Use Samsung Knox Configure to stage the phone’s initial profile, then use your organization’s unified endpoint management (UEM) platform with Samsung Knox Service Plugin or OEMConfig for continuing security policies. Knox Configure and a UEM are complementary: Configure handles profile-based setup and customization, while the UEM applies the Knox controls that Samsung exposes through its management integration.
Before enrolling a fleet, verify the exact Galaxy model, country, Android and Knox versions, licensing, and UEM support. Samsung limits Knox Configure to selected devices and countries, and individual Knox policies can have their own version and ownership-mode requirements.

How the security architecture fits together
Samsung describes Knox Configure as “a cloud-based solution designed to simplify the setup and customization of Samsung Galaxy smartphones, tablets, and watches.” (Samsung Knox Documentation, updated February 26, 2026.) It is a staging and configuration service: you create a profile, assign it to devices, and apply that profile during enrollment or after a device is already in use.
The UEM is the continuing policy authority. Through the UEM’s Samsung Knox Service Plugin or OEMConfig integration, administrators can configure supported Knox Platform for Enterprise controls, such as Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth, APN, and device-care settings. Samsung’s documentation lists these controls separately from Knox Configure (Device controls documentation, updated September 4, 2026).

- UEM plus Knox Service Plugin/OEMConfig: ongoing enterprise policy, compliance enforcement, network and radio controls, device-care settings, certificates, and other Knox controls that the target device and management mode support.
- Knox Mobile Enrollment: an out-of-box route into an enterprise mobility management or UEM service. Samsung’s security white paper discusses feature-specific options such as Device Health Attestation, DualDAR, certificates, and advanced device lock; each requires compatible hardware, software, licensing, and UEM support (Samsung Knox Mobile Security White Paper, 2026).
Do not treat Knox Configure as a replacement for a UEM. A profile can prepare a phone for work, but the UEM must remain connected and correctly scoped if you need policies to change, compliance to be evaluated, or devices to be locked or retired later.
Prerequisites to verify before buying or enrolling
Confirm model, country and software eligibility
Samsung says Knox Configure works only with select Galaxy devices and in certain countries. An “Enterprise Edition” label alone does not prove that a particular model is supported in your country. Samsung’s assignment documentation says Enterprise Edition devices carry an “Enterprise Edition” tag in the Knox Configure console, but it does not establish universal geographic support (Assign a profile to a device, updated September 27, 2023).
- Record the exact model identifier, sales region, carrier variant, Android release, and Knox version for the phones you intend to deploy.
- Check Samsung’s current Knox Configure compatibility information for that model and country.
- Confirm that the UEM’s Samsung Knox Service Plugin or OEMConfig integration supports the same model, Android release, Knox version, and ownership mode.
- Test one representative device from every materially different model or regional variant before ordering the fleet.
Prepare the Knox account, license and network
Samsung lists a Knox account, supported Galaxy devices in supported countries, a Knox Configure license, a supported browser, and firewall exemptions for secure connectivity as prerequisites (Knox Configure prerequisites). Samsung documents a trial lasting up to three months for up to 30 devices. Commercial licensing is obtained through an authorized Knox license reseller; trial duration, device limits, pricing and regional availability can change, so confirm the current terms before deployment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Use a current supported release of Microsoft Edge, Firefox or Chrome for the Knox web console.
- Allow the secure outbound connections required by Samsung and your UEM; test from the networks where staging and first boot will occur.
- Keep separate administrative accounts and least-privilege roles for profile authors, enrollment operators and UEM policy administrators.
- Document the license assignment process and what happens when a device is retired, replaced or moved between profiles.
Decide the UEM ownership mode
UEM policy availability depends on whether the phone is a fully managed device (device owner), a work-profile device (profile owner), or another supported management state. The Knox Service Plugin documentation identifies prerequisites per control; a policy that appears in the UEM console may still be unavailable on a particular model, Knox version or ownership mode. Establish the intended ownership mode before writing the profile and test policy delivery on that mode.

