Turn on WhatsApp’s optional two-step verification, then inspect Linked devices regularly and sign out anything you do not recognize. Two separate secrets are involved: the six-digit registration code proves control of the phone number when an account is registered, while the two-step PIN or password adds another check. Never give either secret to another person. If someone has taken over your account, re-register your number with the six-digit code sent by SMS or phone call; WhatsApp says that logs out other devices automatically.
Menu names can differ by phone, app version and language. WhatsApp is moving from a six-digit two-step PIN to a password, so use the wording currently shown in your app rather than assuming every account has the same screen.

What the two WhatsApp security checks do
WhatsApp account security has two different stages that are often confused:

WhatsApp’s registration guidance states: “Remember: Never share your 6-digit registration code or password with anyone.” A genuine WhatsApp employee, friend or family member does not need either secret.

How the checks fit together
Think of the registration code as proof that you can receive messages or calls on the number. It is used when an account is registered or brought back to your phone. Two-step verification is a separate secret that you choose for the WhatsApp account. A person who knows your phone number but cannot provide the required verification information should not be able to complete the normal sign-in process.
The verified email has a narrower role. It may let WhatsApp send an email verification code when you sign in to an existing account on a new phone, but the documented flow still requires the active SIM associated with the number to be in that device. These mechanisms complement one another; none makes the others unnecessary.
Turn on two-step verification
Two-step verification is optional, but it is the most important account setting in this guide. It is separate from the one-time six-digit code WhatsApp sends when you register a number.
Open the current setting
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
- Open Account or the security section shown in your version of WhatsApp.
- Select Two-step verification. The label may instead refer to a password while WhatsApp’s PIN-to-password upgrade is being rolled out.
- Choose the option to enable or set up the additional verification.
Follow the prompts exactly as displayed. Some accounts still show a six-digit PIN, while others may show a password field. Do not assume the interface on another person’s phone matches yours.
Create a secret you can recover
Use a secret that is not your phone unlock code, voicemail PIN, birthday, address, or a number you have posted publicly. Do not reuse a password from email, banking or social-media accounts. A password manager can generate and store a strong value; if you write it down temporarily, keep the record somewhere private and secure.
WhatsApp may ask you to enter the PIN or password again to confirm it. A mismatch means setup has not completed, so repeat the entry carefully rather than guessing later.
Add and verify an email when offered
WhatsApp may offer an email field during two-step setup or in the account settings. A verified email can help WhatsApp send an email verification code when you sign in to an existing account on a new phone. Use an address you control and can access, then complete the verification message before leaving the settings screen.

Email is not a replacement for the phone number. WhatsApp’s guidance says the active SIM associated with the account’s number must still be in the device for the documented email-code sign-in flow. If you have lost the number, contact your mobile provider for a replacement SIM carrying that same number; an email alone cannot restore control of a lost number.
Confirm that setup finished
Return to the two-step verification screen. It should show that the feature is enabled or provide options to change the secret and email. If it still offers only an enable or set-up button, complete the process again. Keep the app updated through your phone’s normal app store, but expect the exact wording and layout to change as WhatsApp moves users from PIN terminology to password terminology.
Check which devices are linked to your WhatsApp
Linked devices are WhatsApp sessions associated with your account on computers, tablets, phones or other supported devices. A device can remain signed in after you used it, so a quick review can reveal an old work computer or a session you forgot about.
Open Linked devices
- Open WhatsApp on your primary phone.
- Open Settings.
- Select Linked devices. On some versions this item is reached from the account menu rather than directly in Settings.
- Wait for the list of active or recently linked sessions to load.
Read every entry rather than relying on the number of devices shown. Check the device type, browser or platform label and the last-used information that WhatsApp displays. An unfamiliar label, a computer you no longer own, or a session created while you were not using WhatsApp deserves immediate action.

- Tap or click the device entry you do not recognize.
- Choose Log out and confirm.
- Repeat for each session that is unnecessary or unknown.
Logging out removes that linked session; it does not change your phone number or erase your account. If you are unsure whether a listed computer belongs to you, sign it out and link it again later from the device you trust.
WhatsApp recommends checking linked devices regularly. Its help information also describes push notifications as a way to notice linked-device activity, so leave relevant notifications enabled on your phone and investigate an alert you did not expect.
Understand what the list cannot tell you
A device entry can show that a session exists, but WhatsApp says it cannot tell you who accessed the account or provide the precise time and location of that access. Do not wait for a name, map or forensic report that the app does not provide. Use the information available to decide whether to log out, then secure the number and account if anything looks wrong.

