The most direct way to add two-factor protection to a Battle.net account is Blizzard’s Authenticator feature in the Battle.net mobile app for iOS and Android. After you connect the app, a sign-in can require approval from a push notification or from inside the app, so a stolen password alone is less useful to an attacker. Blizzard describes the Authenticator as optional two-factor authentication designed to protect an account from unauthorized access.
Setup is intentionally simple: install the official Battle.net app, sign in, and follow its prompts to attach the Authenticator. The exact screen names can change, so use the current Blizzard Support instructions if the app presents different wording. Then strengthen the rest of the account with a unique password, careful phishing habits, recovery information you can still access, and a plan for a lost or replaced phone.

What the Battle.net Authenticator protects
An Authenticator adds a second verification step to a Battle.net sign-in. Your password is one factor; an approval generated or delivered through the Battle.net mobile app is the second. An attacker who obtains only the password should not be able to complete a protected sign-in without that additional approval.
Blizzard’s current implementation is a feature of the Battle.net mobile app, not a separate physical device that you must buy. The feature is described for both iOS and Android. Blizzard says approvals can arrive as a one-tap push notification or be completed from within the app when prompted.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Two-factor authentication reduces the damage from password reuse, credential-stealing malware, and phishing, but it does not make an account invulnerable. A convincing fake login page can still steal a password, and an attacker who gains control of your email, phone, or unlocked device may be able to interfere with recovery. Treat the Authenticator as one layer in a broader account-security plan.
What you need before setup
- An iPhone, iPad, or Android device that can install the official Battle.net mobile app from its normal app storefront.
- Your Battle.net account email address and password so you can sign in to the app.
- Access to your account’s recovery information. Keep the email account used for Battle.net secure and available before changing security settings.
- A screen-lock method on the phone, such as a passcode, PIN, pattern, or biometric unlock, so another person cannot approve a sign-in from an unattended device.
- A few minutes to complete an approval test and record how you will recover access if the phone is lost.
A phone number is optional when creating a Battle.net account. Some Battle.net services use SMS, but Blizzard does not state that SMS is universally required to use the Authenticator or that every region offers the same phone features. Do not assume that a phone number, SMS delivery, or a particular recovery option is available everywhere.
How to attach an Authenticator in the Battle.net app
Blizzard’s documented path is to connect the Authenticator from the mobile app. Because the app is updated independently of this article, follow the wording shown on your device rather than looking for an exact button label copied from an older guide.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Check the publisher name before installing; avoid unofficial APK files, mirrored downloads, or links sent in chat.
- Open the app and sign in. Use the Battle.net account you want to protect. If you use several accounts, verify the account email shown in the app before attaching anything.
- Start the Authenticator setup. Use the app’s security or account prompts to attach an Authenticator, then follow each confirmation step. Blizzard’s support heading for this task is “How to attach an Authenticator to your Battle.net account.” If the current app uses different wording, select the option that adds or connects an Authenticator rather than one that removes it.
- Confirm ownership when asked. The app may require an additional account check. Complete only prompts displayed inside the official app or on an official Blizzard sign-in page; do not send a code to someone who contacts you in game, by email, or through social media.
- Finish the connection. Wait for the app to report that the Authenticator is attached. Do not uninstall the app, clear its data, or reset the phone until you have completed an approval test.
- Test a sign-in. Sign in to Battle.net from a device or browser you recognize. Approve the request with the push notification or from within the app, as prompted. If no request appears, open the app and check for an in-app approval option rather than repeatedly entering passwords.
- Secure the recovery path. Confirm that your Battle.net email account is protected with its own unique password and, where available, two-factor authentication. Keep the phone’s lock screen enabled and know where to find Blizzard’s current recovery instructions before you need them.
Never approve a prompt you did not initiate. An unexpected request can mean that someone has your password and is trying to sign in. Deny it, change the Battle.net password from a trusted device, and investigate the account for other signs of compromise.
How sign-in approvals work
Push notification approval
When Battle.net requests an additional verification, the app can present a push notification. Review the request before tapping approve. If the location, device, or timing looks unfamiliar, deny it and treat the event as a possible attempted takeover.

