account password will not fix a hidden app that retains local access. Treat both layers as separate checks.
Use Safety Check on an iPhone
Safety Check is available on iPhones running iOS 16 or later. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Apple’s feature provides two routes:
| Safety Check option | What it is for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency Reset | Quickly stops sharing and reviews account and device access when you need an urgent change. | Because it changes access quickly, consider personal safety and evidence before using it. |
| Manage Sharing & Access | Steps through people and apps that can see information, connected Apple Account devices, verification phone numbers, app privacy permissions, and account or device credentials. | It does not cover every non-Apple account, social network, service or device signed in to another Apple Account. |
Work through the review
- Open Safety Check and authenticate with the iPhone passcode, Face ID or Touch ID when prompted.
- Review people and apps that receive location, photos, calendars, contacts or other data. Stop sharing only when doing so is safe.
- Inspect devices connected to your Apple Account. Remove an unknown device after considering whether the action could alert its user.
- Verify trusted phone numbers and recovery details. Replace anything controlled by another person.
- Review app privacy permissions, especially location, microphone, camera, contacts, photos and Bluetooth access. An app should have only the access its function requires.
- Change the device passcode and Apple Account credentials if the suspected person may know them, then confirm two-factor authentication and trusted devices again.
Safety Check is a guided access and sharing review, not a forensic spyware detector. It can show that information is being shared or that a device is attached to your account; it cannot guarantee that every covert monitoring method has been found. Separately inspect non-Apple accounts and services, including email, social media, cloud storage and messaging apps.

Use Google Play Protect on Android
Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and also checks apps installed from other sources. Google says it may warn about, deactivate or remove harmful apps, and may reset some permissions. Confirm that it is enabled in the Play Store’s Play Protect area; exact labels and paths can vary by Android version and manufacturer.

Review Play Protect results
- Open the Play Store and go to the Play Protect screen.
- Run or review the available scan and read any warning instead of dismissing it automatically.
- Follow Google’s removal or deactivation instructions only after considering personal safety and evidence.
- Return to Android Settings and review app permissions, accessibility access, device-administrator apps, VPNs, installed profiles and other special access categories. The names and locations of these menus differ among manufacturers.
Play Protect is one protective layer, not proof that a phone is clean. It focuses on harmful app behavior and cannot determine whether another person knows your Google password, controls a shared account or installed monitoring that evades its checks.
Review apps and special access without guessing
Open the complete installed-app list, not just the home screen. Look at each app’s publisher, install date, permissions, battery and data use, and whether you recognize why it is present. Check these areas where your Android or iPhone exposes them:
- Location, microphone, camera, contacts, photos and files
- Accessibility services and notification access
- Device-administrator or management privileges
- VPN configurations and installed profiles
- Unknown-source installation permission
- Bluetooth, local-network and background-refresh access
Do not delete an app solely because its name looks strange. Legitimate system components can have technical names, and monitoring software may be disguised. The FTC’s 2021 enforcement action against SpyFone described a monitoring app presented as “System Service,” showing why a suspicious label alone is not a reliable diagnosis. If an app is unfamiliar, capture its details and ask a qualified professional before removing it when safety or evidence is a concern.
Do not treat symptoms as a verdict
Unexpected battery drain, heat, data use, crashes, pop-ups, a changed home screen or an unfamiliar app can have ordinary explanations such as an update, a failing battery, poor signal or a legitimate service. These signs justify a careful review, not a conclusion that somebody is watching you. Likewise, the absence of symptoms does not prove that monitoring is absent.