Design the Knox Configure profile deliberately
Choose the edition and operating mode
Samsung’s profile guide distinguishes the Setup and Dynamic editions and the Normal and ProKiosk modes (Create profiles). The edition determines which configuration settings are available; the mode determines how much freedom the user has after setup.
- Setup edition: use when the profile’s main purpose is controlled initial setup and provisioning.
- Dynamic edition: use when the deployment needs profile behavior that can adapt after enrollment, subject to the settings Samsung exposes for the selected device and Knox version.
- Normal mode: appropriate when users need a conventional Galaxy experience with the restrictions you specify.
- ProKiosk mode: appropriate for a dedicated-purpose device whose interface and available functions must be tightly constrained.
Do not select ProKiosk merely because a phone is company-owned. List the tasks the user must perform, the settings they must reach, and the recovery actions administrators need. A mode that removes a required setting can create avoidable support work or force a wipe.
Set only the controls you can support
In the profile, choose the target device type and compatible Knox version, then configure the enrollment agreements, applications, content and restrictions required for the use case. Keep the profile minimal: every blocked setting, hidden application or altered agreement changes the user’s support path. Record the business reason and owner for each non-default restriction so that future administrators can distinguish a security requirement from a temporary workaround.

Protect profile administration
- Limit who can create, edit and assign profiles.
- Require a change record for edits to enrollment agreements, applications, restrictions and kiosk behavior.
- Use a naming convention containing purpose, edition, mode and revision, for example
Warehouse-Shared-ProKiosk-r03. - Retain an export or documented configuration baseline so you can compare a changed profile with the approved version.
Choose the correct enrollment route
New or factory-reset devices: OOBE or QR enrollment
A new or reset phone can enroll during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) or by scanning a QR code, following Samsung’s current instructions for that Android release (Enroll a device, updated June 24, 2025). Assign the profile before starting enrollment. A device that has no profile assignment cannot receive the intended configuration.
- In the Knox Configure console, create or select the approved profile.
- Assign the profile to the intended device records.
- On the new or reset phone, start OOBE or open the documented QR-enrollment path.
- Scan only the QR code intended for that deployment and complete the on-screen prompts.
- Wait for the profile to apply before handing the phone to the user or installing additional work applications.
For a device that was not uploaded by a reseller, Samsung requires QR enrollment for Knox Configure enrollment. QR enrollment binds the device to the profile associated with that QR code; the user cannot select a different profile through that code until the device is unassigned.
Phones already in use: browser enrollment
Use browser enrollment when the phone is already in service and a reset is not practical. Follow the current Samsung procedure for the exact Android version, authenticate with the enrollment details supplied by your administrator, and keep the device connected until the profile status is confirmed. Browser enrollment does not remove the need to assign a profile first.
Treat QR codes as deployment secrets
Samsung warns that enabling QR enrollment for devices not uploaded by a reseller allows anyone who obtains the QR code to enroll a device (Create profiles). Distribute QR codes through a controlled channel, do not publish them in general help pages or open tickets, and invalidate or replace a code if access cannot be accounted for. Test the code with a spare phone and test the response when an unauthorized or wrong-model device attempts enrollment.

