The device keeps signing keys away from an internet-connected computer, but the phrase can recreate the entire wallet, so anyone who obtains it can potentially control the assets.
This guide explains the security model, an exact setup workflow, backup choices, recovery procedures, and the attacks a hardware wallet cannot stop.

What a hardware wallet and recovery phrase actually protect
Cryptocurrency is recorded on blockchains; a wallet manages the private keys that authorize transactions. A hardware wallet is a dedicated device intended to keep those signing keys inside the device. When you approve a transaction, the device signs it internally and returns the signature to the connected wallet application. Malware on the computer therefore has fewer opportunities to copy the keys directly.

It is not merely a password for the device. Possession of the phrase can be equivalent to possession of the wallet, even if the hardware device is elsewhere and protected by a PIN. MetaMask advises creating a new phrase on the hardware wallet rather than importing a phrase that was previously used in an internet-connected software wallet.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Think of the two parts as separate controls:
- Hardware device: protects key use during normal signing and requires confirmation on the device.
- Recovery phrase: restores the wallet if the device is lost or damaged, but also gives a person who finds it the ability to restore the wallet elsewhere.
- Device PIN: limits local access to that particular device; it does not replace or regenerate the recovery phrase.
A hardware wallet is not a guarantee against theft. Ledger’s security guidance states that users remain exposed to social engineering, physical threats, and human error. A device can keep keys out of a computer while you are still tricked into approving a malicious transaction or revealing the backup.
Prepare a safe setup before initializing the device
Obtain an uninitialized device
Use a trustworthy sales channel and follow the selected manufacturer’s current instructions. When the package arrives, the device should not come with a preconfigured PIN or a printed recovery phrase. A pre-completed phrase or PIN can indicate a pre-owned or tampered-with device. Stop and contact the manufacturer through its official support route if the device is already configured.
Choose a private environment
Initialize the wallet where nobody can see the screen or your written backup. Turn off cameras and screen-sharing, and do not let another person “help” by recording the words. You should be the only person who ever sees the complete phrase.

Download the wallet application from the manufacturer or the network wallet you intend to use, and verify that you are using its genuine website or app store listing. The application can display balances and prepare transactions, but the hardware device must remain the place where keys are generated and signatures are approved.
Initialize the hardware wallet and create a new phrase
- Start the device as new. Select the option to create a new wallet, not to restore an existing one. If your purpose is to establish an offline key boundary, do not import a phrase that has previously lived in a phone or computer wallet.
- Allow the device to generate the phrase. The words must be generated by the device itself. Never accept a phrase sent by email, printed in the box, shown in a chat, or supplied by a supposed support agent.
- Write every word in order. Use the supplied card or another offline medium. Copy the spelling and sequence exactly; do not substitute synonyms, rearrange words, or retain only part of the list. MetaMask specifically advises checking spelling and order.
- Set a device PIN. Choose a PIN that is not obvious and do not disclose it. The PIN protects local use of the device, while the phrase remains the recovery authority.
- Complete the device’s verification challenge. Most devices ask you to select or re-enter words to prove that the backup was recorded. Treat this as a transcription check, not as a reason to type the phrase into a computer.
- Connect the device to the wallet application. Add the accounts you need and confirm that receiving addresses shown in the application match the addresses displayed on the device screen.
- Run the official backup-check process. If the manufacturer provides a backup-check feature, use it before depending on the record. Trezor advises checking a newly created backup before destroying an older backup.
Never photograph the phrase, scan it, paste it into a note, or type it into a phone or computer. A cloud photo library, email account, password manager, chat, or document synchronized to the internet turns an offline backup into a remotely attackable copy.
Record and store the recovery phrase safely
The phrase must remain both secret and readable. Store it offline in a location that the owner can reach when needed but visitors, contractors, thieves, and casual household members cannot discover. A locked container or other access-controlled location is more important than an attractive hiding place.
Paper
Paper is inexpensive and easy to write, but it can burn, get wet, fade, tear, or become illegible. Use a permanent writing method, keep the card flat, and inspect it periodically without exposing it to other people. A damaged or missing word can make recovery fail.
Metal backup
Steel plates and capsules are optional durability measures for people who need resistance to hazards such as fire and water. Ledger describes steel backup products in those terms. Metal does not make the phrase theft-proof: anyone who can read or reconstruct the engraving can restore the wallet. Keep a metal backup discreet and access-controlled, and consider whether the process of engraving or assembling it exposes the words.

