How to Secure AhsayCBS with Restricted Access, MFA, and Network Controls

Secure AhsayCBS as a layered access problem: expose only the web ports your deployment needs, restrict the management console to known administrator addresses, enable the built-in runtime protections, require MFA over trusted HTTPS, and apply separate API filters that still accommodate backup clients. Ahsay’s documentation uses different defaults and procedures across versions 9 and 10, so verify every label and port against the release you operate before applying a change.

What to verify before changing anything

The guidance below combines Ahsay’s version 9 network and firewall instructions with version 10 runtime, API and 2FA documentation. The recovery article for lost MFA access covers AhsayCBS 8.3.0.30 and later. These are not interchangeable version statements.

Map every required network flow first

Firewall tightening is safest when you begin with a flow inventory rather than a port list. Record the source, destination, direction, protocol and business purpose for each connection:

  • Backup, restore and Run Direct data paths.
  • Replication between Ahsay systems, including any legacy replication receiver.
  • NFS storage access and the port-mapper dependency.
  • SMTP delivery for system or alert mail.
  • Outbound 2FA push-notification communication.
  • License checks and other vendor-required outbound connections.

Ahsay’s network guidance recommends a static server IP for stable license checking and backup or replication service. It also recommends exposing only TCP ports 80 and 443 publicly. Treat that as a perimeter baseline, not permission to remove every other rule: a feature that is actually enabled may require a narrowly scoped exception.

Port or path Where it appears in Ahsay guidance How to handle it
TCP 80 and 443 Recommended public web exposure Publish only the ports required for your chosen HTTP/HTTPS service and redirect or disable clear-text access where your release supports it.
SMTP port 25 Version 9 setup guidance Allow only if this server sends mail through that path; limit the destination to the approved mail service.
Port mapper 111 Version 9 feature guidance Conditional on the storage or NFS design; do not expose it broadly to the Internet.
Mount port 1058 Run Direct guidance Open only for the documented Run Direct path and only between the required hosts or networks.
NFS port 2049 NFS guidance Permit only to the storage endpoints that need it, with network-level restrictions.
Incoming TCP ports for legacy replication receivers Version 9 replication guidance Identify the exact receiver and source addresses before creating an inbound rule; this is not a universal Ahsay port requirement.

Write the intended rules down and obtain a rollback method before applying them. A firewall change that preserves console access but breaks replication or client restores is not a successful hardening change.

Apply the perimeter firewall baseline

  1. Separate public and private paths. Put the management console behind a VPN, administrative network or other trusted path when practical. If administrators must connect from the Internet, restrict the source addresses at both the firewall and AhsayCBS.
  2. Start with 80 and 443. Follow Ahsay’s recommendation to expose only TCP 80 and 443 publicly, then add feature-specific rules after confirming the flow inventory.
  3. Constrain every exception. Use the smallest source and destination ranges, the required direction, and the required protocol. A port needed for an internal NFS server should not become an Internet-wide allow rule.
  4. Test from each role. Verify an administrator login, a client backup, a restore, Run Direct if enabled, replication, NFS access and alert mail. Test both allowed and denied source networks.
  5. Log and review. Keep firewall logs for denied connections during the change window. They help distinguish a missing feature rule from an accidental public exposure.

Outbound 2FA notification traffic is a separate requirement. For version 10 push notifications, Ahsay documents outbound access to pns.ahsay.com on port 80 or 443, as applicable to the configured method. Permit that destination deliberately rather than opening unrestricted outbound web access.

Restrict the AhsayCBS management console by IP

Use the console’s own allowlist in addition to the perimeter firewall. In current Ahsay documentation, the path is System Settings > Advanced > Runtime Options > IP Allowed. Add the specific administrator address or the smallest administrative range that must reach the web console.

  • Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.

The version 10 Runtime Options page documents no console IP restriction by default. In other words, a newly installed or unreviewed instance may accept console connections from any source that reaches the service. Treat the allowlist as an explicit configuration task, not an assumed default.

