Keep every API key, access token, password, private key and service credential out of source code, client applications and AI-agent context. Store development secrets outside committed files, use a managed secret store or short-lived workload identity in production, limit each credential to one purpose, monitor use and spending, and rehearse revocation. If a key may have leaked, revoke it first, then replace and redeploy it.

This layered approach matters because AI coding assistants and connected tools can read files, inspect terminals, call shells and access MCP servers. An environment variable can protect a value from source control while still exposing it to a process, an agent, a CI job or a compromised dependency.

What counts as a credential, and why AI tools change the risk

Handle API keys, OAuth access tokens, refresh tokens, database passwords, cloud access keys, SSH keys, signing keys and service-account credentials as secrets. A leaked API key can let an outsider impersonate your application, consume quota, create charges, access data or pivot into another system. Human sign-in passwords are also secrets, but they belong to a different control path: people should authenticate with personal accounts, multifactor authentication and a password manager; applications should use scoped, replaceable credentials or workload identity.

AI tools add another route to exposure. A coding agent may be able to read a project directory, search the filesystem, inspect shell history, capture terminal output, use an IDE’s open files, invoke CI jobs or call connected MCP servers. A secret excluded from Git can still be visible to that agent. A prompt containing a token can also become part of logs, transcripts or model context.

The four questions to ask for every secret

  • Where does it live? Source code, a local environment, an operating-system credential store, CI, a deployment platform, a secret manager or an identity provider.
  • Who or what can read it? A developer process, an AI agent, a build job, a deployed service, an MCP server or a human administrator.
  • What can it do? Identify the API, project, environment, allowed operations, network locations and spending authority.
  • How quickly can you replace it? Record an owner, expiry or rotation schedule, usage alerts and a tested revocation procedure.

Build a credential inventory before changing configuration

Start with an inventory for each AI-enabled application and development workspace. Include credentials loaded from environment variables, dotfiles, IDE settings, shell profiles, command history, CI variables, deployment platforms and connected tools. Record the service, owner, purpose, environment, permissions, creation date, expiry, last rotation and monitoring destination.

Map the AI tool’s actual access rather than relying on its product description. Check whether it can read the repository root, parent directories, home-directory files, temporary files, terminal scrollback, editor buffers, issue trackers, cloud consoles or MCP servers. Review every connected server and tool, remove unused integrations and require explicit approval for tools that can write, deploy, send messages or retrieve data.

A practical inventory worksheet

Credential Used by Environment Required permission Owner and replacement path
AI provider project key Backend service Production Only the API operations the service calls Service owner; revoke and deploy a new project key
Developer token One developer process Local development Development project only Individual owner; delete and recreate
CI credential One build or deployment job CI Minimum deployment scope Platform owner; rotate in CI secret settings
MCP connection credential Specific connected server Agent workspace Read-only or narrowly defined tool scope Integration owner; disconnect, revoke and reconnect

Store secrets according to the environment

Local development: keep values out of code and agent-readable files

For a local process, an approved environment-variable flow or operating-system credential store is preferable to putting a key in application source. Use a local configuration file only when your team’s agent and filesystem controls explicitly exclude that file from agent context and backups. Add it to .gitignore, but do not mistake that setting for an access-control boundary: .gitignore changes Git’s default behavior; it does not stop a local AI agent from opening the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a development-only credential with the smallest practical project and API scope.
  2. Load it through your shell, IDE credential integration or operating-system store using your organization’s approved method.
  3. Start the application so the process receives the value without placing it in source code.
  4. Do not print the value to test configuration. Terminal output may be captured by an agent, shell logger, CI transcript or support tool.
  5. Keep secret files outside the workspace when possible, and configure the agent to exclude any path that must remain on disk.

Do not paste a credential into an AI prompt, chat transcript or terminal command. Avoid commands that place secrets in shell history, process listings or copied output. If a tool needs a credential, prefer a scoped integration that supplies it directly rather than exposing the raw value to the model.

Production: use centralized secret management or workload identity

An environment variable can be a delivery mechanism, not a complete production secret-management strategy. In production, use a managed secret store or key-management service that provides access control, audit logs, versioning and rotation. Where the platform and provider support it, use short-lived workload identity or identity federation so the workload obtains temporary authorization without holding a long-lived API key.

