Secure a connected robotic mower by first identifying its actual communication methods, then changing its mower PIN and account credentials, protecting the home Wi‑Fi network, updating firmware and the companion app, and applying router-level isolation only after you confirm that app, cloud, and update services still work. The exact controls differ by model. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your mower, and do not disable a connection that the mower needs for safety, control, diagnostics, or updates.
What “secure” means for a connected mower
A smart mower can have several separate security boundaries: a physical or setup PIN, a companion-app account, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, cellular service, cloud APIs, and the router that connects it to the internet. Securing one boundary does not automatically secure the others. A strong Wi‑Fi password cannot replace a changed mower PIN, and a changed app password does not fix an exposed Bluetooth implementation.

Start with the exact model and software version. Connectivity and security controls vary even within one product family. Husqvarna’s support guidance, for example, says all Automower models from 2018 use Bluetooth, while only selected models also provide Wi‑Fi or mobile connectivity. Its Wi‑Fi instructions distinguish Wi‑Fi-only models from models that use both Wi‑Fi and mobile service. Your mower may use a different combination, so treat these details as an example of model-specific behavior rather than a universal rule.

1. Map every connection before changing settings
Write down the model name, hardware revision if listed, firmware version, companion app, and every network or short-range connection it supports. This prevents you from isolating a device from a service it needs.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is commonly used for initial setup and nearby control. It may work even when the mower has no Wi‑Fi or cellular radio. Determine whether Bluetooth is required only during setup or remains available for routine commands. Keep the mower’s Bluetooth pairing and PIN instructions nearby before resetting anything.
Wi‑Fi
Wi‑Fi may carry app commands, status data, cloud traffic, diagnostics, and firmware downloads. Record the bands and security modes your model supports and whether the charging station must have coverage. Husqvarna says Wi‑Fi-only Automower models need a strong Wi‑Fi signal at the charging station for update delivery. A mower placed at the edge of coverage may appear secure but fail to receive patches or cloud commands reliably.

Mobile or cellular service
Some models use a built-in mobile connection in addition to Wi‑Fi. Identify which functions use cellular service and whether a subscription, regional network, or account activation is required. Do not assume that placing the mower on an isolated Wi‑Fi network will affect a cellular path; the manufacturer’s documentation should explain which functions continue independently.
Cloud and app dependencies
List functions that depend on the vendor’s servers: remote start or stop, schedules, notifications, location or status viewing, diagnostics, and software updates. The names differ by product. This list becomes your test plan after you change network controls.

| Connection or service | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Whether it is setup-only or used for ongoing control; how pairing and the mower PIN work | A nearby attacker or an owner performing a reset may encounter a different control path than a remote app user |
| Wi‑Fi | Supported bands, security mode, charging-station coverage, and cloud functions | Weak coverage can interrupt control and prevent update delivery |
| Mobile/cellular | Whether the model has it, which features use it, and any regional or subscription limits | Router isolation does not govern a separate cellular path |
| Cloud/app | Account login, notifications, remote commands, diagnostics, and update behavior | These services must remain reachable after any router policy change |
2. Change the mower PIN and account credentials
Change the device PIN during setup
If your mower has a setup or security PIN, replace the factory value before normal operation. Husqvarna says Automower units produced in 2024 or later use factory PIN 1234 and recommends changing it during initial setup. That statement applies to the named Automower models and production period; it is not evidence that other brands use the same value.
- Open the manufacturer’s setup instructions for the exact model and confirm whether the PIN is changed on the mower, in the app, or both.
- Choose a code that is not a delivery date, address, repeated digit pattern, or a code used on another device.
- Store the new code in a password manager or another protected record. Do not leave it on the charging station or in a public-facing shed.
- After saving it, lock and unlock the relevant mower or app function once so you know the new code works.
The PIN is one barrier, not the entire remote-access system. A model may separately authenticate the app account, Bluetooth pairing, cloud session, or service technician mode.
Protect the companion-app account
If the manufacturer provides an account password, use a unique password that is not reused for email, shopping, or the home router. Turn on multifactor authentication when the manufacturer supports it. Review signed-in devices, shared household access, and recovery email or phone details. Remove former owners, installers, or unused family accounts rather than leaving them active.
The cited Husqvarna guidance specifically supports changing the Automower PIN; it does not establish that every Automower account offers every account-security feature. Use only controls documented for your app and model.
3. Put the mower on a private, secure home network
Use a private home network protected by the router’s current security mode and a strong, unique Wi‑Fi password. Husqvarna’s Automower guidance states: Only connect Automower to a secure home Wi-Fi network
. It also advises against public networks such as those at coffee shops, hotels, or public parks. Public access points can expose credentials, interfere with onboarding, and place the mower behind policies you do not control.