Safe change procedure

  1. Determine the public or VPN egress address that AhsayCBS will see. Do not use an employee’s private workstation address if traffic is translated by a gateway.
  2. Open System Settings > Advanced > Runtime Options and locate IP Allowed. Confirm the exact field format in your release before entering a single address, subnet or range.
  3. Keep an existing administrator session open while you stage the change, but do not rely on that session as proof that a new connection will work.
  4. Add the approved management address or range, save the setting, then open a fresh browser session from the allowed network.
  5. Test a fresh connection from a deliberately unallowed network. Record the result and the timestamp.
  6. Document who can change the list and where the break-glass instructions are stored.

Do not place client subnets in this console allowlist merely because clients need API access. Console access and API access are separate controls; mixing them creates a larger management surface than necessary.

Prepare for an allowlist lockout

A typo, changed ISP address or VPN failure can block every administrator. Before saving an IP restriction, maintain a separate recovery route such as console access from the server network, an approved maintenance window, or a documented local operator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ahsay’s 2025 recovery guidance describes manually amending cbs.json in the installation’s conf directory and restarting the service when an administrator has blocked their own address. Treat this as a vendor-documented break-glass procedure, not a routine operating method:

  • Confirm the installed version and platform first; the file location, service name or restart command can vary.
  • Use an authenticated host-level account and protect the configuration file from unauthorized reading or modification.
  • Back up the file before editing and make the smallest possible change.
  • Restart only through the supported service procedure, then test the console from an approved address.
  • Remove temporary broad access immediately after recovery and record the incident.

Keep the recovery instructions offline or in a separately protected system so that a console outage does not also remove access to the instructions.

Turn on the runtime protections deliberately

Review the Runtime Options for three additional controls: prevent session hijacking, DDoS protection and restrict application hostname. The version 10 documentation says all three are disabled by default. Enable them only after checking how your reverse proxy, DNS names, load balancer and client integrations present requests.

  • Prevent session hijacking: Validate that legitimate administrators retain stable sessions when moving between approved proxies or addresses. Unexpected source-address changes can look like hijacking in some network designs.
  • DDoS protection: Ahsay documents that malicious IPs are blocked for five minutes. Monitor whether shared carrier NAT, corporate proxies or a client gateway is being classified incorrectly.
  • Restrict application hostname: Define the hostnames that should serve the application and check every legitimate DNS name, reverse-proxy route and certificate name before enforcement.

“By default the maximum Java heap size is 2048MB, there are no restrictions on IP address access to AhsayCBS web console, the prevent session hijacking, DDoS protection, and restrict application hostname are disabled.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2048 MB heap value in that statement is a runtime configuration detail, not a security recommendation or a capacity benchmark. Do not change it as part of access hardening unless you have a separate memory-management reason.

Require MFA over trusted HTTPS

Enable AhsayCBS two-factor authentication for administrator and other high-impact accounts, and install a certificate trusted by the connecting clients before treating HTTPS as complete. Ahsay states that a trusted certificate is required for 2FA over HTTPS. Its administrator guidance warns that without a trusted certificate, 2FA may require HTTP, which affects AhsayOBM and AhsayACB users whose accounts use 2FA.

Implementation sequence

  1. Install a certificate whose name matches the hostname administrators and clients actually use, and ensure the issuing CA is trusted by those devices.
  2. Test the console over HTTPS from an administrator workstation and from a client-management workstation.
  3. Enable 2FA for the intended accounts according to the installed release’s administrator guide.
  4. Register the required authenticator or push method and complete a login test with a fresh browser session.
  5. For version 10 push notifications, allow outbound TCP 80 or 443 to pns.ahsay.com as required by the selected method.
  6. Test a second account, a failed code or denied prompt, and the documented recovery path before enforcing MFA for every operator.

Do not describe an untrusted, self-signed certificate as equivalent to a trusted HTTPS deployment. It may encrypt a connection, but it does not satisfy the trust requirement Ahsay documents for 2FA behavior.

Filter APIs without breaking backup clients

Console allowlisting does not protect every API endpoint. Ahsay’s version 10 API documentation says API requests are allowed from all IP addresses by default and recommends adding IP filters.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The critical exception is /obs/apit/json/, which AhsayOBM and AhsayACB client agents use. Ahsay states that this endpoint cannot be fully restricted. Your filter design therefore needs to include every legitimate client subnet, site-to-site VPN range or service network that must reach it.

