Most enameled cast-iron pots do not need traditional seasoning. Their glass-like enamel surface is not bare iron, so don’t coat the pot with oil and bake it as you would a traditional cast-iron skillet. Follow the care instructions for your exact pot: manufacturers can differ, and Staub’s guide includes a limited recommendation to brush its cast-iron cookware with oil at intervals.
Does an enameled cast-iron pot need seasoning?
Usually, no. The enamel is a protective, glass-like coating; it is different from exposed cast iron, which is commonly seasoned with baked-on oil. Le Creuset UK says its cast-iron products are sealed with enamel and do not need seasoning. Lodge likewise distinguishes its porcelain-enamel surface from traditional seasoning. Read the instructions for your specific product, particularly if its interior is dark or textured.

There is some brand-specific variation. Staub’s care guidance includes brushing its cast-iron product with cooking oil at intervals. Treat that as guidance for the relevant Staub cookware, not as a universal seasoning routine for every enameled pot. Do not automatically oil and bake an enameled pot unless its maker instructs you to.

- Let it cool fully. Do not put a hot pot in cold water: a sudden temperature change can damage or crack the enamel.
- Wash gently. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge or brush. Avoid metal scouring pads and abrasive tools.
- Rinse and dry thoroughly. Dry the pot before putting it away, including around the rim.
Hand washing can help preserve the finish’s appearance. Some Le Creuset cast-iron products are dishwasher-safe, but dishwasher suitability varies by model and components; check your own product’s instructions before using one.

How to remove stuck-on food or stains
Start with a soak
Cover stuck-on food with warm, soapy water and let it soak. Le Creuset suggests about 15–20 minutes in its cleaning guidance. Wipe the softened residue away with a soft sponge or brush.
For stubborn residue
For tougher food residue, Le Creuset suggests simmering water with one or two tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes. Let the pot cool, then wipe it with a soft sponge. For persistent stains or oil residue, the company names its Cast Iron Cookware Cleaner, Bar Keepers Friend, or a baking-soda paste. These are optional approaches for stubborn marks, not necessary for routine washing. Follow the cleaner’s label and your pot maker’s directions, and avoid making abrasive scrubbing a regular habit.

How to use the pot without damaging the enamel
- Heat gradually. Use low to medium heat for ordinary cooking rather than turning the burner straight to high.
- Do not heat it empty on high. Staub specifically warns against this; Le Creuset also cautions against rapid heating and high heat.
- Check oven limits for the whole pot. The lid, knob, or handles may have a lower temperature limit than the iron body. Use the manual for your exact model.
- Protect surfaces. Set hot cookware on a trivet or other heat-resistant protection.
How to store an enameled pot
Store the pot clean and completely dry in a dry cupboard, away from steam. If you stack or nest cookware, felt protectors can cushion the pieces and help prevent scratches.
Le Creuset says its nonporous enamel permits refrigerator or freezer food storage, provided the appliance and cookware can safely support the loaded pot. This is manufacturer-specific guidance; check your own pot’s instructions before storing food in it that way.

What to check when care advice conflicts
Instructions can differ by brand and model, so compare the guidance for the pot you own rather than applying a bare-iron routine to all enamel cookware. Check:
- the exact brand and model, and whether the interior is smooth or textured;
- whether the maker recommends any oil use;
- whether that model is dishwasher-safe; and
- the oven temperature limits for the body, lid, knob, and handles.
The product manual takes precedence over general advice. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a durability or cleaning-performance ranking among brands.