Give each service its own secret reference and retrieve it at runtime through an authenticated workload. Keep development, staging and production credentials separate. Do not copy a production value into a developer machine, test fixture, container image, build artifact or agent workspace.

CI and deployment systems

Store CI credentials in the platform’s encrypted secret facility, restrict which jobs and branches can request them, mask values in logs and prevent untrusted pull requests from receiving production secrets. Prefer a deployment identity that can perform only the release actions required. Review artifacts, caches and diagnostic bundles because a failed build can accidentally preserve environment data.

Limit what each credential can do

Least privilege is the primary defense when a key is exposed. OWASP’s Secrets Management guidance states: “New secrets must have the minimum privileges assigned to them to enable their required use/role.” Apply that rule to API operations, projects, resources, networks and time.

Separate people, projects, products and environments

  • Create an individual credential for each developer rather than a shared team key.
  • Use distinct credentials for development, staging, production, testing and one-off migration jobs.
  • Use separate keys for separate products or services so usage can be attributed and one incident has a smaller blast radius.
  • Prefer project-scoped keys for collaboration. Team members can be removed without changing every other service.
  • Use expiration, scheduled rotation or short-lived tokens where supported.
  • Apply IP, network or workload restrictions only as an additional layer; they do not replace revocation and least privilege.

Choose scope and lifetime deliberately

Situation Safer credential design Reason
Local experimentation Individual development key limited to a non-production project Limits charges and data access if a laptop or workspace is exposed
Backend API call Service-specific production credential with only required operations Prevents unrelated services from inheriting access
Automated deployment Short-lived job identity or narrowly scoped CI credential Reduces the value of a leaked build secret
Temporary migration Expiring credential with a defined deletion date Prevents forgotten administrative access
Human account Personal password-manager credential plus multifactor authentication Preserves individual accountability and supports session revocation

Keep API keys out of browser and mobile applications

Do not embed a provider API key in JavaScript shipped to a browser, a mobile application’s package, a desktop binary or an image. Users can inspect network requests, unpack application files or instrument the runtime. OpenAI’s API authentication guidance puts the rule plainly: “Remember that your API key is a secret! Do not share it with others or expose it in any client-side code (browsers, apps).”

The backend pattern

  1. The browser or mobile app authenticates the user to your backend using your normal user-session mechanism.
  2. The backend authorizes the requested operation and validates limits, input and account entitlements.
  3. The backend retrieves its provider credential from a server-side secret store or workload identity.
  4. The backend calls the AI service and returns only the data the client needs.
  5. The backend records usage, errors and cost-relevant metadata without logging the secret or sensitive prompt content.

If a provider offers a purpose-built, short-lived client token for a specific browser or mobile flow, use that documented mechanism with narrow scope and expiry. Do not substitute a permanent account or project key.

Protect credentials from AI coding agents and connected tools

AI-agent security requires controls around both files and tools. An exclusion rule reduces accidental context exposure, but it is not a guarantee against every plugin, shell command, backup process or malicious dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce file and context exposure

  • Keep production secret files outside the agent’s workspace.
  • Use the agent’s documented ignore or deny-list controls for local configuration, credential directories, private keys, environment dumps and build logs.
  • Open only the files needed for a task; close credential-management consoles and sensitive editor tabs before starting an agent session.
  • Never ask an agent to print, summarize, decode or validate a secret value.
  • Review generated commands before execution, especially commands that upload files, run remote scripts, change IAM policy or alter deployment configuration.
  • Use a separate low-privilege development account for agent-assisted work.

Review MCP servers and tools

List every MCP server and connected tool available to the agent. Confirm its owner, requested permissions, data destinations, authentication method and logging behavior. Remove unused servers, prefer read-only operations, and require confirmation for writes, deployments, external messages and data exports. A server that can read a secret file or invoke a shell should be treated as part of the credential’s trust boundary.

OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance emphasizes excluding sensitive files, reviewing connected tools and limiting agent access. These controls remain necessary even when the repository has no committed secrets.

Detect accidental exposure before it becomes an incident

Scan locally and in CI

Use a secret scanner before commit, during CI and against repository history. Configure patterns for your providers and internal token formats, and test the scanner with harmless fixtures. A finding is not resolved by deleting the line from the latest commit: if the secret entered Git history, assume it may have been copied and rotate it.

