Keep a crypto wallet seed phrase off your iPhone. Do not save it in Notes, Photos, screenshots, email, messages, password fields, cloud storage or any other digital location. Write the words down accurately, in order, and store the physical backup where strangers, visitors and thieves cannot reach it. Then harden the iPhone itself with a strong passcode, biometric security and Stolen Device Protection.
A crypto recovery phrase and Apple’s Recovery Key are different credentials. The first can restore a crypto wallet; the second helps recover an Apple Account. Treat both as secrets, but never substitute one for the other.

What a crypto seed phrase protects
A seed phrase, recovery phrase or wallet backup is the credential that can recreate a self-custody crypto wallet. Anyone who obtains the complete phrase may be able to restore the wallet on another device and control its assets. The phrase therefore has the same practical sensitivity as the keys to a safe: possession, not your identity or your iPhone, is what matters.
Your iPhone may display wallet balances or approve transactions, but the phrase is the recovery authority. A screen lock can protect the phone while it remains in your possession; it cannot make an exposed phrase secret again. Do not paste the phrase into an app, website, chatbot, support conversation or form, even when someone claims to be helping you recover funds.

- DURABLE AND INDESTRUCTIBLE: Made with grade 304 Steel, it's the long term solution to helping you safely store and backup your wallet’s seed phrase due to its resistance to corrosion. The various screws present in the tablet help protect it against deformation. It is also designed to have a fireproof threshold of house fires.
Wallet-provider guidance consistently recommends an offline backup and warns against digital copies. A photograph, screenshot, note, email draft or cloud file creates another place where malware, phishing, an account takeover or an accidental share could expose the words.
Keep the recovery phrase off your iPhone
Locations to avoid
- Apple Notes or any other note-taking app
- Photos, screenshots and scanned documents
- Email, text messages, chat apps and social-media drafts
- Password managers or browser fields that synchronize to the cloud
- iCloud Drive, device backups and other cloud storage
- Any website, wallet-support form, chatbot or customer-service conversation
Do not make a digital copy with the intention of deleting it later. Deletion may not remove synced copies, backups, thumbnails, cached files or a copy already viewed by an attacker. If the words have ever been entered into one of these places, treat the phrase as potentially exposed and follow the response steps below.
Use the iPhone for the wallet, not for the backup
You can use a wallet app on an iPhone while keeping its recovery phrase entirely offline. The app’s passcode, Face ID and the iPhone lock screen protect day-to-day access, while the physical backup is reserved for a legitimate recovery. Keep the phrase out of clipboard history and out of any field that might synchronize or be logged.

Create an accurate physical backup
- Prepare a private setting. Work where nobody can see or photograph the words. Disable cameras or move other people’s devices away from the workspace.
- Copy every word in order. Use the wallet’s verification flow if it provides one. Check spelling, sequence and legibility against the wallet’s confirmation screen before putting the backup away.
- Make only the copies you can control. Each additional copy increases the number of places an attacker could discover. If you create two copies for disaster recovery, secure both to the same standard.
- Store the copy physically. Choose a location protected from casual visitors, unauthorized household access and opportunistic theft. Do not label the container with terms such as “crypto,” “seed” or the wallet name.
- Test retrieval without exposing the phrase. Confirm that you can reach the storage location and read the words, but never type or photograph them merely to test a backup.
Paper is a straightforward medium and can be accurate when written clearly, but it can be damaged by water, heat or tearing. A metal backup plate is an optional durability choice marketed for greater resistance to fire, water and corrosion. Durability does not equal secrecy: somebody who finds an unprotected metal plate can use the words just as somebody who finds paper can.
| Backup medium | Durability | Privacy | Recording accuracy | Discovery or theft risk | Retrieval considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | Simple, but vulnerable to physical damage | Good when stored privately; the words remain readable to anyone who finds it | Easy to write and verify if handwriting is clear | Can be misplaced, seen or removed without obvious signs | Easy to retrieve if the storage location is remembered and accessible |
| Metal backup plate | Designed as a more durable option against fire, water and corrosion | Not inherently private; a discovered plate still reveals the phrase | Requires careful, permanent marking and verification | May attract attention if its purpose is obvious or if stored poorly | Requires a secure location and a way to identify the correct plate without labeling it openly |
No medium is theft-proof. The best choice is the one you can record correctly, protect from discovery and reliably retrieve during an emergency.

