First, block untrusted network access to the Grid. Then configure authentication, encrypted transport, and—where your topology uses Hub/Node registration—the shared registration secret. A password does not replace network isolation. Verify the controls against the Selenium version actually deployed before reopening access.
Why an exposed Grid is a security risk
Selenium warns that “Selenium Grid must be protected from external access using appropriate firewall permissions.” An exposed Grid can let outsiders use its infrastructure, reach internal web applications or files, or run custom binaries. Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands to remote browsers; in Grid 4, the Router is the request entry point and directs commands to the relevant component or the Node holding an existing session.
Grid authentication is not enabled by default, according to Selenium’s security guidance. The default Standalone RemoteWebDriver address is http://localhost:4444, but that default alone does not establish whether a running service is reachable from outside: bind addresses, published container ports, cloud rules, load balancers, and proxies all affect exposure.
Contain the exposure before changing settings
- Inventory every route to the service. Check the host listener and bind address, container port mappings, Kubernetes Services and Ingress, cloud security groups or firewalls, load balancers, and reverse proxies.
- Deny unsolicited external traffic. Allow only trusted test clients to reach the user-facing endpoint, and allow only required traffic between Grid components. Apply restrictions at the network boundary appropriate to your deployment.
- Do not publish internal component ports merely because components need them. Selenium’s distributed Grid examples identify Event Bus ports 4442, 4443, and 5557 and Session Queue port 5559, with the Router normally serving user-facing traffic on 4444. These are topology context, not a complete firewall recipe. Confirm the actual configuration and keep component communication internal where possible.
- Recheck alternate paths. A service or port mapping can restore public reachability even after a firewall change. Inspect each layer that can expose the endpoint.
There is no universal allowlist in Selenium’s documentation: required rules depend on whether the deployment is Standalone, Hub/Node, or fully distributed, and on its actual configuration.

Configure authentication, TLS, and registration controls
Enable Basic authentication
Selenium’s TOML configuration documentation shows username and password settings for the Router. The credential pair is required to load the Grid UI or start a new session. Configure credentials for the deployed mode using that version’s documentation; keep them in your secrets system rather than source code, public configuration, or logs.
Protect the client connection with HTTPS
The Selenium Server CLI reference lists --https-certificate and --https-private-key for HTTPS configuration. TLS can terminate in Selenium or at a trusted proxy, depending on the design. Ensure the client-to-entrypoint connection is encrypted; assess and protect the proxy-to-Grid connection according to your network threat model. Selenium’s options do not prescribe one universal proxy arrangement.
Authenticate Node registration when applicable
For Hub/Node or distributed deployments, the CLI reference describes --registration-secret as a shared secret for authenticating Node registration requests. Its value must match on the Hub/Distributor. Store it as a secret and restrict the registration and control paths to trusted components.

Check the deployed Selenium version
Run the security help from the exact server artifact in use:
java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar info security
Selenium says this output covers secure communication and Node registration. Its configuration-help page also notes that command-line help reflects the current implementation and is the most accurate place to confirm options when documentation may lag. Verify names, requirements, and supported controls there before rollout.
Version guidance matters. In a post dated July 31, 2024, Selenium described reports of crypto miners being started through session creation, said Grid has no authentication by default, and urged operators to upgrade because security items had been added since older versions. The post noted particular targeting effort against Grid 3.14. This is dated threat context—not evidence that upgrading alone fixes exposure. Restrict reachability and configure the controls relevant to your version as well.

At the research timestamp of October 3, 2026, Selenium’s downloads page listed stable Selenium Server 4.49.0, released September 9, 2026. Releases change; check the downloads page and compatibility before upgrading rather than treating that listing as current indefinitely.
Verify the new security boundary
- From an untrusted network, confirm the user-facing endpoint and management or component ports cannot be reached.
- From an authorized client, confirm the expected authentication challenge and TLS behavior.
- In a multi-component deployment, confirm required internal flows still work and Node registration uses the configured secret.
- Review cloud and network policy, service definitions, port mappings, and logs for accidental public ingress or exposed credentials.
Record the Grid mode, externally reachable hostname and port, proxy and container paths, authorized clients, required internal flows, TLS termination point, secret storage and rotation process, installed version, and the output of info security. That record makes later changes easier to assess without assuming every Grid has the same topology.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Grid is still reachable from outside
Look beyond the host firewall: inspect cloud security groups, load balancers, reverse proxies, Kubernetes Ingress or Services, and container port publishing. Confirm the listener’s bind address and test from a genuinely untrusted network.

Authorized clients cannot create sessions after hardening
Check that clients can reach the correct Router endpoint, supply the configured username and password, and can establish the required TLS connection. For distributed setups, confirm internal component connectivity without making those ports publicly reachable.
Nodes fail to register
For a topology using registration secrets, confirm the configured value matches on the Hub/Distributor and Nodes, and that the registration path is reachable between trusted components. Use the deployed version’s info security output to confirm option names and requirements.
A documented option is rejected or behaves differently
Do not assume settings are identical across releases. Run info security against the deployed JAR, check the matching Selenium documentation, and plan a compatible upgrade if necessary.

Does Selenium Grid have authentication enabled by default?
No. Selenium’s security guidance says authentication is absent by default; configure it for the deployed version and restrict network access.
Which ports should I allow through my firewall?
There is no universal rule set. Identify the user-facing endpoint and the component-to-component flows your topology actually needs; keep internal ports off public ingress.
