Use the same evidence-based security process for every report and pull request, regardless of whether a person or an AI system helped write it. Require private intake for suspected vulnerabilities, verify affected versions and reproduction steps, assess concrete confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact, and keep a human accountable for every decision and merge. AI authorship is not proof that a report is malicious, and polished prose is not proof that it is correct.
The practical defense is a published workflow: a prominent SECURITY.md, a confidential reporting route, named maintainers with limited access, explicit evidence requirements, independent patch review, and coordinated disclosure. The process below adapts OpenSSF, CNCF, and GitHub guidance to projects of different sizes.

Start with an evidence-first security posture
AI-assisted scanners and chat tools can produce useful leads, but they can also generate duplicate, incorrect, verbose, or exaggerated findings. Treat each submission as an unverified claim. The question is not “Does this look AI-generated?” but “Can the described behavior be reproduced in a supported version, and does it create a security consequence?”
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe OpenSSF and CNCF guide states that “Fixes are more important than findings. Full stop.” That principle keeps triage focused on reducing risk for users rather than debating the origin or quality of the text. AI can help a reporter discover a behavior or draft a patch; neither contribution substitutes for maintainer verification.

Do not make AI detection a gate. The OpenSSF Vulnerability Disclosures Working Group describes AI-content detection as imperfect and notes that there is no reliable technical indicator for authorship. A detector can misclassify human writing, miss generated text, and distract reviewers from the actual vulnerability. See the working-group discussion at the AI-SLOP issue.
OpenSSF and CNCF also caution that “Everyone is at different stages of their AI journeys.” Your policy can therefore be strict about accountability while remaining neutral about tools. Define what a contributor must explain, test, and own; do not try to infer intent from sentence style.
Publish the intake process before a report arrives
Make SECURITY.md easy to find
Put a security-reporting section in SECURITY.md and link it from the README or another prominent project page. The OpenSSF maintainer guide recommends a clear policy so a reporter does not have to guess where sensitive details belong.
State the supported versions or branches, the private contact or platform feature to use, what information a first report should contain, how acknowledgment works, and how updates will be communicated. Explain whether the project accepts reports only for released versions, whether a security contact is monitored by a small team, and what happens when a submission is an ordinary bug or hardening suggestion. Be precise about capacity: publish a response target only if maintainers can consistently meet it.
A useful policy tells reporters to include the affected version, environment, prerequisites, exact reproduction steps, expected and observed behavior, and the security impact they believe results. It should also ask them not to post exploit details in a public issue or commit.
Use a private reporting route
For a public GitHub repository, owners and administrators can enable private vulnerability reporting. A report can then be handled as a draft repository advisory while maintainers and the reporter discuss evidence and a fix. GitHub documents the feature and its coordinated-disclosure flow at GitHub’s coordinated disclosure documentation.
If private reporting is not enabled, GitHub’s documented fallback is to ask the reporter to request a security contact without putting vulnerability details in a public issue. Make that instruction prominent in the README and issue templates. Platform capabilities differ, so describe the route your project actually monitors rather than promising a feature available only on one host.
Limit access and assign responsibility
Name the maintainers responsible for receiving and triaging reports. A small project can use its existing maintainers as the vulnerability-management group; a larger project can designate a smaller trusted team. Keep access to the report limited to people who need it while the issue is being resolved. Decide who can acknowledge a report, who can approve a patch, who can publish an advisory, and who communicates with downstream users.

