Update RouterOS to the current supported stable or long-term release for your device, close public access to management services, then check for signs of compromise. CERT Polska reported that attackers had used a chain of RouterOS vulnerabilities against devices with SSH reachable from the internet. Patching reduces the risk of that attack, but it does not establish that a device was never compromised.
What happened, and which routers were at risk?
On September 5, 2026, CERT Polska disclosed six RouterOS vulnerabilities and reported observing attacks against internet-accessible devices. Two flaws could be combined to take full control without authentication when SSH was supported and reachable. MikroTik’s September 3 advisory described an important security update and recommended upgrading.

The incident is often called MikroTrick. It was not simply one remote-code-execution bug: the reported full takeover depended on chaining vulnerabilities. CERT Polska highlighted three flaws with different effects:
Recommended Free Tools
- CVE-2026-67276: an SSH authentication bypass involving incomplete verification of RSA public keys. CERT Polska assigned it CVSS 9.2.
- CVE-2026-86060: SSH privilege manipulation using a crafted username. CERT Polska assigned it CVSS 9.2.
- CVE-2026-67277: a bandwidth-test flaw that could disclose memory or crash a router. CERT Polska assigned it CVSS 8.8.
CERT’s register also lists related issues affecting SSH, WebFig, and certificate or signature validation. The issues do not all have the same impact or require the same service to be exposed. The reported SSH attack chain is the urgent reason to patch and ensure that management access is not open to the internet.

How do I patch MikroTik RouterOS?
Install the current appropriate release, not merely the earliest version announced for this incident. The vendor’s downloads and changelog are the source of truth for release availability; versions vary by device architecture, branch, and update channel. As of October 4, 2026, MikroTik’s live downloads page showed later release activity than the initial advisory, so check it immediately before updating.
| Release information | What it means |
|---|---|
| Initial incident advisory: RouterOS 7.25 beta 3, 7.24.2, 7.23.4, and 6.49.21 | These were the first public fix versions listed by MikroTik for the incident. They are dated minimums, not a recommendation to stop updating there. |
| CVE-2026-67278 certificate/signature issue: 7.24.3 stable and 7.23.6 long-term | CERT Polska reported that the earlier correction in 7.24.2 and 7.23.4 was incomplete. Its register identifies these later builds as addressing the issue in those branches. |
| Current supported build for your device | Choose from the live MikroTik downloads and changelog for the device’s architecture and supported channel. Do not assume a version number from another branch applies to your router. |
- Identify the device and plan the change. Confirm its model, architecture, current RouterOS version, and supported update channels. For a production router, schedule a maintenance window and make sure you have a way to regain management access if the upgrade interrupts connectivity.
- Use a trusted management path. In WinBox or WebFig, open the Check for Updates workflow and select an appropriate current channel and update. Alternatively, use MikroTik’s downloads page to select the package for the device architecture. Follow the vendor’s model-specific instructions; there is no single upgrade command that is safe to assume for every deployment.
- Confirm the result. After the device restarts, reconnect through a trusted management path and check its RouterOS version. Review the current changelog if you need to confirm the release contents.
If you cannot patch immediately, treat that as temporary containment, not remediation. CERT Polska recommends disabling exposed services or blocking access from all addresses outside trusted management networks, especially SSH, WWW/WWW-SSL, and the bandwidth-test server. It also advises against initiating TLS connections from an unpatched device or using the built-in SSH clients (/system ssh and /system ssh-exec) in the untrusted communication situations described in its advisory. Restore normal use only after the device is updated and its exposure has been reviewed.

How should I limit remote access after patching?
MikroTik’s manual says the preconfigured firewall blocks management access from the WAN by default. Check that the relevant protections are still in place; do not remove firewall rules unless you understand their effect. The practical goal is to keep router administration off the public internet.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Disable management services you do not use.
- Do not expose SSH, WinBox, WebFig, or other management interfaces directly to the internet.
- If remote administration is necessary, reach the router through a VPN such as WireGuard. If that is not possible, restrict access to known, trusted source addresses.
- Check firewall and service settings after any configuration change, and avoid relying on an assumed default if the router has been customized.
How do I know if my MikroTik router was hacked?
Patch first, then investigate. Check the critical log entry associated with compromise and run /system/device-mode/print to inspect the flagged value. Also review the configuration for changes you cannot explain, including:
- Unexpected user accounts or changes to account privileges.
- Scripts or scheduler jobs you did not create.
- Unfamiliar tunnels, proxy servers, or other network services.
- Other unexplained configuration changes, especially those that grant remote access or persist after a restart.
CERT Polska described incident indicators including log entries such as login failure for user -2 from <ip> via ssh and user <name> added by ssh:-2@<ip>, as well as a highly privileged account named ops. Treat these as clues, not a complete detection checklist: their presence warrants investigation, but their absence does not establish that the router is clean.
What does Flagged mean in RouterOS?
MikroTik’s Device Mode manual says startup analysis can disable suspicious configuration entries and set flagged=yes. If the value is set, treat it as a serious warning: inspect the full configuration and assume compromise is possible. Do not clear the flag as your first response. Preserve relevant logs and configuration, investigate the changes, and change system passwords before clearing the state as part of a deliberate recovery.

A missing flag is not proof of safety. CERT Polska says the marker captures selected traces, and that the absence of the marker does not rule out an earlier compromise.
Should I reset my MikroTik router after a compromise?
If the router is Flagged or you find suspicious activity, use a clean rebuild rather than trusting the existing configuration. For an organization, follow its incident-response and reporting procedures; these steps are not a substitute for a forensic investigation.
Best Value
- W128339515
- Isolate the router. Restrict or disconnect its network access as appropriate, while preserving a trusted way to manage it if needed.
- Preserve evidence before resetting. Secure relevant logs and a copy of the configuration so the changes can be reviewed. Do not clear Flagged before investigation and evidence preservation.
- Reset and rebuild deliberately. After securing evidence, restore factory settings and reconfigure from a known-good, verified configuration. Do not blindly import a full backup that may contain attacker changes.
- Replace exposed secrets. Change passwords and rotate keys and other secrets that the router stored or could access. Review credentials and access paths on connected systems where the router’s compromise could have exposed them.
- Patch and recheck exposure. Install the current supported RouterOS build and verify that only intended, restricted management paths are available.
