If Rejetto HFS must remain available, check its exact version before changing settings. Do not keep HFS 2.x publicly exposed: Rejetto says HFS 2.3–2.4 is dangerous, has no official fix, and should no longer be used. For HFS 3, the current advisory and release listing checked on October 7, 2026 point to stable version 3.3.4—not an affected 3.0.0–3.2.0 build or a pre-release.
Is Rejetto HFS safe to use?
It depends on the branch and version. HFS 2.x is unsupported and cannot be made safe for public exposure by adding HTTPS, a VPN, or a stricter password. HFS 3 is not automatically safe just because it is version 3: specific releases have had security flaws, so check the installed version against current advisories and use a current stable release.

HFS 2.x: do not leave it publicly reachable
Rejetto, the HFS maintainer, warns that “Version 2.3-2.4 is dangerous and should not be used anymore” and says there is no official fix for version 2. DIVD documents CVE-2024-23692, an unauthenticated template-injection flaw that can lead to arbitrary code execution in HFS 2.3x through 2.4 RC07; its report says the old branch had no patch or workaround. Treat an internet-facing HFS 2 installation as a serious risk, not a configuration problem with a simple hardening solution.

In its October 6, 2026 advisory, CERT.UG/CC reports CVE-2026-61500 in HFS 3.0.0 through 3.2.0, with a CVSS score of 9.3. The issue involves predictable session-cookie signing behavior that could allow forged administrator sessions and potentially code execution. CERT.UG/CC recommends version 3.2.1 or later and restricting access. Rejetto’s release page, checked October 7, 2026, lists stable 3.3.4, released September 30, 2026, as the latest release and says it includes security fixes; 3.4.0-alpha1 is listed as a pre-release. Check the official HFS release page for the current stable build before upgrading.

Earlier HFS 3 flaws also show why “version 3” is not a sufficient security check. CVE-2024-39943 affected HFS versions before 0.52.10 on Linux, UNIX, and macOS when an authenticated remote user had upload permission; the cited advisory identifies 0.52.10 as the fix for that issue. That is a historical minimum fix, not a current version recommendation.
How do I secure HFS while it stays online?
Use layers to reduce exposure, but do not mistake them for a patch. Upgrade affected software first; then limit who and what can connect. CERT.UG/CC recommends restricting access to trusted networks or a VPN. Rejetto documents HTTPS and accounts as HFS features.

- Restrict network reachability. If every user does not need public access, limit the service to a trusted network or require VPN access. Review firewall and router rules so only intended networks and ports can reach the host.
- Use named accounts and least privilege. Give each person an individual account where supported, grant only the permissions they need, and remove obsolete accounts. Keep upload access limited to people who genuinely need it.
- Use HTTPS. HTTPS protects traffic between clients and the server from being read or altered in transit. It does not repair a vulnerable HFS version or prevent an authorized account from abusing excessive permissions.
- Share only necessary folders. Check every shared path and upload location. Avoid exposing unrelated files, configuration, backups, or directories that users do not need.
- Keep monitoring and settings reviewable. Retain logs and periodically check accounts, permissions, shared paths, and any custom server-side scripts for changes you did not authorize.
These controls reduce who can reach or use the service; they do not make an affected HFS version safe to expose. If a vulnerable HFS 2 installation must remain available briefly during migration, the safer course is to remove public reachability and limit access to the smallest trusted group possible while replacing it.
What should you do if HFS 2 must remain available?
- Identify the installed version. Check the application’s version information and record the operating system and build. Do not infer the version from the interface or assume an installation is current because it still runs.
- Determine who can reach it. From the host’s network and firewall configuration, establish whether it is reachable from the public internet, a company network, or only a restricted VPN. Close public access if it is not essential.
- Plan migration to a supported service. Rejetto and DIVD recommend moving away from HFS 2 to supported HFS 3. For any replacement, assess whether it receives security fixes, supports named users and trusted-network restrictions, lets you control uploads and permissions, provides auditable logs and configuration, and can be migrated without leaving unnecessary shares exposed.
- Keep any transition exposure narrow. If the old service cannot be shut down immediately, restrict it to trusted users and networks, disable unnecessary accounts and uploads, and share only the files required for the transition. This is exposure reduction, not a supported HFS 2 fix.
What if a vulnerable HFS server was exposed to the internet?
Installing a newer version does not establish that an older exposed server was never compromised. The Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium warns that “patching appliances or software to the newest version may provide safety from future exploitation, it does not remediate historic compromise.” It reported exploitation and malicious payload activity involving CVE-2024-23692, the HFS 2 flaw, and assigned it a CVSS score of 9.8.

As of October 5, 2026, BleepingComputer reported that VulnCheck honeypots had observed small-scale probing related to CVE-2026-61500; VulnCheck had not reported successful exploitation or post-exploitation activity at that time. That dated observation does not establish whether a particular HFS server was targeted or compromised.

- Record the exact HFS version and platform.
- Determine whether the service is reachable from the public internet.
- Move HFS 2 off public exposure and plan migration; do not treat network controls as a fix.
- For HFS 3, use the current stable release and check current advisories; the October 7, 2026 release listing showed stable 3.3.4.
- Limit access to trusted users and networks or a VPN, use HTTPS, and verify upload permissions and shared folders.
- If a vulnerable instance was internet-facing, review logs, accounts, configuration, and custom scripts for signs of compromise.
- Recheck the official release page and relevant security advisories because versions and disclosures can change.
HFS version guidance and the threat observation above reflect sources dated October 5–7, 2026; check current release and advisory information before making a deployment decision.
