Protect the family member’s email early, since it may receive password-reset links. If someone has already taken over an account, use the provider’s official recovery process; if sensitive identity or financial information was exposed, follow the Federal Trade Commission’s steps for that type of data.
This guidance is U.S.-oriented. Keep your family member involved as you work through their accounts, and have them use the provider’s official site or recovery process. Don’t ask them to send you passwords or one-time codes over chat or email.

1. Find out what information was exposed
Read the breach notice and identify the specific data involved: a password, Social Security number, bank information, or something else. The right response depends on the information exposed and whether the account is merely at risk or already under someone else’s control. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov/databreach provides steps tailored to the type of data involved.
2. Change exposed and reused passwords
Change the password for the breached service promptly. The FTC says, “If a company or website tells you it lost your password in a data breach, change your password right away.” Then change it anywhere else it was reused, including accounts with a similar password. Give each account its own password so one exposed credential cannot unlock several services.

The FTC’s password guidance recommends at least 12 characters on one page and says to aim for at least 15 characters on another. These are recommendations from separate FTC articles, not a universal technical cutoff. Both emphasize using long, unique passwords that are difficult to guess; random-word passphrases are one option.
A browser or device may be able to generate and store unique passwords. A password manager is another option, not a requirement. Choose an approach your family member can use consistently, and avoid keeping passwords in a shared chat or email thread.

3. Secure the email account used for recovery
Email deserves early attention because password-reset links often arrive in the inbox. Give the email account a unique password, turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) if available, and check its recovery email address, phone number, and other security settings.

4. Contain a possibly hijacked account
Warning signs include unexpected notices that a password, username, email address, or phone number changed; sign-in alerts for unfamiliar devices or locations; being unable to sign in; or contacts receiving messages the account holder did not send.

- Change the password to a new, unique one.
- Sign out other active sessions or devices using the service’s security settings, if that option is available.
- Turn on 2FA if the service supports it.
- Verify recovery details and remove any email address or phone number the account holder does not recognize.
- Check for unauthorized changes, including email-forwarding rules, sent or deleted messages, and unexpected activity on social accounts.
Where a service offers security questions, reset them if possible. Use answers that are hard to guess or find online; if the service requires questions, treat the answers like passwords and make them unique.
5. Choose a second factor the account supports
2FA adds a step beyond the password. The FTC describes three kinds of factors: something known, such as a password; something possessed, such as a code or security key; and something inherent, such as a fingerprint. The options available depend on the service and account.

Follow the provider’s setup and recovery instructions so your family member knows how to regain access if a device or key is lost.
6. If they are locked out, use official account recovery
Use the service’s own account-recovery instructions rather than links in an unexpected breach notice, password alert, or recovery message. The FTC’s hacked-account alert links to recovery pages for major email and social platforms. If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, reach the company through a website or phone number you already know is legitimate.
If the compromised account sent messages, warn the family member’s contacts not to click its links or respond to requests for money.

7. Respond to exposed identity or financial information
For an exposed Social Security number, the FTC recommends ordering credit reports and checking for accounts the person does not recognize. A credit freeze or fraud alert can make it harder for someone to open new accounts in their name. The appropriate next steps depend on the information exposed; use IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for guidance matched to the breach.
If the company affected by the breach offers free credit monitoring or identity theft insurance, the FTC advises taking advantage of those protections.
