To search the web by image, upload the picture or paste its URL into Google Lens, Bing Visual Search or TinEye. Google and Bing can identify objects and show similar images or pages that use them; TinEye is especially useful for finding indexed copies and comparing image versions. No single service searches the entire web, so try another service when the first one comes up short. A match or early result is a lead—not proof of who created an image or where it first appeared.
Choose the search that fits your goal
“Search by image” can mean several things: identifying an object, finding visually similar pictures, locating pages that contain a particular image, or tracing versions of an image. These services overlap, but they do not answer every question in the same way.

Google says Lens compares objects in a picture with other images and uses relevance signals that can include words, language and host-page metadata. Think of its results as ranked suggestions, not a complete list. Bing likewise returns possible matches, not a definitive account of an image’s history. TinEye says a URL search returns the same results as uploading the image, fetching the image from the address you provide.
Search by image on a computer
Google Lens
- Open Google Search and select “Search by image.”
- Choose an input method: upload the file, drag the image into the search box, or paste its image URL.
- Review the results for recognized objects, similar images and pages with the same or a similar image. Add a few descriptive words if the visual matches are too broad.
Google says Search by image works in most browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. If you are viewing an image on a website in Chrome, you can also right-click it and choose “Search with Google Lens.” That searches the image in context without first saving it.

Bing Visual Search
- Open Bing and go to Images.
- Select the camera icon.
- Upload or drag in an image, paste an image or URL, or use a webcam photo if that option is available.
- Inspect related images and pages that may use the picture; add context from the results page when useful.
On mobile, Bing Visual Search supports taking or uploading a photo. The available controls can differ by device and interface.
TinEye
- Open TinEye and provide the image by upload, drag and drop, clipboard paste or URL.
- Review the matching results and choose a sort such as “Best Match,” “Most Changed,” “Biggest Image,” “Newest” or “Oldest.”
- Apply a domain, image-collection or stock-photo filter if it helps narrow the results.
“Oldest” means the earliest result TinEye found in its index. It does not establish when the image was created or who made it.
Search from an Android phone or iPhone
Google documents Lens in the Google app and Chrome app on Android and iOS. Open the image-search or Lens feature in the app, then take a photo or upload an existing one. Where the interface offers region selection, select the part of the image you want to search; add words describing a visible object, text or setting to refine the results. App labels and controls can vary, so follow the current labels shown in your version of the app.
For Bing Visual Search on a phone, open Bing Images, tap the camera control, then take or upload a photo. If you already have the picture as a file, using that file can be more convenient than photographing a screen, which can introduce glare, perspective distortion and extra background detail.

Get better matches with a deliberate workflow
- Start with the clearest copy. Use the original or highest-quality image available. Compression, blur, overlays and watermarks can make matching harder.
- Search the relevant part. If one object or region matters more than the rest, crop the image first or select that region where the service allows it. Avoid cropping so tightly that distinctive context disappears.
- Look at different result types. A visually similar image is not the same as a page containing the image. Check both when your goal is to identify a source or find another use of the picture.
- Try a second service. If one search returns little, try another—especially for diagrams, logos, heavily edited images or screenshots. Services use different indexes and matching systems.
- Add a few precise words. Combine the image with a visible phrase, object, location or context. Specific terms are more likely to narrow results than a vague description such as “interesting picture.”
- Open the promising pages. Read captions and surrounding text, check publication dates, and compare the claims with independent sources before deciding what the image depicts or where it came from.
Trace an image’s history without overclaiming
Google’s “About this image” can, in supported regions, show when Google first saw an image or a visually similar version, other pages using it and earlier appearances. Treat first-seen timing as approximate: it describes what Google’s systems observed, not necessarily the image’s creation or first publication. Image metadata can also be changed by editing tools.
TinEye’s sorting and filtering tools can help you find variants and leads. An earliest-found match is still only the earliest match in TinEye’s index. Neither an early search result nor a first-seen date proves authorship, licensing or original publication. Follow the result to its page and look for corroborating evidence before making those claims.
Know what image search can miss
Search services return matches available to their indexes, and their systems can rank an unrelated or merely similar image. A lack of results does not show that a picture has never appeared online. TinEye explicitly says it returns matches in its index; the same practical limitation matters when using any search index.
A 2022 preliminary study by Shawn M. Jones and Diane Oyen examined 200 abstract images and 199 natural images from Wikimedia Commons across Baidu, Bing, Google and Yandex. It reported that retrievability varied by image category, with natural photographs easier to retrieve than abstract images in some comparisons. Those are sample counts and findings from that study—not a general accuracy rate, nor a result that can be assumed to describe every current search.

Consider privacy before uploading
- Google: Google says it may store image URLs searched. Check the applicable privacy terms before submitting sensitive material.
- Bing: Microsoft says photos submitted to Bing Visual Search may be used to improve Bing image-processing services.
- TinEye: TinEye says it does not save submitted search images or add them to its index.

Common problems and fixes
The service finds similar images but not the page I need
Similar-image results answer a different question from pages containing an image. Inspect both result types, try another service and search a distinctive visible phrase or subject alongside the image.

Check that the address points directly to an accessible image rather than a webpage containing it. TinEye fetches the image at the supplied address; if that address cannot deliver the image, save the image and upload it instead.

The results identify the wrong object or context
Try selecting or cropping the relevant region and adding accurate descriptive words. Treat machine interpretation as a lead, not a conclusion; Microsoft specifically warns that AI-assisted interpretation may make mistakes.
No matches appear
Use a clearer file, search a crop, and try a second service. A missing match can mean the image is not in that service’s index or is difficult for its matching system to recognize; it is not proof the image is unpublished.
The oldest result seems later than expected
Search indexes only establish when a service found a result, not the image’s true origin date. Compare page context, dates and independent sources; do not treat a sort order or first-seen estimate as authorship evidence.

Can I search by an image URL instead of uploading a file?
Yes. Google, Bing and TinEye support image URLs. Use a direct image address when possible; if it does not load for the service, upload a local copy instead.
Do I need to buy a camera or scanner?
No. These services accept existing image files or URLs, and phone apps can use an existing photo. A new device is not required.
Can a reverse image search prove copyright ownership?
No. Search results can help locate copies and possible sources, but they do not establish ownership or permission to reuse an image. Verify those separately with the rights holder or reliable documentation.
