Before binding it to a network interface, set OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD, then choose the narrowest hostname that meets your use case. Add --cors origins only when a browser-based frontend requires them; CORS does not authenticate users or act as a firewall.
OpenCode documents HTTP Basic Authentication for the server, using opencode as the default username and allowing an override through OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAME. The documentation also warns that OpenCode Web is unsecured when OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD is unset. The procedure below separates local access, trusted-LAN access, and public exposure so you do not make a service reachable more broadly than intended.

Choose the exposure boundary before changing a setting
Security starts with deciding who must reach the process. A local editor, a second computer on your home network, and an Internet user require very different exposure decisions. Pick the smallest scope that satisfies the actual client list.
| Use case | Listening choice | Authentication | Browser origins | What remains to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Only the machine running OpenCode | 127.0.0.1, the documented default for serve and the default for opencode web |
Still useful if other local users or scripts could reach the process; mandatory before any later network binding | Usually none | Confirm no separate port-forwarding or tunnel exposes the loopback service |
| Trusted devices on a private LAN | A deliberately selected network-facing address; the documentation shows --hostname 0.0.0.0 for making the service reachable across interfaces |
Set OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD before startup; retain a strong, unique secret |
Only the origins used by the custom web frontend | Check that firewalls, router rules, VPNs, and cloud security groups do not widen reach beyond the intended LAN |
| Remote or public users | Network-facing binding only if required | HTTP Basic Authentication with a strong password and, if useful, a non-default username | Only explicitly required browser origins | The reviewed OpenCode pages do not provide a complete TLS-termination or reverse-proxy recipe, so transport protection and proxy controls require separate, current verification |
Binding to 0.0.0.0 means the process listens on all available network interfaces. It is a reachability decision, not an authentication method. If one interface or an SSH tunnel is sufficient, use that narrower arrangement instead of opening every interface.

What each OpenCode control actually protects
Hostname binding controls reachability
serve uses 127.0.0.1 by default, and opencode web starts on localhost by default. A loopback listener accepts connections from the same host but is not directly reachable from another device on the LAN. The --hostname option changes that boundary. The documented network-access example uses --hostname 0.0.0.0; use it only when a remote client needs to connect.
The password enables HTTP Basic Authentication
Set OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD for any instance that can be reached over a network. OpenCode’s Server documentation describes this as HTTP Basic Authentication, and its Web documentation says the server is unsecured when the variable is not set. The default username is opencode. A deployment can change it with OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAME, but changing the name does not compensate for a weak or reused password.
CORS governs browser origins, not network access
The server command accepts one or more --cors origins for additional browser origins. An origin is the combination of scheme, host, and port used by the frontend. Add only the exact origins your custom interface needs. A CORS allowlist affects whether browsers permit cross-origin requests; it does not stop a non-browser client from connecting, does not replace Basic Authentication, and does not prevent a listener from being reachable at the network layer.

attach is a client connection method
The CLI documents attach for connecting to a running backend and supports supplying username and password options. Use that feature to connect a deliberate client to a deliberately scoped server. It is not a justification for publishing the backend to every interface or for omitting authentication.
Secure an instance step by step
- List the clients and their locations. Write down whether the caller is the same machine, a particular LAN device, a VPN peer, or an Internet client. If you cannot identify a required remote caller, keep the service on loopback.
- Prepare a unique secret before starting the process. Use a long, randomly generated value stored in your password manager or deployment secret store. Do not paste it into screenshots, tickets, public logs, shell transcripts, or shared command history. Treat it as a credential for the server, not as a convenient test value.
- Set the password in the environment used to launch OpenCode. The variable must be present when the server starts. Setting it in a different terminal, or after the process is already running, does not secure that existing process. Also set
OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAMEonly when a non-default username helps your deployment; record the chosen value securely. - Choose the hostname deliberately. Leave the documented loopback default for local-only work. If another device must connect, use the documented hostname option and then inspect the host’s firewall and network path to ensure that the resulting listener is reachable only from the intended segment.
- Add browser origins only for a real frontend. If a custom web application runs from another origin, pass that origin through the server’s
--corsoption. Do not add broad wildcards merely to make a browser error disappear. If the client is a CLI or another server, CORS is normally irrelevant to that client. - Start the service with the controls in place. A documented configuration pattern for a private network service is:
OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD='<unique-secret>' opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096
This illustrates the documented environment variable and flags. It is not a tested deployment command and, by itself, does not provide encryption in transit or establish a safe public-Internet configuration. Adapt the shell syntax to the environment that launches your process, and make sure the secret is not written into a persistent unit file or a world-readable script.
- Record the effective configuration. Note the hostname, port, username choice, required browser origins, and the network locations that should be able to connect. Keep the password out of that note; store it in the secret system used by the operator.
- Test from the intended boundary. Try the web or CLI client from an allowed machine, confirm that authentication is required, and then test from a machine or network that should not have access. A successful local test alone does not prove that an unintended interface is closed.
Configuration patterns for common situations
Local-only development
Run opencode web or opencode serve without changing the hostname. The documented default is localhost, which keeps ordinary LAN devices from reaching the port directly. If several people share the operating system account or local malware is part of your threat model, set the password anyway and keep the process permissions restricted. Do not assume that loopback makes a compromised host safe; it only narrows the network boundary.

