Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe most effective defense is a service-account program, not a single setting: inventory every SPN-bearing identity, replace reusable user passwords with sMSAs or gMSAs where applications support them, remove unnecessary privilege, restrict which hosts can retrieve managed credentials, eliminate avoidable RC4 dependencies, and monitor ticket and authentication activity. For accounts that must remain conventional users, use a unique long random secret and an agreed rotation process.
Apply changes as service migrations. SPNs, DNS, firewall paths, clock synchronization, ticket renewal, encryption support and local service rights all have to remain correct, or a well-intended hardening change can cause an outage.

What Kerberoasting and ticket abuse expose
Kerberoasting abuses a normal Kerberos capability. An authenticated domain user can request a service ticket for an account that owns a service principal name (SPN). The ticket is returned to the requester, who can attempt to crack material derived from it offline. The domain controller does not need to be compromised for this step, and the target service account does not have to be interactive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The risk is highest when an SPN is attached to a conventional user account with a short, reused, old or otherwise guessable password. Once a password is recovered, the attacker can authenticate as the service identity and use whatever access that identity has. Related ticket abuse can also involve unusual ticket requests, authentication from hosts that should never run the service, or access to sensitive resources that the service account does not normally touch.

Kerberoasting is not stopped by requiring multifactor authentication from human administrators. Service identities commonly cannot use the same MFA controls as people, and MFA does not make a captured service ticket’s password material impossible to crack. Prevention therefore starts with account design, credential protection, privilege reduction and encryption hygiene.
Build an inventory before changing an account
Do not begin by resetting passwords or deleting SPNs. First create an owner-approved inventory that connects each identity to the service it runs. Include both user objects with SPNs and managed service accounts, plus accounts used by scheduled tasks or application pools that may not be obvious from a quick SPN search.
Collect the identity and service record
- Directory object, account type and enabled status.
- Every SPN, the service class, DNS name and port where applicable.
- Business owner, technical owner, host list and whether the service is single-server, multi-server or load balanced.
- Group memberships, delegated rights, local rights such as “Log on as a service,” and access to sensitive files, databases or administrative interfaces.
- Password age and rotation method for conventional accounts; managed-password configuration for sMSAs and gMSAs.
- Kerberos encryption types in use, known RC4 dependencies, DNS records, firewall paths, time sources and ticket-lifetime requirements.
- Dependencies such as connection strings, scheduled jobs, certificates, scripts, monitoring checks and disaster-recovery hosts.
- Whether the identity is a conventional domain user, an sMSA, a gMSA or a dMSA candidate.

Discovery tools such as Microsoft Defender for Identity can add context about service-account discovery and identity behavior. Treat that telemetry as an aid to inventory and investigation, not as proof that every service account has been found or as a replacement for directory review.
Prioritize the first remediation wave
Start with accounts that combine a reachable SPN, a conventional password, broad group membership, access to sensitive data, old password history, or authentication from many hosts. Also prioritize duplicate SPNs, disabled or ownerless accounts, and identities whose service has been retired. Do not silently delete an apparently unused object: obtain an owner decision, record the rollback path and verify that no scheduled task or recovery process still depends on it.
Choose the right service identity
The correct account type depends on host topology and application support. A managed account reduces handling of reusable secrets, but it does not remove the need for correct SPNs, least privilege and monitoring.
| Identity | Best fit | Credential handling | Important limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| gMSA | A compatible service running on one or multiple Windows hosts, including a shared or load-balanced service. | Active Directory manages the password. Microsoft’s 2023 guidance describes a 240-byte randomly generated password and automatic changes every 30 days; verify the behavior and applicable settings in the target environment. | Scope PrincipalsAllowedToRetrieveManagedPassword to only the hosts that run the service. Confirm application and platform support, SPN ownership and recovery-host coverage. |
| sMSA | A compatible service that runs on one computer. | Managed by Windows rather than an administrator-entered reusable password. | It is not intended to be shared across multiple computers. A service that later expands to several hosts may need a gMSA migration. |
| dMSA | Supported Windows Server 2025 scenarios, particularly migration from a traditional service account to a machine-identity-linked managed account. | Behavior and migration details depend on the supported Windows Server 2025 procedure; do not assume compatibility from the account name alone. | Validate the exact operating-system level, application support, migration workflow and rollback plan in a test environment first. |
| Conventional domain user | Only when the application cannot use an appropriate managed account. | An administrator or service configuration handles a reusable password. | Use one identity per service, a long unique random secret, no unnecessary privilege and an operationally tested rotation process. Rotation cadence is environment-specific and not stated as a universal value. |
Migrate compatible services to managed accounts
Handle migration as a controlled service change. Capture the current SPNs, service logon configuration, permissions, dependencies and rollback credentials before touching the old account.