Approval inside the app
If a push notification is delayed or disabled, Blizzard says approval can also be handled within the Battle.net app. Open the app directly instead of following a link in an email or message. Use the pending request shown there, if available, and then return to the sign-in screen.
When notifications do not arrive
Check that the phone has an internet connection, notifications are enabled for the Battle.net app, and the app is allowed to run normally in the background. Then open the app manually and look for an in-app approval. Avoid disabling the Authenticator merely because one push message was delayed; first try the documented in-app path or Blizzard Support’s current troubleshooting guidance.

Strengthen the account around the Authenticator
Use a unique, long password
Blizzard recommends a unique password and warns against sharing passwords. Do not reuse the Battle.net password on email, social networks, game forums, or other services. A password manager can generate and store a different password for each account. If you cannot use one, create a long passphrase that is not based on your character name, birth date, guild, or a phrase visible on your public profiles.
Change the password immediately if you entered it on a suspicious page, approved an unexpected sign-in, installed an untrusted program, or received an alert about a change you did not make. Changing a password does not replace investigating the device and recovery channels.
Defend against phishing
Phishing messages imitate Blizzard login pages, account warnings, giveaway offers, support agents, and in-game notifications. They may pressure you to act quickly or ask for a one-time code. Blizzard highlights phishing as a way accounts are stolen.

- Open the Battle.net app or type the known Blizzard address yourself instead of using an unsolicited link.
- Check the address bar before entering credentials. A page that merely looks like Blizzard is not proof that it is operated by Blizzard.
- Never disclose an Authenticator approval, one-time code, password, or recovery information to another player or supposed support agent.
- Be suspicious of messages that offer account rewards, demand immediate verification, or claim that your account will be closed unless you sign in.
- Report or delete suspicious messages rather than replying. A real support case should be handled through Blizzard’s official support channel.
Protect the email account
The email address attached to Battle.net is a high-value recovery target. Use a separate password for it, enable its available multi-factor protection, keep recovery details current, and review sign-in alerts. If an attacker controls the email account, they may be able to intercept password-reset messages even when the Battle.net Authenticator is enabled.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the phone and computer trustworthy
Install operating-system and app updates, use a screen lock, and avoid installing pirated software or unknown browser extensions. Blizzard advises securing the computer as well as the account when compromise is suspected. Scan for malware and remove suspicious programs before completing sensitive recovery steps. Do not approve an Authenticator request from a phone that may be unlocked or controlled by someone else.
Consider passkeys as an additional measure
Blizzard’s security guidance mentions passkeys as another protective measure. Availability and setup depend on the account, device, and current Blizzard support flow. Treat a passkey as an additional sign-in option, not as a reason to abandon the Authenticator or password protections without understanding how recovery will work.
Recovery planning before you lose the phone
Recovery is easiest while you are still signed in and still have access to the account’s email and registered phone. Write down the account email, keep the recovery phone current if you use one, and know how to reach Blizzard Support from a trusted device. Do not store one-time codes in an exposed note or share them with anyone.
Blizzard’s account-security information describes Battle.net Phone Notifications as a possible way to remove a lost Authenticator, unlock an account, recover the account name, or reset a password. Phone notifications can also alert you about password changes and additions or removals of security features. Eligibility, supported regions, and the exact screens can vary, so confirm the options shown for your account in the current Blizzard Support flow.