Multiple copies
A second physical copy can protect against destruction of the first, but each additional copy creates another place that must remain secret. Do not leave copies in offices, vehicles, untrusted safes, or with a person who could photograph them. Decide who is allowed to access each copy before making it.
| Backup approach | Strength | Limitation | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper card | Simple, inexpensive, quick to replace | Vulnerable to fire, water, fading, and tearing | A controlled indoor location with low physical hazard |
| Metal plate or capsule | Greater resistance to environmental damage | Still readable by a thief; recording can expose the phrase | Locations where durability against fire or water matters |
| Two independent physical copies | One copy can survive loss of the other | Twice the number of places that must be secured | Owners who can control two separate secure locations |
| Purpose-built threshold backup | Can avoid a single complete phrase being stored in one place | Format-specific, more complex, and easy to misunderstand | Users who can follow the documented scheme exactly |
Do not improvise a split phrase
Cutting a phrase into arbitrary pieces is not automatically safer. You can lose the required ordering, create an unrecoverable backup, or give an attacker enough information to guess the remainder. If you need a distributed backup, use a documented threshold format supported by the device and wallet.
Trezor documents SLIP39 multi-share backups. In its three-of-five example, any three of five shares can restore the wallet; its documented setup can create up to 16 shares. Those share counts and lengths apply to supported devices and formats, not to every hardware wallet. Keep an inventory of which shares exist and test the documented recovery procedure before relying on it.

Understand backup word counts and compatibility
There is no universal recovery-phrase length. Trezor’s knowledge base describes BIP39 backups with 12 or 24 words and SLIP39 backups with 20 words on supported devices, with device-specific defaults that can change by model and software version. Ledger describes 24-word backups for its devices. MetaMask describes a 12-word phrase for its phrase-based wallet and notes that other wallets may use 18 or 24 words.
Before buying a second device or planning recovery in another wallet, check all three items:
- The backup standard used by the original device, such as BIP39 or a supported SLIP39 mode.
- The exact word count and any model-specific default.
- Whether the destination device and wallet software support the same assets, derivation paths, networks, and backup format.
A compatible second hardware wallet can be useful, but no manufacturer can promise that every device restores every wallet. Follow the current instructions for the exact models and assets involved.
Test the backup before you need it
- Locate the manufacturer’s official backup-check or recovery-test procedure.
- Perform the check in a private environment without photographing or typing the phrase into a connected device.
- Confirm that the restored wallet derives the expected accounts and receiving addresses. Do not send funds until the displayed addresses have been independently checked.
- Keep the original device and the verified backup until you are confident that the record is complete and legible.
A test should prove that your written record works with the intended format; it should not involve entering the phrase into a website or sending it to support. If the device offers no safe check, follow its official recovery instructions and verify compatibility before moving significant funds.

Recover access after loss or damage
The device is lost, but the phrase is safe
Obtain a compatible hardware wallet and choose its restore-existing-wallet option. Enter the phrase only on the new hardware device, following its official instructions. Then verify that the expected accounts and balances appear in the wallet application. The old device can be treated as unavailable; the phrase is what recreates the keys.

The device works, but the backup is damaged
Do not discard the device. If it still unlocks, create a fresh, verified backup according to the manufacturer’s process while you can access the wallet. Record it offline and check it before relying on it. Never attempt to reconstruct uncertain words by guessing on an internet-connected application.
Both the device and usable phrase are gone
Self-custody has no universal recovery desk. MetaMask states, “MetaMask cannot recover your wallet for you.” If the device and the recovery method are both unavailable, a provider may have no technical ability to restore the assets.
What to do if the phrase may have been exposed
Assume the wallet is compromised if the complete phrase was photographed, typed into a computer or phone, uploaded, emailed, or shown to another person. A PIN change does not revoke the phrase. Ledger notes that sharing the phrase can give others access without an easy way to revoke it.