Prepare a gMSA
- Create a security group containing only the computer accounts that actually run the service. Keep standby or disaster-recovery hosts out unless they are expected to retrieve the password.
- Create the gMSA with a DNS host name and the service’s SPN set. For example, an authorized directory administrator might use
New-ADServiceAccount -Name AppWebGmsa -DNSHostName appweb01.example.com -PrincipalsAllowedToRetrieveManagedPassword AppWebHosts -ServicePrincipalNames HTTP/app.example.com. Adapt names and SPNs to the service; do not copy this example literally into production. - On each authorized host, install and test the account:
Install-ADServiceAccount -Identity AppWebGmsafollowed byTest-ADServiceAccount -Identity AppWebGmsa. A failed test usually indicates host authorization, replication or platform-support problems. - Change the service to log on as the gMSA, normally using the directory form
DOMAINAppWebGmsa$, and allow Windows to manage the password. Do not place a manually chosen password in a script or configuration file. - Move or create SPNs only after confirming that each SPN has one owner. Use
setspn -Qto verify ownership andsetspn -Xto find duplicates. If an SPN must move, remove it from the old identity and add it to the new one in a maintenance window, then confirm directory replication. - Restart the service and test the real client path, not just local process startup. Verify Kerberos authentication, application transactions, scheduled jobs, monitoring and failover.
Use an sMSA for a genuinely single-host service
An sMSA is appropriate when the service is bound to one computer and the application supports it. The single-host constraint is operational: do not install the account on a second server simply to make a temporary workaround. If the design requires several active or standby hosts, evaluate a gMSA instead.
Evaluate dMSA cautiously
Windows Server 2025 introduces dMSA for supported machine-identity-linked scenarios and migration from traditional service accounts. Confirm that every participating server, application and management procedure supports the exact dMSA workflow. A dMSA should not be selected merely because it is newer; test migration, service restart, SPN ownership, recovery and rollback before production use.
Reduce privilege and credential exposure
Changing an account type while leaving excessive access intact simply changes how the same powerful identity is protected. Review the account’s effective access after every migration.
Remove unnecessary privilege
- Remove membership in domain, server, backup, database or application administrator groups unless the service has a documented, unavoidable requirement.
- Replace broad share or database permissions with service-specific rights on the required objects.
- Review local rights on every host, including service-logon rights, scheduled-task rights and permissions inherited from groups.
- Separate identities by service and security boundary. Do not reuse one account across unrelated applications merely because both run on Windows.
- Review access to sensitive data and privileged administrative interfaces as if the account’s password had already been recovered.
Restrict managed-password retrieval
For a gMSA, the authorized-host group is a security boundary. Include only computer accounts that run the service, remove decommissioned hosts promptly, and review group changes as privileged events. A compromised authorized host can retrieve the managed credential, so adding every server in a tier “for convenience” defeats the design.