Safer API change sequence

  1. Export or record the current API filter configuration and identify every client network that sends requests.
  2. Classify endpoints by role: administrative automation, reseller or user operations, and client-agent traffic.
  3. Add the narrowest source ranges supported by the release, explicitly including legitimate client subnets for the /obs path.
  4. Test a backup, restore, account operation and any integration that uses the API.
  5. Review denied-request logs for a complete client cycle, including a scheduled job that runs outside business hours.
  6. Keep a rollback copy and a server-side recovery route before removing the default broad access.

Do not assume that a successful console test proves API health. A browser can work while an agent’s subnet is denied, or an agent can work while an administrative automation address remains unrestricted.

Choose the right access pattern

Decision factor Narrow administrator allowlist Broader client-facing access
Exposure reduction Strongest for the management console when source addresses are known. More reachable surface; depends on firewall, HTTPS, MFA and API filtering.
Address stability Works best with static office, VPN or bastion egress addresses. More tolerant of distributed or changing client networks.
Client/API requirements Keep client ranges out of the console list and handle them with API rules. Requires an explicit inventory of every legitimate client subnet, especially for /obs/apit/json/.
Lockout risk Higher if an ISP, VPN or administrator address changes. Lower for console availability, but broader exposure increases the importance of MFA and monitoring.
Operational dependencies Still requires feature-specific rules for replication, NFS, Run Direct, SMTP and notifications. Same dependencies, with additional attention to client-facing paths.

For most operator-managed deployments, the practical target is a narrow console allowlist combined with separately scoped client and API paths. A distributed reseller environment may need broader client ranges, but that does not require broad administrator access.

Validate the change and keep it reversible

Use a staged window and test each control independently. A useful order is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the current firewall, Runtime Options, 2FA and API settings.
  2. Confirm the break-glass operator and recovery files are available.
  3. Install and validate trusted HTTPS.
  4. Apply firewall restrictions and test all documented feature flows.
  5. Set the console IP allowlist and verify allowed and denied networks.
  6. Enable runtime protections one at a time, watching logs after each change.
  7. Enable MFA and test both normal and recovery scenarios.
  8. Apply API filters with client jobs running, then review logs through a complete backup cycle.

Monitor for symptoms rather than assuming a rule worked: administrators unexpectedly challenged or denied, clients unable to authenticate, missing push prompts, failed replication, Run Direct mount errors, NFS timeouts, absent mail, or repeated requests from an unrecognized source. Roll back only the control responsible, preserve logs, and correct the source or destination scope before trying again.

Operational checklist

  • Static server IP and documented DNS names are recorded.
  • Public exposure is limited to TCP 80 and 443 unless a documented feature requires another path.
  • SMTP, port mapper 111, Run Direct mount port 1058, NFS 2049 and legacy replication ports are treated as conditional, scoped exceptions.
  • The console allowlist at System Settings > Advanced > Runtime Options > IP Allowed contains only approved administrator networks.
  • Session-hijacking prevention, DDoS protection and hostname restriction have an explicit enabled or disabled decision, with testing notes.
  • Trusted HTTPS is validated by every relevant client and administrator workstation.
  • 2FA is enabled for high-impact accounts, with outbound access to pns.ahsay.com permitted for version 10 push notifications where required.
  • API filters have been reviewed separately from console restrictions, and legitimate /obs/apit/json/ client subnets remain reachable.
  • Lost-phone, expired-Twilio and console-lockout recovery procedures match the installed version and are accessible during an outage.
  • Configuration backups, rollback steps and test results are stored with the change record.

The Bottom Line

Use defense in depth: minimize public ports, allowlist the console, enable the relevant Runtime Options, enforce MFA only with trusted HTTPS, and filter APIs without excluding legitimate client-agent subnets. Because Ahsay’s defaults and recovery steps vary by release, confirm the installed version before saving each change and keep a tested break-glass route.