Phishing and fake support
A convincing website or message can ask for the phrase, PIN, or a “synchronization” action. No support representative, wallet website, or recovery service should receive the phrase. Navigate to official software through a known source rather than a link in an unexpected message.
Malicious transaction approvals
The device can securely sign a transaction that you intentionally approve. If the transaction grants a hostile contract permission, sends funds to the wrong address, or interacts with a malicious application, key isolation does not make that approval safe. Read the device display and application details, and cancel anything you do not understand.
Physical coercion and theft
A thief may target the device, the backup, or the person who controls them. Keep the phrase location discreet and avoid discussing balances or storage arrangements. A durable backup addresses environmental damage, not coercion or discovery.
User error
Wrong word order, spelling mistakes, unsupported formats, unverified addresses, and accidental approvals can all cause loss. Slow down at recovery and signing checkpoints; convenience is less valuable than an independently checked record.

How to compare hardware-wallet options
There is no evidence-based universal “safest” model. Compare the features that change your actual security and recovery process:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Assets and networks | Does the device and its wallet software support every asset and network you intend to hold? |
| Backup format | Is it BIP39, SLIP39, or another documented format? What word count and restore options apply to this model? |
| Transaction verification | Can you clearly read the destination address, amount, network, and approval on the device display? |
| Backup checks | Does the manufacturer provide an official verification or recovery-test process? |
| Connection and form factor | Will the required cable, wireless connection, mobile support, or desktop software fit your routine without encouraging unsafe shortcuts? |
| Recovery compatibility | Can a second device or wallet restore this exact backup format and derive the accounts you need? |
Treat manufacturer feature descriptions as specifications, not as independent proof of superiority. Confirm current model instructions and supported assets before transferring funds.
A maintenance checklist for self-custody
- Keep the complete phrase offline; never place it in a cloud, email, chat, photo library, password manager, phone, or computer.
- Inspect the physical backup occasionally for legibility without exposing it to others.
- Keep the device PIN private and remember that it cannot replace the phrase.
- Use the device screen to verify addresses and transaction details before every approval.
- Update wallet software and device firmware only through genuine manufacturer channels, while following the vendor’s documented process.
- Review whether a second copy or a documented threshold scheme is appropriate for your physical risks.
- Record the exact device model, backup format, and recovery instructions somewhere that does not contain the phrase itself.
- Plan what happens if you are unavailable, but do not hand the complete phrase to an untrusted person or service.
Bottom line
Initialize the hardware wallet yourself, generate a fresh phrase on it, write every word in order, verify the backup using the manufacturer’s process, and store the record offline where it is both secret and recoverable. Use a durable metal backup only when its resistance to environmental damage justifies the added handling; it does not prevent theft. The device reduces direct key exposure, but careful transaction approval and protection of the recovery phrase remain your responsibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a recovery phrase from my phone wallet on a hardware wallet?
You can restore a compatible phrase, but doing so does not create a new offline key boundary if that phrase was already exposed to an internet-connected device. For a fresh hardware-wallet setup, initialize the device and let it generate a new phrase, then move assets to the new addresses.
How many words should my recovery phrase have?
Use the length generated and documented for your exact device and backup format. BIP39 commonly uses 12 or 24 words, while supported SLIP39 setups use 20-word shares; other wallets may use 18 or 24 words.
Is a metal seed-phrase backup safer than paper?
It is generally more resistant to fire and water, but it is not more secret. Anyone who can read the metal backup can restore the wallet, so it still needs discreet, access-controlled storage.
What should I do if someone saw my phrase?
Treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet and phrase on a trusted hardware device, verify its addresses on the device, and move assets from the exposed wallet while checking every transaction detail.