Use repository push protection where available

Push protection can block recognized secrets before they are accepted by a repository. Availability and supported providers depend on repository configuration and plan conditions, so verify eligibility in your organization’s settings. Treat remote MCP scanning as an additional, ephemeral check: agent-invoked findings may not persist as repository alerts. Remediate the credential itself and clean the history when required; do not rely on a scan result as proof that the secret is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor use and spending

Set service-level usage alerts, budget controls and anomaly thresholds. Attribute traffic to a project, service or environment so an unexpected spike has an owner. Review authentication logs and API activity for new locations, unusual times, unfamiliar models, unexpected endpoints, permission changes or rapid spend. Monitoring cannot prevent every misuse, but it shortens the time between exposure and revocation.

What to do when an API key or credential may be leaked

Do not wait for confirmation if the credential could grant meaningful access. Treat the value as compromised and follow this order:

  1. Revoke or delete the credential immediately. Use the provider’s key-management or identity console. Disable associated tokens, sessions or integrations if necessary.
  2. Preserve incident details without copying the secret. Record where it appeared, when it was discovered, which repositories, logs, prompts, files or tools may contain it, and who owns the affected service.
  3. Inspect activity. Check usage, spend, authentication events, data access, configuration changes and deployment logs from the last known-safe time.
  4. Provision a replacement. Create a new credential with narrower scope, a different environment or project where appropriate, and an expiry or rotation plan.
  5. Deploy the replacement safely. Update the managed secret reference or workload identity, restart or roll out the service, and verify requests without printing the value.
  6. Remove residual copies. Clean commits and branches as required, delete cached artifacts and redact logs or transcripts. History cleanup does not remove the need to rotate.
  7. Contact the provider. Ask for assistance when unauthorized use, personal data exposure, account takeover or billing abuse is possible.
  8. Secure the account itself. If a human account may be compromised, change its password, end unfamiliar sessions, verify multifactor methods and follow the provider’s account-recovery process.

After containment, identify how the credential escaped and add a preventive control: a narrower scope, an exclusion rule, a scanner, push protection, a secret-store policy, a shorter lifetime or an approval step.

API keys are not teammate passwords

Never share one API key through chat, email, a ticket or a shared document. Shared keys erase individual accountability, make offboarding difficult and force a broad rotation when one person or device is exposed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For collaboration, create project-based credentials and give each teammate their own access. Keep environments separate so a developer cannot accidentally use production authority. Human sign-in passwords should remain personal, stored in an approved password manager and protected with multifactor authentication. An API key belongs to an application or workload; it should be scoped, monitored, rotated and revoked independently of any person’s password.

A layered implementation plan

  1. Inventory. Map files, variables, shell history, IDE context, agents, MCP servers, CI and deployment identities that can reach each secret.
  2. Separate. Create distinct credentials for people, projects, products and development stages.
  3. Scope. Remove unused permissions, prefer read-only access where possible, set expiry and use short-lived identity for supported workloads.
  4. Store. Use an approved local environment or OS credential store for development; use a managed secret store or workload identity in production.
  5. Shield agents. Exclude secret paths, avoid pasting values, review tools and require confirmation for high-impact actions.
  6. Scan. Add local and CI scanning, repository history checks and push protection where available.
  7. Monitor. Track usage, spend, authentication events and ownership, with alerts for anomalies.
  8. Rehearse. Test revocation, replacement, deployment, history cleanup and provider contact procedures without exposing the secret.

Common approaches that fail

  • “It is in an environment variable, so it is safe.” The variable may still be readable by the process, agent, CI job, crash report or deployment debug output. Control who can inherit it and use a managed store in production.
  • “The file is in .gitignore.” Git exclusion does not stop an agent, malware, backup tool or another local process from reading it.
  • “We deleted the leaked line.” A credential in commit history, a fork, cache or log should be considered exposed until revoked and replaced.
  • “The agent only has read access.” Read access can still expose credentials, personal data, source code and deployment configuration. Limit its readable paths as well as its write actions.
  • “A scanner found nothing.” Scanners have false negatives, unsupported formats and timing gaps. Combine scanning with least privilege, monitoring and rapid rotation.
  • “One team key is easier.” Convenience trades away attribution and makes every device and teammate part of one large trust boundary.