| You are still signed in on a trusted device and still have the Authenticator phone | Open the account-security settings and follow the current Blizzard instructions to manage the Authenticator. | You may be able to attach a replacement device or remove the old Authenticator while authenticated. Exact labels can change. |
| You lost the phone but can receive messages on the registered phone number | Check whether Battle.net Phone Notifications offers a removal, unlock, account-name recovery, or password-reset option for your account. | Blizzard describes these capabilities, but eligibility and regional support are not universal. |
| You have the phone but the app is inaccessible | Restore access to the phone and app first, then use Blizzard’s current lost-or-inaccessible-Authenticator support article. | Do not repeatedly guess codes or approve unknown requests. The support flow may require account-recovery verification. |
| You lost both the phone and access to the registered number | Start Blizzard’s account-recovery process from a trusted computer and provide the requested ownership information. | Additional verification may be required. The available recovery methods depend on the account and region. |
| You suspect someone changed the password or security settings | Use Blizzard’s recovery guidance, then secure the Battle.net account, email account, and computer. | Do not continue normal play until you have checked for unauthorized changes and removed malware or suspicious software. |
Blizzard’s support search includes “How to remove your Blizzard Authenticator” and guidance for lost or inaccessible Authenticators. Search those titles in the current Blizzard Support site rather than relying on a screenshot or third-party tutorial that may describe an obsolete interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you suspect the account was compromised
- Stop entering credentials into questionable pages. Close the page and use a trusted browser or the official app.
- Secure the computer. Disconnect from suspicious software, run a reputable malware scan, remove unknown extensions, and install pending operating-system updates.
- Recover the Battle.net account. Use Blizzard’s account-recovery process if you cannot sign in or if the password was changed.
- Change the Battle.net password. Use a new password that has never been used on another service.
- Secure the email account. Change its password, enable its available multi-factor protection, and review forwarding rules and recent sign-ins.
- Inspect security changes. Look for an unfamiliar phone number, password change, Authenticator removal, passkey, or other account-setting change.
- Reattach or replace the Authenticator. Follow the current Blizzard Support instructions after the account and device are trustworthy again.
- Review messages and transactions. Check for unauthorized communications, purchases, or character changes and report them through Blizzard’s official support process.
Do not treat a successful password change as proof that the computer is clean. Malware or a compromised email account can capture the replacement password and undo your work.
Common problems and fixes
The app is not available in your storefront
Verify that you are searching the official iOS or Android storefront and that your device meets its current requirements. Regional storefront availability can differ. If the app cannot be installed, use Blizzard’s account-recovery and support pages for the options available in your region; do not install an unofficial copy.
The approval prompt is missing
Check internet access, notification permissions, battery restrictions, and whether the app is signed in to the correct Battle.net account. Open the app directly to look for an in-app request. If the problem persists, use Blizzard Support’s current Authenticator troubleshooting guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You changed phones
If the old phone still works and you remain signed in, use the account-security flow to manage the Authenticator before wiping the old device. If the old phone is unavailable, choose Blizzard’s lost-or-inaccessible-Authenticator or recovery path. Do not erase the old phone until you have confirmed that the replacement device can approve a sign-in.
Best Value
You are receiving approvals you did not request
Deny every unexpected request, change the Battle.net password from a trusted device, secure the email account, and scan the computer. Repeated prompts usually indicate that someone is attempting to use a password; accepting one can grant access.
SMS does not work
The Authenticator is not the same as SMS delivery. Blizzard recommends the Authenticator as an alternative verification method when SMS delivery is unreliable, but SMS features and eligibility vary by service and region. Follow the recovery method actually offered for your account instead of assuming that a text message is required.
You cannot remember the account email
Use Blizzard’s account-name recovery guidance. Battle.net Phone Notifications may provide account-name recovery for eligible accounts, but Blizzard does not state that this option is available in every region or situation.
Limits and misconceptions
- “The Authenticator replaces a password.” It does not. It adds another verification step; keep the password private and unique.
- “Every push prompt is safe to approve.” No. Approve only a request you initiated and recognize.
- “A phone number is always required.” Blizzard says a phone number is optional for creating a Battle.net account, although some services use SMS.
- “A physical security key is guaranteed to work.” The documented material does not establish compatibility with a particular physical key. Do not buy one for this purpose based on assumption.
- “Two-factor protection fixes an infected computer.” It does not. A compromised device can steal new credentials or active sessions, so secure the computer as part of recovery.
- “The setup screens never change.” They can. Use the current in-app prompts and Blizzard Support article rather than an old walkthrough’s button names.
Ongoing maintenance checklist
- Keep the Battle.net app, phone operating system, computer, and browser updated.
- Use a unique Battle.net password and never share it or an Authenticator code.
- Keep the email account and recovery information current and protected.
- Review unexpected sign-in or security-change alerts immediately.
- Deny unrequested push approvals and investigate why they occurred.
- Before replacing or wiping a phone, confirm that the new device can complete an Authenticator approval.
- Revisit Blizzard Support after a major app or account-security change for current attachment, removal, and recovery instructions.
The Authenticator is free software inside the Battle.net mobile app, so no dedicated hardware purchase is needed for the setup Blizzard currently documents. The practical goal is layered protection: a unique password, a trustworthy phone and computer, guarded recovery channels, and a second-factor approval that you grant only when you initiated the sign-in.