Use one primary intake path. Multiple unmonitored inboxes, issue forms, and chat channels make it easy to lose a report or expose details. If you retain a secondary route for emergencies, explain when it should be used and who watches it.
State the project’s AI-assisted contribution policy
Before receiving AI-assisted pull requests, publish the project’s expectations. You may request disclosure of substantial AI assistance, prohibit autonomous agents from opening pull requests or pushing commits, or allow those actions only when a human sponsor accepts responsibility. These are policy choices discussed by the OpenSSF working group, not a universal standard.
Whatever option you choose, require a human submitter to understand and explain the change, its threat model, and its tests. Apply the same review and testing bar to code written entirely by a person, drafted with an assistant, or produced by an agent. Explain whether generated files, dependency updates, and security findings need special review.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Run a consistent triage sequence
Use the following sequence for every potential vulnerability. Record decisions in the private case, not in a public issue, until disclosure is safe.
- Acknowledge receipt. Confirm that the message reached the right team without agreeing that it is a vulnerability. The OpenSSF guide gives “within 1-2 days” as an example acknowledgment target; adapt it to your staffing and publish only a target you can meet.
- Move the conversation to the private channel. If details arrived publicly, ask the reporter to remove sensitive information where possible and continue through the documented private route. Do not copy exploit instructions into a public tracker.
- Request reproducible evidence. Ask for exact steps, affected versions, configuration, prerequisites, expected behavior, observed behavior, and any proof of concept. Request a minimal reproduction that does not require sharing unnecessary secrets or personal data.
- Establish the affected scope. Test the claimed behavior against supported releases and relevant configurations. Check whether a recent commit already fixed it, whether only an unreleased branch is affected, and whether the behavior depends on an optional component.
- Assess security impact. Determine what an attacker can access or change and under which conditions. Consider confidentiality, integrity, and availability, along with authentication requirements, network position, user interaction, and privilege boundaries. Treat a severity score supplied by a reporter or an AI tool as an input to examine, not a conclusion.
- Check for duplicates. Search private reports, existing issues, commits, and release notes for the same root cause. The OpenSSF/CNCF guide identifies duplicate reports as a growing triage burden as AI-assisted scanning scales. Link related cases internally and avoid asking multiple reporters to repeat the same work.
- Classify the result. Mark the case as a confirmed vulnerability, ordinary bug, intended behavior, hardening suggestion, duplicate, or not reproducible. A report that appears AI-written is not thereby false. Explain the technical reason for the classification and route non-security work to the normal issue process.
- Choose the next action. For a valid issue, assign an owner, develop and test a fix privately, and plan release communication. For an incomplete report, identify the missing evidence and give the reporter a clear question. For an invalid or duplicate report, close it respectfully with an explanation that does not reveal sensitive details.
What to request in the first substantive reply
- Project version, commit, package release, or distribution build tested.
- Operating system, runtime, compiler, database, network, and feature configuration that affect the result.
- Prerequisites such as an account, role, token, local access, crafted input, or a particular deployment mode.
- Commands or a short script that reproduces the behavior, plus the expected and observed output.
- The attacker capability and concrete consequence: data read, data altered, code executed, service disrupted, or boundary bypassed.
- Whether the reporter knows of an existing issue, public exploit, or downstream product affected by the same behavior.
Ask only for information needed to validate the claim. Sensitive credentials, customer data, and live exploit targets should never be requested through an insecure channel.
Evaluate impact instead of prose style
Separate a security boundary from a normal defect
A crash is a security issue when an attacker can reliably trigger meaningful availability loss or use it to cross a trust boundary; it is an ordinary bug when it has no security consequence under supported conditions. A missing hardening option may be worthwhile without being a vulnerability. An unexpected result can be intentional behavior if it matches the documented threat model.
Write down the boundary that is crossed, the attacker’s required access, and the resulting harm. This makes the decision auditable and prevents an impressive narrative from receiving more attention than a terse but reproducible report.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify the reporter’s claim, not just the supplied score
Reproduce the behavior in an isolated environment. Compare a known-good version with an affected version, test the stated prerequisites, and vary one condition at a time. If reproduction fails, ask whether the reporter used a fork, distribution patch, unsupported configuration, or a different dependency version. Do not close a case solely because an AI-generated proof of concept is long, repetitive, or badly formatted.