- Full Gigabit Ports: Create fast, reliable wired connections for your PCs, Smart TVs and gaming console with 4 x Gigabit LAN and 1 x Gigabit WAN. No USB Port
Check the router itself
- Change the router’s administrator password if it is still the default or reused elsewhere.
- Install the router manufacturer’s available firmware updates.
- Use the strongest Wi‑Fi security mode supported by both the router and mower; do not weaken the whole network merely to accommodate an old device without checking whether a separate network is possible.
- Disable remote router administration from the internet unless you have a specific, well-understood need for it.
- Review the connected-device list and confirm that the mower and charging station appear as expected.
Do not hide the network name as a substitute for authentication, and do not place the mower on a network that forces a web sign-in page. Many IoT devices cannot complete captive-portal authentication reliably.
Keep coverage where the mower charges
Walk the signal path between the router or access point and the charging station. Metal sheds, thick walls, and outdoor distance can produce intermittent service. If the mower requires Wi‑Fi for cloud functions or updates, improve coverage with a properly secured access point or mesh node rather than leaving the mower permanently offline. Confirm that an extender or mesh system preserves the same security settings and does not create an unprotected backhaul.
4. Keep mower firmware and the app current
Software updates can correct security defects, improve authentication, and maintain compatibility with cloud services. Check the mower’s update screen, the companion app, and the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Install updates when they are offered, and read any release notes or safety instructions before starting.
Understand the update path
Husqvarna says firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) updates are available for some Automower models. Its Wi‑Fi instructions state that Wi‑Fi-only models need strong Wi‑Fi at the charging station for updates, while models with Wi‑Fi and mobile connectivity have different capabilities. Do not assume that every mower can update over Wi‑Fi, cellular, or automatically.
- Record the current firmware and app versions before updating.
- Place the mower in its charging station and ensure power is stable, following the model’s instructions.
- Install the update through the documented app or mower menu. Do not interrupt power or remove the mower during a firmware write.
- Restart or re-pair only if the manufacturer’s procedure requires it.
- Check the version afterward and test a noncritical app function, such as viewing status, before relying on remote commands.
Enable automatic updates only when the manufacturer documents that behavior and you understand how failures are reported. If updates repeatedly fail, first check charging-station Wi‑Fi strength, account status, and available storage or battery requirements specified by the manufacturer. Do not download firmware from an unofficial mirror.

5. Use router-level IoT isolation without breaking required services
A separate IoT or guest network can reduce the mower’s ability to reach other household devices if the router implements isolation correctly. It is a containment measure, not a complete security solution. The mower still needs the communications required for its intended functions.
NIST’s Securing Small-Business and Home Internet of Things (IoT) Devices practice guide, finalized May 26, 2021, describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) as a way to express those requirements. NIST states: MUD provides a standard way for manufacturers to indicate the network communications that a device requires to perform its intended function.
In practical terms, a router policy should allow only documented destinations and protocols, rather than granting every IoT device unrestricted access or blocking the internet indiscriminately.
Apply isolation safely
- Check whether your router offers an IoT network, guest-network client isolation, device groups, or per-device access policies.
- Read how that feature handles access to your phone, local discovery, DNS, time services, and the internet. Some guest networks block device-to-device traffic, which can prevent local setup.
- Move the mower or charging station to the isolated network only after noting its original network name and password.
- Reconnect the companion app using the manufacturer’s documented process.
- Test local setup, app status, remote commands, notifications, cloud-dependent functions, and update checks.
- If a required function fails, loosen only the relevant policy or return the mower to the prior network while you consult the manufacturer and router documentation.
Avoid inventing port numbers, DNS exceptions, or firewall rules. The reviewed guidance does not provide a universal port list for robotic mowers, and a rule that works for one model can disable another. NIST’s Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products, finalized September 10, 2024, treats router security as an important part of protecting smart-home IoT, but it does not define a mower-specific preset.

