What to do before you claim any free Fortnite item
Use this order whenever a post, message, video, or in-game notice promises a free skin, V-Bucks, or cosmetic item:

- Never buy V-Bucks from an outside seller, exchange money for a promised gift through a third party, or share or sell the account.

Urgency is another practical warning sign: countdowns, limited claim windows, and messages saying your account will be deleted if you do not log in immediately are pressure tactics, not proof of an offer. Treat a link in an unsolicited direct message, email, or comment as untrusted even when the message appears to come from a friend; that friend’s account may have been compromised.
Strengthen the Epic Games account
Use a unique password
Your Epic password should not be reused on email, social media, console accounts, or any other site. A long, unique passphrase stored in a reputable password manager is easier to keep unique than a short password that you modify repeatedly. If the same password has been used elsewhere, change it before attempting a redemption. Do not disclose it to a friend, trader, moderator, or supposed support agent.
Enable 2FA in Password and security
Epic’s support procedure is:
- Open your Epic Games account and go to Password and security.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and select Set up.
- Choose an authenticator app, SMS, or email as the method.
- Enter the code sent by email or SMS, or the code generated by the authenticator app.
- Wait for the success confirmation. If you enable multiple methods, select which one should be the preferred primary method.
Authenticator apps are the strongest option recommended in Epic’s guidance because the code is generated on a device you control rather than delivered through a potentially vulnerable message channel. Keep the authenticator’s recovery information in a secure place. Add a backup method only when that backup account or phone number is itself protected; an unsecured backup can undermine the benefit of 2FA.
Secure the email on the account
The Epic email address can be used for password resets and security messages, so verifying it is not a formality. Sign in to the email provider directly, enable its 2FA, review recent sign-ins and forwarding rules, and remove unfamiliar recovery addresses or phone numbers. Never forward an Epic security email or its one-time code to another person. If a message asks you to click a login button, open the Epic account separately instead and check for notices there.
Review linked platforms
Open the Epic account’s connected or linked-accounts area and identify every Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Google, and Facebook connection. Remove an account you do not recognize, then enable 2FA on each platform you keep. A stolen linked-console session can provide an attacker with access even when the Epic password itself has not changed. Use a separate password on each platform and check the platform’s recent-login history after making changes.
Prepare the device and browser
Account security also depends on the device used to redeem an item. Install operating-system and browser updates, update Fortnite through its normal distribution channel, and keep antivirus protection current. Updates close vulnerabilities that a malicious download or compromised webpage might exploit.

- Use a personal device that you control, not a shared computer, school machine, cybercafé terminal, or a friend’s console profile.
- Do not save the Epic password in a browser on a shared device.
- Close extra tabs before signing in so a look-alike page is less likely to be confused with the official login.
- Do not install a file, browser extension, or “verification tool” to unlock a cosmetic item.

When the reward appears in Fortnite
Start Fortnite from the normal launcher or console interface and inspect the in-game news, event, item, or claim screen. Follow only controls presented by the game itself. If the screen sends you to a website, close the link and open the official Epic account page manually rather than trusting a redirected address. The claim should be associated with the Epic account currently signed in; it should not require handing the account to another player.
When the reward appears in the Epic Games Store or an official Epic page
Open the store or website yourself, confirm that the browser shows the official Epic identity, and read the description before accepting. A genuine promotion may require you to be signed in, but Epic states that it asks for a password only on official Epic Games login pages. Do not type an Epic password into a form embedded in a giveaway article, survey, chat, or social-media page. Close suspicious tabs and navigate to the official account area from a fresh tab.
When a code is involved
Use only the redemption interface provided by an official Epic channel. Do not post the code publicly, send it to a trader, or enter it into a site that promises extra V-Bucks for completing surveys. Because the reward is attached to account security, a website offering a different “2FA skin code” should not be treated as an Epic redemption route. Do not disable 2FA after receiving the emote merely because a third-party page claims it is required; that would reduce account protection.

Do you need 2FA for every free item?
Not every legitimate cosmetic promotion is documented as requiring 2FA. The specific Epic reward tied to enabling 2FA is the Boogie Down emote in Battle Royale, with the additional Save the World items listed above. Other promotions can have their own terms displayed in Fortnite, the Epic Games Store, or an official Epic page. Requests that should end the transaction immediately

Stop if a page asks for your Epic password, email password, recovery code, or current 2FA code outside the official Epic login flow. Epic’s stated rule is direct: “Epic Games will only ask for your password on official Epic Games login pages.” No giveaway organizer, content creator, friend, or support impersonator needs your one-time code to deliver a cosmetic item.

Account transfer or unknown linking
Never give another person ownership, recovery access, or a login session in exchange for a skin. Do not link an unknown app or service just to pass a giveaway check. Close the page, delete any downloaded file without opening it, and run a security scan if a file was executed.

- Stop using the suspicious page and close it. Do not return to complete a survey or claim.
- From a clean, trusted device, open the official Epic account page directly and change the Epic password to a new, unique password.
- Change the password on the email account and any linked platform that used the exposed password, beginning with the email account because it controls resets.
- Enable or reconfigure 2FA, favoring an authenticator app, and remove unknown linked accounts, sessions, recovery addresses, and forwarding rules.
- Review Epic, email, console, and payment activity for changes you did not make. Contact official Epic support through its normal support channel if you cannot sign in or see unauthorized changes.
- Update the device, run a current antivirus scan, and remove any suspicious download or extension. If malware may have run, use a different clean device for password changes.
Do not negotiate with the person who claims to have your account or pay a “recovery” fee. A demand for money or more codes is another scam signal.
A practical decision test for any free-skin post
Before signing in, ask four questions:
- Where did it originate? Is the offer visible in Fortnite, the Epic Games Store, an official Epic website, or a verified Epic social account?
- Where would credentials be entered? Would the password go only to an official Epic login page that you opened yourself?
- What does it cost? Is there no payment, outside V-Bucks purchase, account trade, or gift-card demand?
- What changes on the account or device? Does the claim avoid unknown links, ownership transfer, software installation, and requests to disable security?
