How to Secure an X Account Against Phishing and Account Takeover

To reduce the risk of losing an X account, use a unique password for X and its associated email, enable a second sign-in check such as a passkey or authentication app, keep a recovery route available, and enter credentials only on the real x.com domain or in the official app. If the account starts behaving unexpectedly, secure the linked email, change the X password, revoke unfamiliar app access, and use X support if you cannot sign in.

How to strengthen your X sign-in

Use unique passwords for X and its recovery email

X recommends a strong password of at least 10 characters that is not reused on other sites. Apply the same rule to the email account connected to X: someone who controls that mailbox may be able to reset your X password. A password manager can help generate and store distinct passwords, but it does not replace account recovery planning.

X also recommends requiring both the account email address and phone number to initiate a password-reset link or code. These are protective steps, not a guarantee against account takeover. See X’s account-security guidance.

Choose an additional sign-in check

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a check after the password. X documents authentication apps, security keys and text messages as 2FA methods, and separately offers passkeys. Availability can depend on the account, device and location, so check the current settings shown for your account rather than assuming every option will appear.

Method What to consider
Passkey X says passkeys use the WebAuthn standard: a public/private key pair is created for the account, with the public key stored by X and the private key kept on the device. X says passkeys are available on iOS and Android and are encouraged, not mandatory. Consider how you will access the device and recover the account if it is lost. X passkey information.
Authentication app Generates sign-in codes in an app. Keep access to the app and its recovery options in mind if you replace or lose your phone. X documents this method in its 2FA guidance.
Security key A physical key used for sign-in. Check that the key and your devices are compatible, and plan for what you will use if the key is lost. X lists security keys as a 2FA method.
SMS X stopped supporting SMS 2FA for non-Premium subscribers effective March 20, 2023. For Premium subscribers, availability can vary by country and carrier; check the account’s current settings.

X’s documented settings route for 2FA is Settings and privacy > Security and account access > Security. Passkey setup is described under Security and account access > Security > Passkey. Labels and routes can change; follow the current in-app wording if it differs. Official setup details are in X’s 2FA help and passkey help.

Save a recovery route before you need it

When 2FA is enabled, X says a backup code can be generated in its iOS or Android app and on x.com. Store it somewhere private, separate from the device you normally use to sign in. X says the code can help if you lose your phone or change numbers. Do not send a backup code to anyone claiming to be support.

A backup code is different from a temporary password, which X describes as a way to log in to some third-party applications that require an X password. If you are logged out and have no active backup code, X directs you to contact support. Details are in X’s 2FA recovery guidance.

How to tell if an X login page is fake

A phishing page can look like X while being hosted on another site. Check the address bar’s actual domain—not just the link text, logo or page design—and go to x.com directly if you are unsure. Be especially cautious with unusual URLs sent by Direct Message, even when they appear to come from someone you know.

X Help states: “X will never ask you to provide your password via email, Direct Message, or reply.” X also says it will not ask you to download something or sign in on a non-X website. Its liveness checks are available only within the official app or, for QR checks, the X App Clip on iOS; X says it will not send a link to complete a liveness check by email, text or Direct Message. See X’s account-security tips and information about liveness checks.

Warning signs that someone else may control your account

Act promptly if you notice activity or account changes you did not authorize. X lists these as possible signs of compromise:

  • A password that no longer works.

An alert about a new device or suspicious login that you cannot recognize also deserves immediate attention. However, a temporary lock after too many failed login attempts does not by itself prove that anyone accessed the account; X documents temporary lockouts as a separate issue. Unexpected activity can sometimes stem from a third-party application bug, so investigate app access as well as sign-in security. See X’s compromised-account guidance and its help for temporary login lockouts.

What to do if your X account was hacked

  1. If you can still sign in, change the X password. Use a strong password you have not used elsewhere. A password change does not automatically sign out every X mobile app session, so continue with the access review.
  2. Secure the associated email account. Set a unique password there and check that only you can access it. If X emails you about an email-address change you did not make, its message may include a link to reverse the change. Confirm the message is genuine before using that link; do not follow an unexpected link just because it appears to be a recovery notice.
  3. Revoke unfamiliar third-party app access. Review the applications connected to X and remove ones you do not recognize or no longer use. If a trusted external app has your X password saved, update it there too; otherwise, repeated failed sign-ins may cause further lockouts.
  4. Remove unauthorized activity and check your devices. Delete unwanted posts, then scan computers for viruses or malware, particularly if suspicious activity continues after the password change. Install security updates for operating systems and apps.
  5. Contact X if you still cannot sign in. Try a password reset first. If access remains unavailable, submit an account-access request using the email associated with the account. X asks for your username and the date you last had access; the form may require a password reset as part of the process. Use the official hacked or compromised account form.

X identifies several possible routes to compromise: giving credentials or tokens to a malicious app or website, using a weak or reused password, password-stealing malware, or signing in over a compromised network. No single unusual post establishes which route was involved, so work through both account access and device security. See X’s recovery guidance and its page on authenticity and platform manipulation.
