The most resilient exchange-account setup uses several controls together: secure the email account first, add a phishing-resistant passkey when the platform supports it, keep an authenticator-app method as a carefully protected backup, and restrict withdrawals to verified addresses with an allowlist. Review separate protections for sign-in, trading, funding, API keys, and security-setting changes; one login challenge does not automatically protect every action.
Exact menus, supported devices, recovery options, and withdrawal delays vary by exchange, region, account type, and product tier. The procedures below use Coinbase, Coinbase Exchange, Binance, and Kraken as documented examples, not universal instructions for every crypto app.

What each security control actually protects
Passkeys
A passkey is a FIDO2 credential held by an enrolled device or, in some setups, a hardware security key. Kraken describes its passkeys as phishing-resistant and says they can be unlocked with a biometric, a device screen-lock PIN, or a hardware security key. That description is Kraken’s platform guidance; another exchange may support different devices, synchronization, or recovery behavior.

You still need to protect the device that stores the passkey and understand how to regain access if it is lost, erased, or replaced.

Kraken’s official 2FA page states: “Important: We highly recommend enabling Passkeys over any other 2FA method.” That is a vendor recommendation, not an independent effectiveness percentage or a promise that account theft is impossible.
Two-factor authentication
“2FA” can mean different controls for different actions. An exchange may separately protect:
- Signing in
- Trading or placing orders
- Funding and withdrawals
- Changing security settings or resetting credentials
- Creating or changing API keys
- A platform-specific master or recovery key
Kraken explicitly separates sign-in, trading, funding, and Master Key 2FA. Its guidance says sign-in 2FA can trigger additional checks when 2FA settings are changed, while withdrawal and trading protections depend on sign-in 2FA or a Global Settings Lock being in place. Do not assume that enabling a login challenge automatically covers withdrawals, API access, or a change to your email address.
Withdrawal allowlists
An allowlist (also called an address whitelist or address book) limits withdrawals to destinations you have approved. It is a second boundary after account access: a thief who gets into the account may be unable to send funds to a new address until the exchange’s delay expires. The control only works to the extent the exchange enforces it, and it does not make a compromised receiving wallet, exchange, or blockchain address safe.
Allowlisting introduces deliberate friction. Coinbase’s consumer help documentation says a newly added address becomes available for sends after 48 hours. Binance documents configurable suspension periods of 24, 48, or 72 hours for certain whitelist changes. These are platform-specific policies, not an industry-wide standard.
Secure the email account and devices first
Your exchange account is only as strong as the accounts that can reset it or approve a withdrawal. Kraken warns that access to a linked email account can enable username retrieval, password resets, and withdrawal approval. Complete these steps before changing exchange settings:
- Use a unique, long password for the email account; do not reuse the exchange password.
- Enable a passkey or authenticator-app 2FA on the email service when available. Kraken advises avoiding SMS 2FA if another option exists.
- Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, backup codes, and active sessions. Remove routes or devices you no longer control.
- Consider a dedicated email account used only for financial services. Keep its recovery details in a separate, secure place so losing one device does not remove every recovery option.
- Protect phones and computers with an up-to-date operating system, screen lock, encrypted storage where available, and automatic updates.
- Check unexpected security notices by opening the official app or a bookmark you created yourself, rather than clicking a message link.
Never give a support representative a password, passkey, seed phrase, authenticator code, or recovery code. A caller or chat agent asking for remote access is a likely impersonator.

Enable a passkey safely
Use the exchange’s official app or type its known web address yourself. Menu names differ, but the process usually follows this sequence:
- Open the account’s Security, Sign-in, or Two-step verification page.
- Choose Passkey or Security key and authenticate with your existing password and 2FA, if requested.
- Approve the device prompt with its biometric or screen-lock PIN, or insert and touch a compatible FIDO2 hardware security key.
- Give the credential a recognizable name, such as “Personal phone” or “Office security key,” if the exchange offers naming.
- Check where the passkey is stored or synchronized. Some systems keep it only on one device; others synchronize it through a device-account service.
- Before removing an old phone or resetting a computer, add and test another approved sign-in method, if the exchange permits one.
A FIDO2 hardware security key can be useful as an offline backup, but compatibility is exchange- and device-dependent. The cited platform material does not endorse a particular brand or model, and no hardware was tested here. Confirm that your exchange supports the key’s connector, NFC, browser, and operating system before buying one.
Configure 2FA for every sensitive action
After enrolling a passkey, inspect the entire security dashboard rather than stopping at “login protected.” Make a written inventory of which method protects each action:
| Action | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in | Passkey, authenticator app, or another supported method | Blocks ordinary password-only access. |
| Trading | Separate trading 2FA or a global lock | Prevents an intruder from placing or canceling orders if the account is open. |
| Funding and withdrawals | Funding 2FA, withdrawal 2FA, address allowlist, and any hold period | Controls movement of assets out of the account. |
| Security changes | Step-up verification for changing 2FA, email, password, or recovery settings | Stops an intruder from disabling protection before stealing funds. |
| API keys | Creation, permission limits, IP restrictions, and 2FA prompts | An unused or over-privileged key can bypass parts of the normal app workflow. |
Authenticator apps generate time-based codes. Kraken describes its codes as 6–8 digits that change every 30 seconds (guidance updated August 5, 2025). Store the authenticator backup or transfer information separately and securely; never photograph or email it to someone offering “support.”