Choose the right response for the threat level
| Situation | Most useful response | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| General concern about an outdated or shared phone | Update the system, set a unique passcode, secure accounts with two-factor authentication, and review apps, sharing and signed-in devices. | That one scan or a new passcode checks every account and service. |
| Possible intimate-partner monitoring or stalking | Use a safer device to contact an advocate; make a safety and evidence plan before changing access or deleting software. | That immediate removal is always the safest action. |
| Apple’s high-confidence threat notification | Verify the notification in the device’s official settings or Apple’s support guidance and follow the recommended response. | That an email or phone call requesting a password or code is an Apple threat notification. |
| Credible risk of highly sophisticated targeted spyware | Consider Apple Lockdown Mode and specialist guidance, including Apple’s official threat-notification instructions. | That Lockdown Mode is necessary for every suspected tracking incident. |
Understand Apple threat notifications and Lockdown Mode
Apple describes threat notifications as high-confidence alerts that an individual may have been targeted by mercenary spyware. They are intended for an uncommon, highly sophisticated threat model rather than routine concerns about a partner, a lost password or an unfamiliar app.
A genuine Apple threat notification appears on the device. Apple says it will not ask you by email or phone to click a link, open a file, install an app or profile, or provide an Apple Account password or verification code. Treat a notification seriously, access Apple’s official instructions directly, and avoid responding to anyone who asks for credentials while claiming to be support.
Lockdown Mode adds restrictions intended for people who have good reason to believe they may be individually targeted, even if they have not received a notification. It can reduce functionality and change how some websites, messages, calls and attachments work. Use it when the threat model justifies those trade-offs, ideally with expert advice; it is not a routine first step for every tracking concern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen a factory reset or new phone makes sense
A factory reset can remove some locally installed monitoring, but it is not a guarantee. It may fail to address a shared Apple Account or Google Account, cloud-based tracking, a compromised email account, a management profile, or access restored from a backup. It can also erase evidence and alert the person who was monitoring.
Best Value
A new phone similarly helps only if it is set up securely. Reusing a known passcode, restoring a compromised backup, signing in to a shared account, or transferring an unsafe profile can bring the problem back. Before a reset or replacement, ask an advocate or qualified technician how to preserve evidence and create clean accounts and recovery methods. If you proceed, update the device before restoring data, use a new passcode, secure the primary account with a unique password and two-factor authentication, and reinstall apps deliberately rather than restoring everything automatically.
After the first review: keep access from returning
- Install operating-system and app updates promptly from official settings or stores.
- Recheck account device lists and recovery methods after changing passwords.
- Audit location sharing and family or household groups periodically.
- Grant microphone, camera, location, contacts and photo access only when needed; revoke it when the reason ends.
- Keep the phone’s passcode private and do not leave an unlocked device unattended.
- Be cautious with profiles, VPNs, accessibility services and apps installed outside the official store.
- Use a safer device for sensitive planning if the phone may be monitored.
These habits reduce ordinary account and app risks, but no checklist can promise detection of every targeted or covert technique. Escalate credible high-risk concerns to a digital-safety professional, domestic-violence advocate or other trusted specialist rather than relying on a single scan.
What the evidence says about stalkerware
There is no reliable universal prevalence figure or scanner-accuracy percentage to apply to every phone. Detection depends on the operating system, app privileges, account access, device condition and the skill of the person installing or concealing the monitoring.
In the FTC’s September 2021 action against SpyFone, Samuel Levine, then Acting Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, called it “a brazen brand name for a surveillance business that helped stalkers steal private information.” The case illustrates the privacy harm of covert monitoring; it does not establish that every unusual phone symptom is stalkerware or that a particular scanner catches all such software.
Quick Recap
A concise decision checklist
- Could changing access create danger? If yes or unsure, pause and contact an advocate from a safer device.
- Could another person know your passcode or account password? Change credentials and recovery methods through a safety-planned process.
- Is the phone updated? Install current updates when safe.
- Are apps, permissions, profiles and special access understood? Review them without deleting unfamiliar items solely on appearance.
- Are other devices or services still connected? Inspect Apple, Google, email, social, cloud and messaging accounts separately.
- Is there a genuine high-risk targeted-attack indicator? Follow official Apple notification guidance and consider Lockdown Mode only for that threat model.
- Would a reset or replacement remove evidence or restore compromised data? Obtain specialist advice before proceeding.