What to record during a review
Make a quick note of the device type, browser or platform label and any last-used detail shown in the list. This helps you distinguish a home computer from a former workplace machine and makes a later review faster. Do not treat a familiar-looking label as proof that the session is safe: if you cannot confidently identify it, logging out is the safer choice.

Set a practical inspection routine
Make a linked-device check part of a routine instead of waiting for a suspicious message. A monthly check is a reasonable reminder for a personal account; check immediately after using a shared or public computer, changing phones, or losing a device.
- Remove computers and tablets you no longer use.
- Log out of a borrowed, shared or workplace device when your session is finished.
- Investigate a push notification about a link you did not initiate.
- Do not connect your account to unofficial applications or websites that request WhatsApp credentials or codes.
- Keep your phone, operating system and WhatsApp protected by a screen lock and current updates.
Two-step verification and linked-device checks solve different problems. The extra secret helps prevent someone who obtains a registration code from completing access, while the device list lets you remove sessions that are already linked.
What to do if someone takes over the account
Act quickly, but do not send any code to the person who claims to be helping. The recovery path depends on whether you still control the phone number.
If you still receive calls or texts for the number
- Open WhatsApp on your phone and begin registration with your account’s phone number.
- Request the six-digit code by SMS or phone call.
- Enter the code in WhatsApp as soon as it arrives. Never share it with anyone.
- Complete any two-step verification prompt using your own PIN or password.
- After access returns, open Linked devices and log out every session you do not recognize.
- Review two-step verification and enable it if it was disabled, or change the secret if you believe it was exposed.
- Tell contacts that your account may have been impersonated, especially anyone who could have received requests for money, codes or personal information.
WhatsApp says that re-registering the phone number automatically logs out other devices. That is why entering the code on your own phone is the priority when you still control the number.

An attacker may have set a two-step secret that you do not know. Do not keep guessing and do not try to obtain the secret from the person who took over the account. WhatsApp’s official compromised-account recovery guidance says to wait seven days and try again if an unknown two-step PIN is requested. The seven-day period is a recovery procedure, not a guarantee that every account will display identical prompts.
Once the waiting period has passed and you regain access, immediately inspect linked devices, restore two-step verification with a secret you control, verify an email if the option is available, and warn contacts about possible impersonation.

If you no longer control the phone number
Email verification cannot substitute for the number in lost-number recovery. Contact your mobile provider and request a replacement SIM or other service that restores the same phone number. When the number is active on your phone, use WhatsApp’s normal registration process and protect the six-digit code. If the number has been permanently reassigned or cannot be recovered, WhatsApp’s documented workflows cannot verify that you control it.
After recovery, contain the damage
Start with the sessions, not with speculation about who was responsible. Re-registration should remove other devices, and the Linked devices screen lets you confirm what remains. Change or re-enable the two-step secret, verify the email address if available, and contact people who may have received messages from the impersonator. Ask them to ignore payment requests, links or requests for codes that appeared during the loss of access.

Never share a registration code
A scammer may claim that a code was sent to your phone by mistake, that they are from support, or that a friend needs help. The six-digit code is the proof WhatsApp uses to register the number. Giving it away can let another person move the account to their device.
Do not confuse an email code with permission to ignore the SIM
A verified email can provide an email verification code in the specific existing-account, new-phone scenario documented by WhatsApp. It does not make the associated phone number optional. Keep the correct SIM active in the device and treat every email code as confidential.
Do not trust an unfamiliar linked-device entry
An attacker does not need to know your contacts or explain the device label to remain connected. If you cannot confidently identify a session, log it out. You can create a fresh link later from a trusted device.
Do not use unofficial WhatsApp access tools
Unofficial applications and websites may ask for credentials, QR scans or registration codes and can expose conversations or account access. Use WhatsApp’s own app and its built-in Linked devices screen.

A concise recovery and maintenance checklist
- Use the current Settings path to find Account or security settings and enable two-step verification.
- Create a unique PIN or password and keep it private.
- Add and verify an email only if you control the address, while retaining access to the account’s active SIM.
- Open Linked devices and log out old, shared or unfamiliar sessions.
- Review the list regularly and pay attention to unexpected push notifications.
- Never share a six-digit registration code, two-step secret or email verification code.
- If the account is taken over, re-register the number on your phone using the SMS or call code.
- If an unknown two-step secret blocks recovery, follow WhatsApp’s seven-day wait instruction.
- After recovery, inspect linked devices again and alert contacts if an impersonator may have contacted them.
The strongest routine is simple: protect the phone number, keep the additional secret private, and remove every linked session you cannot identify. Because WhatsApp is changing the two-step setting from a PIN toward a password, follow the labels in your current app and confirm that the feature is enabled before leaving the screen.