Set up a withdrawal allowlist without locking yourself out
Prepare the destination
- Open the receiving wallet or service and use its deposit screen to obtain the address.
- Confirm the asset name and the network selected by the recipient. A correct-looking address on the wrong network can be unusable or unrecoverable.
- Compare the first and last characters on the exchange with the receiving service. Malware can replace a copied address, so verify the full value through an independent view when practical.
- Decide whether the destination is a wallet you control, a business account, or another service. Add only destinations you have verified.
Binance says an address added for a particular crypto must also have the correct network selected. Coinbase’s consumer guidance says EVM assets should use an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) address. Follow the receiving wallet’s current instructions rather than assuming that every asset uses the same network or address format.
Record the exchange’s activation date
Save the date and time shown after you add an address. A delay is a security feature, not an error. Keep an emergency plan for funds that genuinely must move during the hold, because disabling the allowlist may itself trigger another waiting period.
Platform-specific examples
Coinbase consumer account
Coinbase’s consumer help page describes allowlisting as limiting sends to addresses in the address book. It requires access to 2-step verification to activate, deactivate, and use the feature. The documented setup path begins in profile settings; because labels can change, open the current Security or Address Book controls in your own account and confirm the screen before saving an address.

On the consumer feature described by Coinbase, a newly added address is available for sends after 48 hours. Turning allowlisting off generally also takes 48 hours, except when it is disabled within eight hours of activation. These timings were stated on a Coinbase Help page accessed October 13, 2026, and may change by region or product version.

Coinbase Exchange documents a separate Address Book or whitelisting feature with a 48-hour hold for new addresses. The documentation says this feature is available on Coinbase Exchange and not on Coinbase.com or the Coinbase consumer app. Do not follow Exchange instructions expecting the same controls in a regular consumer account.
Binance
Binance’s documented navigation is Settings > Withdrawal > Address Management. Add an address label, choose the specific crypto, select its network where applicable, and verify the addition with a passkey or 2FA. The reviewed Binance support page says whitelist modifications may suspend withdrawals for 24, 48, or 72 hours, depending on the selected setting. It also describes a configurable withdrawal limit that suspends withdrawals to newly added addresses for a chosen period.
The same article shows a maximum of 200 withdrawal addresses; the limit was stated on a Binance Support page accessed October 13, 2026, and should be rechecked in the current account because product limits can change.
Binance also describes a “one-step withdrawal” option that can permit a small withdrawal to an allowlisted address without 2FA. Convenience settings reduce friction but also remove a check from that specific transaction. Read the current warning and decide whether the amount and account risk justify enabling it.
Kraken
Kraken’s 2FA documentation separates sign-in, trading, funding, and Master Key functions. It recommends passkeys over other 2FA methods and describes passkeys as FIDO2 credentials that may use biometrics, a PIN, or a hardware security key. Kraken’s broader account-security guidance recommends withdrawal, trading, and API-key protections, review of active sessions and devices, and avoiding SMS 2FA when another option is available.
Kraken’s terminology is platform-specific. A different exchange may group funding and withdrawal controls differently or use a different name for a global lock. Map the settings in your own dashboard before assuming that a Kraken control exists elsewhere.