Conversely, do not accept a claim solely because an AI tool labels it critical. A score cannot establish exploitability, affected versions, or real-world impact. Your own test and threat assessment must support the classification.
Handle duplicates without punishing good-faith reports
AI-assisted scanners may discover the same underlying flaw repeatedly. Compare the root cause, affected code path, and version range rather than matching wording. Consolidate duplicate reports privately, credit useful evidence where appropriate, and tell later reporters that the issue is already tracked without disclosing details before the fix is ready.
Keep proof of concept and remediation work private
A privately shared proof of concept can make triage concrete, but it is not proof that the entire report is correct. Re-run it yourself, minimize it, and remove secrets before storing or forwarding it. Restrict repository permissions and avoid copying exploit code into public tests until disclosure is coordinated.
Proposed patches and regression tests are valuable starting points. Review them as untrusted contributions: inspect the diff, reproduce the original failure, confirm that the patch closes the relevant path, and test for regressions and bypasses. A reporter’s patch does not replace maintainer verification. The OpenSSF/CNCF guide’s emphasis that fixes matter more than findings means the goal is a safe, supportable release, not merely acceptance of a plausible diff.
Ask the reporter whether they want to help test or review a fix, but do not make cooperation a condition of handling the report. Continue privately while the patch is developed and tested. If the reporter’s artifact contains a working exploit, limit circulation to people who need it and plan how to delete or archive it safely after remediation.
Apply human accountability to AI-assisted pull requests
Require an accountable explanation
Require the human author or sponsor to explain what changed, why the change is safe, the threat model it addresses, and which tests were run. “The model said it was secure” is not an explanation. A maintainer should be able to ask follow-up questions and receive technically coherent answers before approval.
Review the diff for common AI failure modes
| Review area | Questions for the reviewer |
|---|---|
| Scope | Does the diff change only what the issue requires, or did generated code introduce unrelated refactoring? |
| Dependencies | Were packages added, upgraded, or replaced? Are licenses, provenance, version constraints, and transitive behavior understood? |
| Generated files | Are lockfiles, schemas, client code, documentation, and build artifacts expected and reproducible? |
| Security defaults | Did the patch weaken authentication, authorization, validation, encryption, logging, sandboxing, or error handling? |
| Secrets and data | Could the change expose tokens, credentials, personal data, prompts, logs, or test fixtures? |
| Assumptions | Does the code rely on an input format, platform behavior, race-free execution, or failure mode that tests do not establish? |
| Tests | Does a regression test fail before the fix, pass after it, and cover negative and boundary cases? |
Run the project’s normal linters, unit tests, integration tests, static analysis, packaging checks, and security checks. Add a focused regression test when the change fixes a security defect. Reviewers should inspect both the implementation and the tests; generated tests can encode the same mistaken assumption as generated production code.

Keep the ordinary quality bar
Do not create a lower bar for AI-assisted changes or a punitive bar based on suspected authorship. Require the same maintainability, documentation, compatibility, and review approvals as any other contribution. If the project requests AI disclosure, use it to understand how the change was produced and what verification occurred, not as a substitute for technical review.

Define boundaries for autonomous agents
Decide in advance whether an agent may open a pull request, push commits to an existing branch, comment on a security report, or submit a vulnerability finding. Record the decision in contribution guidelines and enforce it consistently across contributors.
| Policy choice | When it can fit | Control to require |
|---|---|---|
| Human-only submission | Small teams with limited review capacity or sensitive code | Every change and report comes from a named human who accepts responsibility |
| Agent may draft, human submits | Projects that want automation while preserving a clear accountability point | Human author reviews the complete diff, explains it, and runs required tests |
| Agent may open a PR under sponsorship | Teams with automation infrastructure and enough reviewers to handle volume | A named sponsor owns the branch, limits permissions, and prevents automatic merge |
| Agent may push commits | Only where branch protections and audit logs are mature | Required reviews, status checks, least-privilege tokens, and an explicit rollback path |
These options are not mutually exclusive: a project can permit agents to draft code while forbidding autonomous security reports or direct pushes to protected branches. State exceptions for emergency response separately, and make sure emergency access is logged and reviewed afterward.

Build a release plan around user risk
Once a vulnerability is confirmed, agree a reasonable timeline with the reporter. The timing should reflect exploitability, patch complexity, affected users, and the ability of downstream providers to prepare. Do not promise a fixed deadline unless your project has adopted and staffed one.