Protect conventional accounts that cannot migrate
Give each remaining account a unique, long, randomly generated secret. Never reuse it across services or environments. Coordinate the directory password change with the service configuration, secrets store, scheduled tasks, connection pools and recovery documentation so that both sides change together. Record who owns the rotation and how to roll back without leaving the old password broadly distributed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Replace RC4 dependencies with AES deliberately
Kerberos encryption affects both attack cost and compatibility. Microsoft states that updates released on or after November 8, 2022 changed the default for accounts without an explicit encryption setting to AES-SHA1. RC4 can still be used where an application or configuration permits it, particularly when a dependency does not support AES-SHA1.
Microsoft also described a plan to disable RC4 as the default assumed supported type for domain controllers by the end of the second quarter of 2026. That is a dated Microsoft plan, not evidence that every domain controller, account or application has completed the transition. Check installed updates, domain-controller policy and defaults, account attributes and observed authentication behavior in your own estate.
Use an evidence-based encryption rollout
- Inventory applications, operating systems, appliances and libraries that request tickets for the service identities.
- Identify accounts with explicit or implicit RC4 use and document the owner and business impact of each dependency.
- Test the service with AES-SHA1 in a representative environment, including failover hosts, older clients, scheduled work and recovery procedures.
- Change the account or platform configuration in a controlled wave. Do not change every account at once.
- Monitor Kerberos failures and application errors during the change. Preserve a documented rollback decision, but do not use indefinite RC4 compatibility as the permanent fix.
Encryption changes do not compensate for a weak password, excessive privilege or a duplicated SPN. Treat all of those as separate controls.
Best Value
Validate the Kerberos path after every change
A service can appear healthy locally while clients silently fall back to another authentication path or fail only during failover. Validate the complete path:
- SPN: The service name resolves to exactly one account, with no duplicate or stale owner.
- DNS: Forward and reverse resolution, aliases and load-balancer names match the SPN clients request.
- Network: Firewalls, ports and routing permit the client-to-service and service-to-directory traffic required by the application.
- Time: Hosts and domain controllers remain within the organization’s Kerberos clock-skew tolerance.
- Tickets: Lifetime and renewal settings support the application’s longest sessions and scheduled work.
- Encryption: Every participating client, server and library supports the types you intend to allow.
- Authorization: The new identity has the required resource permissions and no inherited administrative access that the old design hid.
- Operations: Monitoring, backup, failover, patching and incident runbooks identify the new identity and its owner.
Monitor for discovery and ticket abuse
Monitoring should answer whether an identity is being requested, used or accessed outside its design. Investigate combinations of signals rather than relying on one alert.
- Unexpected discovery of service accounts or SPN enumeration by a user or host that has no administrative reason to perform it.
- Unusual spikes in service-ticket requests, requests for many unrelated SPNs, or requests originating from a workstation rather than an approved service host.
- Authentication by a service identity from a computer outside its authorized host list.
- Access to sensitive shares, databases or administrative interfaces that is inconsistent with the service’s normal workload.
- Authentication failures immediately after an SPN, password, encryption or managed-account change.
- New group membership, delegated access or authorized-host changes affecting a service identity.
Defender for Identity documents service-account discovery and classic alert guidance relevant to Kerberoasting investigations. Confirm the product’s current alert behavior, data retention and licensing in your tenant before making it an operational dependency. Detection gives responders context; it does not replace strong secrets, managed identities, least privilege or encryption remediation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Response sequence for a suspicious service identity
- Preserve directory, domain-controller, endpoint and application logs before changing the object.
- Determine whether the activity came from an approved host and whether the service’s normal workload explains it.
- Review recent SPN, group-membership, password and authorized-host changes.
- If compromise is plausible, isolate the affected service path according to the incident plan, rotate or replace the credential, and remove unnecessary access.
- Check for use of the identity against sensitive resources and for related identities with the same password or SPN pattern.
- Restore the service only after SPN ownership, encryption, host authorization and application behavior are verified.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
| Symptom | Likely causes | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|---|
KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED or a service that works only with NTLM |
Duplicate SPN, SPN on the old account, wrong DNS alias or a service running under a different identity. | Query the exact SPN, remove stale ownership, assign it to the running identity, verify DNS and restart the service. |
KDC_ERR_S_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN |
Missing SPN, typo in the service name or directory replication delay. | Compare the client’s requested name with the registered SPN, correct the entry and allow replication before retesting. |
| gMSA installation or password test fails | The computer is not in the authorized group, the group change has not replicated, or the host does not support the account. | Check group membership, replication and operating-system/application support; do not widen authorization to every server as a shortcut. |
| Service starts but cannot read a resource | The new identity lacks a required share, database, certificate or local permission. | Compare the old account’s effective access with the documented service requirement and grant only the missing service-specific right. |
| Intermittent failure on a multi-host service | A failover host cannot retrieve the gMSA, has stale DNS, lacks network access or does not support the selected encryption type. | Test every active and standby host separately, then verify host authorization, DNS, firewall, time and encryption. |
| Authentication failures after disabling RC4 | An unremediated client or library still depends on RC4. | Identify the failing principal and application, restore service only under the approved rollback plan, then upgrade or reconfigure the dependency and retest AES. |
A practical rollout order
- Baseline: Export SPNs, service owners, host scope, privileges, encryption settings and dependencies.
- Contain: Remove unnecessary privileged-group membership, quarantine duplicate SPNs and disable ownerless accounts only after service impact is confirmed.
- Migrate: Move compatible single-host services to sMSAs and multi-host services to gMSAs with tightly scoped host authorization. Evaluate dMSA only for supported Windows Server 2025 migrations.
- Harden exceptions: Give each remaining conventional account a unique random secret and an owner-backed rotation and rollback process.
- Modernize encryption: Find RC4 dependencies, test AES-SHA1, remediate clients and roll out in monitored waves.
- Verify and watch: Test SPN, DNS, network, time, tickets, permissions and failover, then monitor discovery, ticket requests and authentication from unapproved hosts.
The result you want is not merely fewer user accounts with SPNs. It is a service identity for which the password is not manually exposed, host retrieval is constrained, privileges are narrow, Kerberos encryption is understood, and every owner can explain how the service is changed and recovered.