7. Check model-specific security advisories
Search the manufacturer’s security-notice page and the NIST National Vulnerability Database for your exact model and firmware, not just the product family name. Read the affected configuration, attack prerequisites, severity, and remediation before deciding that a warning applies.
What CVE-2024-12078 does and does not show
The NVD record for CVE-2024-12078 describes ECOVACS robot lawn mowers and vacuums using a shared static secret key for Bluetooth Low Energy GATT messages. It says an unauthenticated attacker within Bluetooth range may control a robot using the same key. The record’s listed affected configuration names Deebot N10 firmware.
That scope is important: the record does not establish that every ECOVACS mower, every firmware release, or every connected mower is vulnerable. Owners should check the current manufacturer notice and firmware instructions for their exact model, apply an available fix, and ask the manufacturer for clarification when the model or version is not listed. Do not treat a generic internet post as proof that your mower is affected.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom after hardening | Likely area to check | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|
| The app cannot find the mower during setup | Bluetooth pairing, local discovery, or guest-network isolation | Follow the model’s pairing reset procedure, temporarily use the documented setup network, then reapply isolation after pairing |
| Status works locally but remote control fails | Cloud access, DNS, time synchronization, or router internet policy | Review the router’s isolation and outbound controls; do not guess ports |
| Firmware update is unavailable | Weak charging-station Wi‑Fi, unsupported update path, account state, or model eligibility | Confirm the exact model’s update method and improve coverage before changing firewall rules |
| Notifications stopped | Cloud service reachability, app permissions, or account session | Re-authenticate in the official app, check phone notification permissions, and verify the mower’s cloud connection |
| The mower appears on the wrong network | Saved Wi‑Fi credentials, mesh roaming, or a duplicated network name | Forget the old network through the documented reset process and use a distinct, secured IoT network name |
| Bluetooth control remains available unexpectedly | Bluetooth may be a permanent model feature rather than setup-only | Read the manual for Bluetooth range, pairing removal, and PIN controls; router isolation cannot disable Bluetooth |
If a change leaves the mower in an unsafe or unknown state, stop remote operation, place it in the charging station if the manual permits, and use the manufacturer’s recovery procedure. Avoid repeated factory resets unless you know what credentials, schedules, and safety settings will be erased.
What to evaluate before buying or replacing a connected mower
Security documentation is a practical buying criterion. Compare exact models rather than assuming that a brand-wide policy applies.
- Does the manufacturer clearly document Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and cellular paths?
- Can you change the factory PIN, and does the app support unique passwords and multifactor authentication?
- How are firmware updates delivered, and does the manufacturer publish supported model and version information?
- Can the mower operate on a separate IoT network while retaining app, cloud, diagnostics, and update functions?
- Are security advisories easy to find, with affected configurations and remediation steps?
- Does the charging-station location provide reliable coverage without exposing the main household network?
There is not enough evidence in the cited material to rank mower brands by security. A model with clear documentation and continuing firmware support is easier to operate safely than one whose connection methods and update process are undocumented, but documentation alone is not a guarantee of vulnerability-free software.
When can a robotic mower be considered reasonably secured?
You have a defensible baseline when the exact model’s connections are known; the factory PIN has been replaced where applicable; the app account uses unique credentials; the mower is on a private, secured network; current firmware and app versions are installed; router isolation is configured only where documented and tested; and app, cloud, local-control, notification, and update functions have all been verified. Recheck those conditions after a router replacement, account change, firmware update, or manufacturer security advisory.
Security remains an ongoing maintenance task. Keep the manufacturer’s instructions for your model, review new advisories, and preserve the network services the mower needs instead of pursuing isolation so aggressively that updates or safety functions silently stop working.