Trusted private LAN
Set the password in the launching environment and use the documented network-facing hostname option. The example above uses 0.0.0.0 and port 4096; those values illustrate the documented pattern rather than a universal requirement. Check the host firewall and the network’s segmentation separately. A home or office label such as “private” is not proof that every device is trusted.
Custom browser frontend
Keep authentication enabled, identify the frontend’s exact scheme, host, and port, and add only that origin with --cors. If the frontend moves between development and production origins, treat each as a separate allowlist entry and remove entries that are no longer used. A browser CORS error can be fixed by correcting the origin configuration; disabling authentication or opening every origin is not an equivalent fix.
Windows Subsystem for Linux
The OpenCode WSL guidance shows a network-facing server command and explicitly requires setting OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD when using --hostname 0.0.0.0. Apply the same order on WSL: establish the secret first, bind only as broadly as necessary, and check how Windows firewall rules, WSL networking, and any forwarded ports affect reachability. The WSL command demonstrates the product settings; it does not remove the need to inspect the surrounding Windows network boundary.

A remote CLI client
Use the documented attach command against the specific backend address and provide the username and password options supported by your installed CLI. Keep the backend scoped to the network path that the client actually uses. If the client is on a VPN or through a controlled tunnel, do not broaden the listener simply because the tunnel already exists; verify which interface receives the connection.
Verify the result instead of trusting the command line
Check local behavior
From the server host, connect with the intended OpenCode client. Confirm that the process is listening on the expected port and that the client can authenticate with the configured username and password. If you changed the username, test the new value rather than relying on the default.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check the intended remote path
From an allowed LAN or VPN device, use the actual web or CLI client. A connection that succeeds proves only that this path works; it does not show that the listener is restricted to that path. Record the source network and the interface used for the test.
Best Value
Check an unintended path
From a device or network that should not reach the service, verify that the connection is blocked by the host firewall, network policy, routing boundary, or absence of a listener. Test more than one interface when the machine has Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN, container, or virtual-machine adapters. If any unexpected path succeeds, return to the hostname and firewall configuration before continuing.
Check authentication independently of reachability
A reachable port is not the same as an authorized session. Try an incorrect password in a controlled test and confirm that the client is not admitted. Then verify that the real credentials are not present in browser URLs, screenshots, shell history, CI logs, or process-management output visible to other users.
Check browser-origin behavior
Load the custom frontend from each origin that should work and from one origin that should not. A rejected origin demonstrates that the browser policy is narrower than an unrestricted allowlist; it does not demonstrate that the network port is hidden. Test the CLI separately because it is not governed by browser CORS.
Troubleshoot the failure without weakening security
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safer corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing can connect remotely | The server is still bound to loopback, the hostname option was not applied to the running process, or a firewall blocks the path | Confirm the effective startup command and listener, then allow only the intended source network through the host and network firewalls |
| Local access works but a LAN client fails | The process listens only on 127.0.0.1, or routing/firewall policy does not permit the LAN path |
Use the documented network-facing hostname only if required, and inspect firewall and routing rules rather than adding a broad CORS entry |
| The client receives an authentication failure | The password is missing, wrong, or paired with the wrong username; the default is opencode unless overridden |
Restart with the intended environment variables, verify the username choice, and replace a compromised secret instead of disabling authentication |
| The browser reports a CORS error | The frontend’s exact origin was not supplied, or the request is coming from a different scheme, host, or port | Add only the required origin through --cors; do not treat CORS as a substitute for login protection |
| A secret appears in logs or history | The password was embedded in a command, script, screenshot, or diagnostic output | Rotate the secret, remove exposed copies where possible, and use the runtime’s protected secret mechanism for future launches |
| The service is reachable from an unexpected interface | 0.0.0.0 listens across interfaces, or a port-forwarding, VPN, container, or cloud rule widened access |
Narrow the binding or firewall rule, remove unnecessary forwarding, and retest from both allowed and disallowed networks |
Public Internet exposure needs controls beyond these pages
The documented OpenCode controls establish listener binding, HTTP Basic Authentication, username configuration, and browser-origin handling. The reviewed pages do not settle how to terminate TLS, configure a reverse proxy, enforce proxy-level request limits, or publish a production-ready Internet endpoint. Do not describe a server bound to 0.0.0.0 with a password as a complete public deployment.
Before placing an instance on the public Internet, obtain current, version-specific guidance for encrypted transport and the proxy or gateway in front of OpenCode. Confirm how that layer forwards authentication, preserves the intended client address, limits exposure, handles certificates, and blocks direct access to the backend. If those controls have not been separately verified, keep OpenCode on a private network or behind a controlled tunnel instead.
Operational practices that keep the configuration secure
- Use a different password for every OpenCode deployment; never reuse a personal account password.
- Change the secret immediately if it appears in a public issue, shared log, screenshot, shell history, or unauthorized process listing.
- Keep the default username when it is harmless and operationally convenient; change it only when your deployment benefits from doing so, and document the change securely.
- Review the
--corslist whenever a frontend is retired, renamed, moved to a new port, or split into development and production environments. - Audit host firewall rules, router forwards, VPN routes, container bridges, and cloud security groups after changing the hostname.
- Run the process with the least operating-system privilege needed for its work, and protect any file or service definition that contains environment configuration.
- Recheck command-line flags and environment-variable behavior against the OpenCode documentation for the version you install. The reviewed pages do not state a publication date or an OpenCode version, so labels and behavior may change.
- Keep a written record of the intended network boundary and repeat the allowed-versus-disallowed connectivity test after upgrades or infrastructure changes.
The safe default
For a local workflow, leave OpenCode on its documented loopback default. For a private network, set OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD before startup, bind to a network-facing hostname only when necessary, and allow only the browser origins that a real frontend uses. Treat public Internet access as a separate deployment problem: the OpenCode pages establish the application-level controls, but they do not by themselves provide a verified TLS and reverse-proxy design.
