You can search a Mac photo or video collection offline with CLIP, provided an app first builds a local index of image or video-frame embeddings and has its model files available. After setup, the app can encode a text query such as “sunset at the beach” and rank matching local images or sampled video frames. Whether it can read your Apple Photos library directly, which formats it supports, and where it stores its index depends on the specific app.
How local CLIP search works
CLIP-style search connects text and images in a shared representation. An app processes each image with an image encoder and stores its resulting vector, or embedding, alongside local information such as the file path. When you search, it encodes your words with the text encoder and compares that query vector with the stored image vectors, then ranks likely matches. The precise model, preprocessing, vector dimensions, and ranking method vary by implementation; they are not universal CLIP settings. Sharkfin’s project documentation describes one local image-search architecture.

- Choose what to index. A tool may scan a folder of files or work with media you select. Do not assume that a CLIP app can automatically access every item in an Apple Photos library.
- Build the index. The app processes supported images and saves embeddings and related local data. This can take time and use storage; there is no general indexing-time or index-size figure that applies to every Mac and collection.
- Search the index. Enter a natural-language description, such as “blue car at night” or “kids playing in snow.” The app compares the query with the items it indexed and displays ranked matches.
Searching videos requires frame sampling
A video file is not automatically searchable by its visual contents just because an app can open it. The app needs to select frames, encode them as images, and associate matches with the source clip. One local media-search project documents shot-based keyframe extraction and results that can point to moments within a clip. Its documentation is an example of that approach, not a guarantee that other tools return timestamps or use the same sampling strategy.
Before relying on video search, check whether results identify only the video file or a useful moment within it, and how the app chooses frames. Sparse sampling may miss a brief event; more frequent sampling can mean more processing and stored data. The exact trade-off depends on the app.

Can you search offline?
Usually, “offline” means the model runs on your Mac and searches a local index after setup—not necessarily that installation needs no internet. The Media Search Agent project says its model files download on first run and that the app then operates offline. Apple’s Core ML overview explains that strictly on-device model execution does not require a network connection. Download the required model before disconnecting, and confirm that the specific app and release do not send queries or media to a remote service.
Local search may still create derived data—including embeddings and thumbnails—in addition to the original files. Check where the app stores that data and whether you can remove or rebuild the index. If you use an experimental project, keep your original media backed up; the Media Search Agent README describes that project as pre-1.0 experimental software.

Apple Photos search versus a custom CLIP index
Apple’s September 2019 privacy brief describes Photos search finding content in images using on-device scene classification. That means a custom CLIP index is not a prerequisite for all content-based photo search. The brief is dated, however, and does not establish the current feature set or provide a current comparison with third-party tools. Apple’s Photos privacy brief is the source for that historical description.
A custom local index may be useful if you want a particular natural-language workflow, want to search folders outside Photos, or want a tool that handles video frames. There is no controlled comparison in the cited sources establishing which approach is more relevant, faster, more private, or broader in format support. Compare the actual app and workflow rather than assuming one is categorically better.

Does a CLIP app work with an Apple Photos library?
Not necessarily. Some workflows index a user-chosen folder or files the user exports; others may accept selected assets. Confirm the exact route for the app you plan to use before treating it as a search tool for your Photos library.
Apple’s Core Spotlight documentation describes indexing content belonging to an app and makes the app responsible for maintaining its index; it does not grant an app blanket access to a person’s Photos library. Apple’s Core Spotlight documentation explains that distinction. Check whether an app searches selected Photos assets, exported files, or a folder you choose.

What to check before choosing a tool
- Mac and macOS support: Verify the requirements for the exact app release; they are project-specific.
- Media formats: Confirm which image and video formats it indexes, rather than assuming support from a file opening successfully.
- Photos access: Find out whether it works with selected assets, exports, or folders, and whether it indexes the library directly.
- Model and network behavior: Check whether model files must be downloaded and whether search and inference remain local afterward.
- Storage: Find the location of models, embeddings, thumbnails, and other generated index data.
- Video results: Check whether results include a timestamp or only point to the clip, and what frame-selection strategy the app uses.
- Project status: Review the release and maintenance information, especially if the tool labels itself experimental.
Apple’s Core ML image-classification sample demonstrates offline image inference as a platform capability, but it is an image-segmentation sample—not a ready-made CLIP search app. The cited projects show that local semantic search on a Mac is feasible; they do not establish a universal setup recipe or guarantee results for every library.

Why results can miss what you remember
Search quality depends on the chosen model, how you phrase a query, which files were indexed, and—when searching video—which frames were sampled. Ranking thresholds also vary by implementation. A missing result may mean the relevant file was not indexed or the event was not represented by a sampled frame; it does not prove that the moment is absent from the collection. Try a more direct description and check that the relevant files were included in the index.
