How to Secure Your Bank Accounts After Entering Credentials in a Suspicious App

Contact your bank or credit union now using a trusted number or its official website, explain that you entered your login in a suspicious app, and ask it to secure your access and review account activity. Then change the exposed password from a device and login channel you trust, check for unauthorized transactions or account changes, and report anything suspicious promptly. Entering a password does not, by itself, prove your phone is infected.

What should I do if I entered my bank details into a suspicious app?

Start with the financial institution: the FBI advises contacting it as soon as you recognize possible fraud. Use the number on the back of your card, on a bank statement, or on the bank’s official website or app reached independently. Do not use a phone number or link supplied by the suspicious app, a message, or an unexpected caller.

  1. Call the bank or credit union. Say that you entered your credentials into a suspicious app. Ask it to secure online access and check recent transactions and account changes.
  2. Change exposed credentials. From a device and sign-in channel you trust, reset the bank password and change any other exposed passwords. If you cannot sign in, use the bank’s independently verified account-recovery route.
  3. Review account activity. Look for unfamiliar withdrawals, transfers, payees, or changes to contact details. Report anything unauthorized to the institution promptly.
  4. Take any additional steps that match what was exposed. Broader identity information or app permissions may call for different actions, covered below.

The bank’s fraud-reporting and recovery process depends on the institution and transaction. Do not assume a transfer can be reversed or that reimbursement is guaranteed.

How do I protect my bank account after giving an app my login?

Reset the password and remove reuse

Change the bank password and any other credentials you entered. If you reused the same password on other accounts, change it there as well. Use a new, strong, unique password; a password manager can help create and store unique passwords.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Turn on multifactor authentication

Enable multifactor authentication (MFA), also called two-factor authentication, if your bank offers it. MFA adds a layer of protection, but it does not undo the exposure: the FBI warns that it cannot protect you if you enter your credentials on a fraudulent page. Still contact the bank and change the exposed password.

Watch for impersonation attempts

Be cautious of unexpected calls or messages claiming to be from your bank and asking for a username, password, or one-time passcode. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) says, “Companies generally do not contact you to ask for your username, password, or OTP.” Contact the bank using a trusted number or website instead.

What account activity should I check?

Review recent transactions and account settings for activity you do not recognize, including withdrawals, transfers, newly added payees, and changed contact details. Keep monitoring after the first check and report new unauthorized activity to the bank promptly.

If a fraudulent wire transfer occurred, IC3 advises reporting it immediately to both your financial institution and IC3. Contacting IC3 does not replace contacting the bank.

Does entering my bank password mean my phone has malware?

No. A password entered into an app or fake sign-in screen may be exposed without proving the phone is infected. The risk to the device is different if the app was installed and given access to data or functions such as text messages, contacts, saved passwords, or card information.

  • If you installed the app or granted it permissions, stop using it and review and revoke its permissions where possible.
  • If you see signs the phone or computer itself was accessed, update trusted security software and run a scan. If you need help, contact the device maker or a trusted technical person.
  • Do not install a security tool or follow cleanup instructions sent by the suspicious app or an unexpected contact.

When should I freeze my credit or take identity-theft steps?

Use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov if you also exposed a Social Security number or other identity information, or you see signs that someone is trying to open accounts in your name. A credit freeze is free and must be placed separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can place an initial fraud alert through one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the others.

A freeze is aimed at preventing new credit accounts. It does not secure an existing bank login, so it is not a substitute for changing exposed credentials and contacting the bank.

Where should I report the incident, and what should I save?

For U.S. consumers, report scams to the Federal Trade Commission. Report account takeover or a fraudulent wire to IC3 as appropriate. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also lists your state attorney general and local law enforcement as possible contacts.

Keep the app’s name and store listing or URL, screenshots, messages, dates, transaction records, and any bank case or reference numbers. These details can help when you explain what happened to the bank or make a report.

What if I’m outside the United States?

The reporting routes and credit-bureau procedures above are U.S.-specific. Wherever you are, contact your bank through an independently verified official channel, then use your country’s fraud-reporting and identity-recovery services. Dispute deadlines and available remedies vary by institution, transaction, and jurisdiction; there is no universal deadline or guaranteed recovery outcome established here.