Harden the iPhone that accesses your wallet
Use a strong device passcode
Set a passcode that is difficult for somebody who knows you to guess. Do not share it with people who might handle the phone, and avoid entering it where a shoulder surfer or camera can observe. Face ID or Touch ID can reduce how often the passcode is exposed, but the passcode remains a critical credential for the device.
Turn on Stolen Device Protection
Apple’s Stolen Device Protection is designed for situations in which a thief has the iPhone and may know its passcode. On supported software, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode), authenticate, then find Stolen Device Protection and turn it on. Menu wording and availability can vary by iOS version.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Apple says the feature can require biometric authentication without a passcode fallback for certain sensitive operations. Some account or security changes also use a delay. Apple Support describes the sequence this way: “When Stolen Device Protection is turned on, more sensitive operations require a Security Delay: a successful Face ID or Touch ID, an hour wait, then an additional successful biometric authentication.”
When offered a location setting, choose Always if you want the additional protections everywhere rather than only away from familiar locations. The feature can slow legitimate security changes, but that delay is intentional: it gives you time to mark the phone as lost before a thief can complete a protected change.
Protect the Apple Account attached to the phone
- Keep two-factor authentication enabled for the Apple Account.
- Review trusted phone numbers and trusted devices periodically.
- Do not approve an unexpected sign-in request or share an Apple verification code.
- Update iOS through Apple’s normal Software Update screen so security fixes are installed.
- Keep automatic screen locking enabled and set a short interval appropriate for your use.
These controls protect the iPhone and Apple Account. They do not turn a phrase saved in an app into a safe wallet backup.

What to do if the iPhone is lost or stolen
- Mark it as lost immediately. Use iCloud.com/find from another device and select the missing iPhone. Apple says this sign-in flow does not require a verification code from the stolen trusted device.
- Lock and locate the phone. Follow the on-screen Lost Mode instructions and provide contact information only if you are comfortable displaying it on the device.
- Contact your carrier. Ask the carrier to suspend the cellular line and protect the account against an unauthorized SIM replacement.
- Review Apple Account security. From a trusted device, check trusted numbers, devices, sign-in activity and recovery methods. Remove anything you do not recognize and change credentials if there is any suspicion of compromise.
- Assess the wallet separately. If the seed phrase was never stored on the phone and the thief does not have it, the physical backup remains the recovery authority. If the phrase was photographed, typed or stored digitally, assume it may be exposed and move the assets to a newly generated wallet using a clean process.
Do not wait for the phone to reappear before taking these steps. A screen lock and Stolen Device Protection reduce some attack paths, but neither can revoke a phrase that an attacker already copied.
Understand Advanced Data Protection before enabling it
Advanced Data Protection is an optional Apple feature that end-to-end encrypts more iCloud categories, including iCloud Backup, Photos and Notes. With it enabled, Apple does not hold the encryption keys needed to recover that protected data.
Before turning it on, set up and safely retain a supported recovery method, such as your device passcode or password, a recovery contact or a personal recovery key. Apple Support warns: “If you enable Advanced Data Protection and then lose access to your account, Apple will not have the encryption keys to help you recover it — you’ll need to use your device passcode or password, a recovery contact, or a personal recovery key.”
This feature changes how Apple Account and iCloud data can be recovered. It does not make a crypto phrase stored in Notes, Photos or a backup an acceptable wallet backup. Keep the crypto phrase offline regardless of your iCloud encryption setting.
Apple Recovery Key versus a crypto recovery phrase
| Credential | What it restores | Where it belongs | What happens if it is exposed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crypto wallet seed or recovery phrase | A self-custody crypto wallet and its assets | Offline physical storage, protected as a secret | Someone with the phrase may restore and control the wallet |
| Apple Recovery Key | An Apple Account and its associated data, together with a trusted phone number and Apple device | Secure recovery storage for the Apple Account | It can affect Apple Account recovery; it does not restore a crypto wallet |
Apple describes its Recovery Key as a secret 28-character code. That number and purpose apply to Apple’s account-recovery system, not to a wallet’s word-based phrase. Never enter an Apple Recovery Key into a wallet app, and never enter a wallet phrase into an Apple recovery screen.