Assign, stage and verify each device
- Assign: select the intended device records and apply the approved profile. Confirm that the console shows the assignment before beginning enrollment.
- Stage: enroll a small representative batch, including each model, carrier variant, Android release and intended ownership mode.
- Observe: review the console’s device details and logs for successful configuration, profile state and error messages (Samsung assignment guidance).
- Validate: check that the expected user interface, applications, restrictions and enrollment agreements are present on the handset.
- Record: capture the device identifier, assigned profile revision, UEM record and test result in the deployment inventory.
For Android 13 and later, Samsung documents a device-side profile update path at Settings > Advanced features > Configuration service > Profile information > Update (Enroll a device). Menu names can change with the deployed software version, so verify the path on the image you actually ship.
Apply ongoing security controls through the UEM
After Configure has staged the phone, open the UEM console and add Samsung Knox Service Plugin or OEMConfig. The exact labels and policy groups vary by UEM, but Samsung documents device controls including Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth, APN and device care. Configure only controls that the target model, Knox version and ownership mode support.
Network and radio controls
- Define approved Wi-Fi networks and authentication parameters in the UEM rather than relying on users to type them manually.
- Restrict Bluetooth, NFC or tethering only when the work scenario requires it; test accessories, contactless workflows and support tools before enforcing the restriction.
- Control APN settings on managed cellular devices where the carrier and device support the required policy.
Device-care policy
Samsung documents a Device Care feature through the Knox Service Plugin and states that it requires Knox 3.14 or later (Device controls). Check the Knox version reported by each model before assigning that policy. If a handset is below the prerequisite, leave the control unassigned and use a supported alternative rather than assuming the UEM error indicates a network problem.
Certificates, attestation and data protection
Where your UEM and device support them, evaluate certificate deployment, Device Health Attestation and DualDAR as separate features. Samsung’s white paper describes these capabilities in the context of Knox Mobile Security, but availability is feature-specific and prerequisite-dependent. Confirm the required license, Android release, Knox version and UEM implementation in the product documentation for your environment before making them a compliance requirement.

Rollout sequence that limits exposure
- Inventory: collect model, country, Android release, Knox version, serial or hardware identifier, ownership mode and intended user or role.
- Eligibility gate: reject or quarantine records that do not match Samsung’s current Knox Configure support list or your UEM’s Knox Service Plugin support.
- Profile approval: review edition, mode, applications, agreements and restrictions with security, support and business owners.
- License and access: assign Knox Configure licensing, verify browser and firewall access, and restrict administrative roles.
- Pilot: enroll representative devices through every route you will use: OOBE, QR and browser enrollment where applicable.
- Policy test: push UEM policies, reboot, change networks and verify both enforcement and legitimate user workflows.
- Recovery test: simulate a failed enrollment, lost QR code, profile reassignment, device reset, lost device and an off-network first boot.
- Phased deployment: release in batches, monitor logs and help-desk reports, and pause if a model-specific failure appears.
Changes, reassignment and recovery
Plan the end of a profile as carefully as its first assignment. Samsung states that an unassigned device cannot be managed or receive push updates until another profile assignment is made (Enroll a device). Before unassigning, decide whether the device is being moved to a replacement profile, retired, wiped or transferred to another owner.
- Profile change: assign and verify the replacement profile, then confirm that the UEM still recognizes the same management record.
- Lost or stolen phone: use the UEM’s supported lock, compliance and retirement actions; do not rely on a Knox Configure profile alone for incident response.
- Reset phone: preserve the assignment and enrollment records if the device should return to service, and verify the post-reset enrollment route.
- Off-network deployment: provide a tested network path or staging location; a phone that cannot reach Samsung or the UEM may remain partially configured.
- Profile revision: stage the revised profile on a pilot device and document whether existing devices receive an update or require a different enrollment action.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The model does not appear eligible | Model, country or Knox version is outside current Knox Configure support | Verify the exact variant against Samsung’s compatibility information and test a supported representative device. |
| QR enrollment applies the wrong profile | The QR code is associated with another profile | Stop enrollment, check the code-to-profile mapping, unassign the device if necessary, and issue the controlled code for the intended profile. |
| A user can enroll an unmanaged phone | QR code was distributed beyond the intended operators | Restrict access, rotate or disable the exposed enrollment method, and review devices enrolled with that code. |
| Profile controls are missing | Selected edition, mode, device or Knox version does not expose the setting | Review the profile edition and compatible Knox version, then check Samsung’s current profile guide before redesigning the policy. |
| UEM policy shows unsupported or has no effect | Ownership mode, Knox version, model or plugin prerequisite is wrong | Confirm device-owner or profile-owner state, Knox version and UEM plugin support; test one device before broad assignment. |
| Device Care cannot be configured | Knox version is below 3.14 | Use a device meeting the documented Knox 3.14-or-later prerequisite or omit that policy. |
| An unassigned phone stops receiving updates | No replacement profile is assigned | Assign the intended profile and confirm the device returns to a managed state. |