Passkeys, authenticator codes, and SMS: practical trade-offs
| Method | Phishing resistance | Main dependency | Typical weakness or inconvenience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passkey or FIDO2 security key | Strong when implemented as a FIDO2 credential; Kraken describes its passkeys as phishing-resistant. | Enrolled device or compatible hardware key and its recovery process. | A lost, erased, or unavailable device can make recovery difficult unless another method was enrolled. |
| Authenticator-app code | Better than SMS against phone-number takeover, but a code can still be entered into a convincing fake site. | Authenticator seed, app backup or transfer process, and accurate device time. | Codes expire quickly; Kraken describes 6–8 digits changing every 30 seconds. |
| SMS code | Lower resistance to phishing and exposed to risks involving control of the phone number. | Mobile number, carrier account, and cellular service. | Number transfer or SIM-related attacks, delivery delays, and loss of service can interfere with access. |
Kraken advises choosing passkeys over other 2FA methods and avoiding SMS when another option exists. Binance lists passkeys and authenticator apps as alternatives to SMS. These are vendor recommendations; the best choice also depends on the methods your exchange supports for withdrawals, security changes, and recovery.
Recovery planning for lost devices
Security is not complete until you can recover without weakening it. Before removing a device:
- Enroll a second passkey or compatible security key if the exchange allows it.
- Confirm that the authenticator app can be transferred or restored, and store its backup information offline or in another protected location.
- Verify the email account and recovery routes still work.
- Record the exchange’s official account-recovery process and support channel; do not rely on a search ad or an unsolicited message.
- Keep withdrawal addresses and their asset/network details in a private record so you can recognize a legitimate destination after recovery.
Do not create extra recovery copies in places an attacker can access. A recovery code is effectively a key: anyone who obtains it may be able to bypass the control it was intended to protect.
Monitor the account and respond to suspected compromise
Turn on account-activity and security alerts, then review active sessions, devices, API keys, and recent withdrawals on a schedule. Binance recommends unique passwords, email security, anti-phishing checks, account-activity monitoring, and use of official apps and websites. Kraken similarly recommends reviewing sessions and devices and using its official sign-in route.
If you see an unfamiliar login, address change, API key, password reset, or withdrawal:
- Stop interacting with the suspicious message, caller, or remote-access request.
- Open the exchange through the official app or a bookmark you created yourself.
- Use the platform’s emergency account-disable or lock function if available. Binance’s help guidance says to disable the account from its official site or app and contact official support when suspicious activity appears.
- Secure the linked email account from a trusted device, revoke unknown sessions, and change its password.
- Revoke unknown API keys, remove unfamiliar devices, and inspect allowlist changes.
- Contact official support through the channel shown inside the legitimate app or site. Never pay an “agent” or provide credentials to speed up recovery.
- Document timestamps, transaction IDs, addresses, and notifications for the exchange and, where appropriate, law-enforcement or a regulated adviser.
Act quickly, but do not approve a new passkey, address, or withdrawal merely because someone claims it will “secure” the account. A legitimate support process will not require your seed phrase, passkey, one-time code, or remote control of your device.

Quick Recap
Common setup mistakes
- Protecting only the login: Trading, funding, API, and security-setting controls may be separate.
- Adding an address without checking the network: Asset and network mismatches can make a transfer fail or become unrecoverable.
- Assuming all 48-hour holds are the same: Coinbase consumer, Coinbase Exchange, and Binance describe different products and timing rules.
- Disabling the allowlist during an emergency: The change may itself be delayed, as Coinbase documents for its consumer feature.
- Keeping every recovery method on one phone: Loss or compromise of that device can remove all access at once.
- Trusting search results or support callers: Use the official app, a self-created bookmark, and in-app support routes.
- Enabling convenience withdrawals without reading the trade-off: Binance’s one-step option can remove 2FA from a small withdrawal to an allowlisted address.
- Believing an allowlist guarantees safety: It does not protect a compromised receiving wallet or make a dishonest or hacked exchange safe.
A maintenance checklist
- Email has a unique password, strong 2FA or a passkey, reviewed recovery routes, and no unknown sessions.
- The exchange has at least one phishing-resistant passkey where supported.
- A separately protected authenticator or other recovery method is available if the platform permits it.
- Sign-in, trading, funding, withdrawal, API, and security-setting protections have been checked individually.
- Allowlisted addresses were copied from the receiving service and verified for both asset and network.
- Each address’s activation date and stated hold period are recorded.
- Alerts, active sessions, devices, API keys, and recent transactions are reviewed regularly.
- Devices are updated and protected with screen locks; unexpected remote-access requests are rejected.
- Official disable and support procedures are known before an incident occurs.