- Develop the patch in a private branch or draft advisory.
- Reproduce the original behavior and add regression coverage.
- Test supported versions, upgrade paths, and compatibility with downstream packaging.
- Prepare release notes and an advisory that identify affected versions, fixed versions, severity rationale, workarounds where real, and the remediation action users should take.
- Coordinate publication with the reporter and any downstream providers that genuinely need preparation time.
- Release the fix and advisory together when practical, then monitor questions, regressions, and follow-up reports.
GitHub’s draft repository advisory workflow is designed for private discussion and coordinated publication; consult the platform documentation for the repository controls and publishing steps.
Choose between normal coordination and an embargo
| Approach | Advantages | Costs and risks | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard coordinated disclosure | Fewer people hold sensitive details; simpler administration; faster for straightforward patches | Downstream distributors may have little preparation time | The fix is manageable and providers can update when the advisory publishes |
| Embargoed downstream notification | Selected providers can prepare patched packages before public disclosure | More coordination, more people who could leak details, and additional volunteer workload | Exploitability or patch complexity makes synchronized downstream work important and the project can manage confidentiality |
An embargo is not automatically safer. Use it only when the benefit to affected users exceeds the administration and leak risk. Limit the recipient list, document the date and information shared, and avoid giving providers more exploit detail than they need to prepare.
Make the advisory actionable
Users need to know whether their version is affected, which release contains the fix, whether a configuration change is temporary, and how to verify remediation. Explain uncertainty honestly: if only a particular deployment mode is affected, say so; if the project cannot establish an exploit path, do not imply one. Update the advisory if later testing changes the affected range or remediation advice.
Match governance to project capacity
The OpenSSF and CNCF guide says a developer may spend “1-8 hours” reviewing and evaluating a vulnerability report. The guide does not provide a sampling method or population for that figure, so treat it as a planning reference rather than a universal average. A burst of AI-generated submissions can consume substantial maintainer time even when most findings are duplicates or non-security bugs.
| Operating model | Strengths | Risks | Safeguards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small maintainer group | Direct project knowledge and fewer handoffs | Limited availability, single-person dependency, and burnout | Shared private mailbox or platform access, documented backup owner, and a short triage checklist |
| Dedicated security team | Specialized expertise, continuity, and clearer separation of duties | Distance from implementation details and more coordination | Named liaison to maintainers, least-privilege access, and a formal handoff for patches and releases |
| Hybrid model | Security specialists handle intake while maintainers own code and release decisions | Ambiguous ownership if escalation rules are missing | Written severity, escalation, communication, and approval responsibilities |
Track queue age, time to acknowledgment, percentage of reports missing reproduction data, duplicate rate, time to validated classification, and time from confirmation to release. These measures reveal whether your intake instructions and staffing are working; they are not a way to rank reporters or infer AI use.
Best Value
Use a maintainer checklist for every case
- The report arrived through a private route or was moved there before sensitive details were discussed.
- A maintainer acknowledged receipt without declaring validity prematurely.
- Affected versions, configurations, prerequisites, reproduction steps, and expected versus observed behavior are recorded.
- Security impact is described in terms of confidentiality, integrity, availability, access, and attacker conditions.
- Duplicates and existing fixes were checked.
- The classification and rationale are documented.
- Proofs of concept, logs, and personal data are access-controlled.
- The patch and regression test were independently reviewed and run against the affected versions.
- A human owner is accountable for each pull request, report, and release decision.
- The disclosure date, advisory contents, downstream notifications, and remediation instructions are coordinated.
For pull requests, add a short contributor checklist requiring a plain-language change explanation, threat-model notes where relevant, test commands and results, dependency justification, and confirmation that generated code was reviewed. Keep the checklist small enough that reviewers will use it, and enforce it with branch protections where the project has that capability.
Fix common process failures
A report is posted in a public issue
Ask the reporter to stop sharing exploit details publicly and move the conversation to the private channel. Preserve only the minimum public text needed to explain that security details are being handled privately. Rotate any credentials or personal data that may have been exposed.
A detector labels the author as AI-generated
Ignore the label for validity decisions. Request the same reproduction and impact evidence you would request from any reporter. If the evidence is insufficient, close or defer the case for that reason, not because of writing style.
An AI-generated patch passes tests but changes too much
Reduce the patch to the smallest reviewable change, investigate every dependency and generated file, and add a regression test tied to the original failure. Passing the existing suite does not prove that untested security assumptions are safe.
The report includes a severity score but no exploit path
Ask what an attacker can do, under which prerequisites, and which versions are affected. Recalculate or qualify severity after independent testing. A supplied score is not evidence of impact by itself.
Maintainers cannot reproduce the issue
Confirm the exact commit, build, configuration, and environment. Test the reporter’s minimal case in an isolated setup and ask for clarification about hidden prerequisites. If the behavior remains unconfirmed, record the limitation and avoid calling the report fraudulent or “AI slop.”
The project cannot meet a proposed disclosure date
Tell the reporter promptly, explain the constraint, and renegotiate a date that accounts for patch quality and downstream risk. Do not publish an untested fix merely to satisfy an arbitrary deadline.