If your crypto phrase may have been exposed
Exposure means more than a confirmed theft. If you typed the phrase into a website, sent it to support, saved it in a screenshot, placed it in a cloud note or showed it to somebody whose device you cannot control, assume another person could have copied it.
- Stop using the exposed wallet for new deposits. Do not wait for an unauthorized transaction as proof.
- Create a new wallet. Use a trusted wallet setup process on a device you believe is clean. Generate a new phrase rather than reusing the old one.
- Move assets to the new wallet. Verify the destination address on the device before confirming each transfer. Account for network fees and any transaction limits that apply to the assets.
- Secure the new phrase offline. Record it privately, verify the order and spelling, and store it in a protected physical location.
- Remove digital remnants. Delete exposed photos, notes, messages and cloud files, but do not treat deletion as evidence that the phrase is safe again. The important action is moving assets to a wallet with a new phrase.
- Ignore recovery offers. Anyone who asks for the old or new phrase is asking for control of the wallet, regardless of the claimed company, urgency or promised refund.
A hardware wallet can be useful as an adjacent self-custody tool, but it does not rescue a phrase that has already been copied. Its recovery phrase still needs offline protection.
Build a practical storage plan
Choose the location by threat, not convenience
Consider who could discover the backup, what physical events could damage it and whether you could reach it during travel, hospitalization or a home emergency. A concealed, access-controlled location is more important than an impressive container. If you use two geographically separate copies, ensure both are equally private and that no label identifies their purpose.
Limit knowledge of the backup
Tell only the people who must know how to recover your assets, and explain that the words must never be photographed or entered into a website. A trusted person who knows where a sealed backup is stored should not automatically know the phrase itself.

Review without re-entering the words
At a planned interval, check that the physical copy is still present, legible and protected from moisture or corrosion. Do not open it in front of visitors, scan it or type it into the wallet merely to perform a “test.”
Common mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it is dangerous | Safer correction |
|---|---|---|
| Saving a screenshot or note “temporarily” | Copies may sync, back up or be viewed by malware or another person | Write the phrase directly onto a private physical backup |
| Sending the phrase to wallet support | Legitimate support should not need the recovery credential; a fake agent can empty the wallet | Use only public troubleshooting information and keep the phrase private |
| Relying on the iPhone lock alone | A known passcode, account takeover or copied phrase can bypass the intended protection | Enable Stolen Device Protection and keep the phrase offline |
| Assuming Advanced Data Protection protects wallet secrets | It encrypts selected iCloud data; it does not make a digital wallet phrase a recommended backup | Keep the crypto backup physically offline |
| Keeping a phrase after suspected exposure | An attacker may restore the wallet later without warning | Create a new wallet and transfer assets promptly |
| Labeling a container with “seed phrase” | The label advertises the value of what is inside | Use discreet storage and limit who knows its purpose |
A concise iPhone security checklist
- Seed phrase recorded accurately, in order, on a physical medium.
- No phrase stored in Notes, Photos, screenshots, email, messages, password fields or cloud storage.
- Backup location protected from casual access, theft and physical damage.
- Strong iPhone passcode and Face ID or Touch ID enabled.
- Stolen Device Protection enabled, with Always selected when that option is available and appropriate.
- Apple Account trusted numbers, devices and recovery methods reviewed.
- Advanced Data Protection enabled only after a supported Apple recovery method is secured.
- iCloud.com/find ready for immediate use if the iPhone disappears.
- Any suspected phrase exposure treated as a reason to create a new wallet and move assets.
Bottom line
Your iPhone can be a secure way to use a crypto wallet when its recovery phrase stays completely offline. Protect the phone with a strong passcode, biometrics and Stolen Device Protection; protect the phrase with a private physical backup; and use Lost Mode quickly if the device is stolen. Keep Apple’s 28-character Recovery Key in its own Apple Account recovery plan, because it cannot restore a crypto wallet.
