There is no documented single search box that sends one query to Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and arXiv at once. To search them together, run a shared concept query separately on each service, adjust it to that service’s search syntax, then compare and deduplicate the records. This parallel workflow combines broad scholarly discovery, citation navigation, and arXiv’s fielded preprint search without assuming the services cover or rank papers in the same way.
1. Build a concept query before opening the search pages
Write the question in ordinary language, then list its central terms, synonyms, technical vocabulary, and any known author or venue names. Keep a short core query you can adapt for all three services; save alternate terms to try separately rather than assuming every platform interprets a long Boolean expression identically.

If the subject is unfamiliar, Google Scholar recommends using secondary sources to identify terminology. From a relevant paper, follow its references to find earlier work and use “Cited by” to find newer or more specific work. Google Scholar Search Help
2. Run the search separately on each service

Choose the right date control
In Google Scholar, results normally appear by relevance. “Since Year” limits results to recent work while keeping relevance order; “Sort by date” puts the newest additions first. These are different ways to prioritize results, not interchangeable publication-date measures. Google Scholar Search Help

For arXiv, distinguish a paper’s initial submission from later versions and updates. Its API’s submitted-date filter concerns arXiv submissions, while an article’s publication date in another venue may be different. arXiv API User’s Manual
3. Compare the results without treating the rankings as equivalent
- Relevance and recall: Google Scholar says its ranking considers document text, publication venue, author, and citation count and recency. Semantic Scholar and arXiv use their own search ordering. - Scope and document type: Scholar indexes journal and conference papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts, technical reports, and other scholarly material. Semantic Scholar is a scientific-literature discovery service, with publication-type and field filters in its API. arXiv searches its own repository, so a missing arXiv result does not establish that a paper is absent from scholarly literature generally. - Full-text access: Scholar may show PDF or HTML links, library subscriptions, “All versions,” and related-paper links. These are discovery routes, not guarantees that a full text is freely available; reading a publisher version may require a subscription. Check publisher, repository, library, and preprint copies. - Version and publication status: Check an arXiv record’s version and date, and whether it lists a journal reference. A preprint may have been updated or published elsewhere; decide which version your question requires. arXiv API User’s Manual
4. Deduplicate records and keep a reproducible search log
The same work can appear in more than one service or in multiple versions. Compare titles and authors, then use a DOI or arXiv identifier where available; also check whether records refer to a preprint, an updated manuscript, or a published version. Do not count different records as different studies until you have checked the underlying work.

For a search another person can repeat, record:
- the platform and date searched;
- the exact query used on that platform, including any field prefixes or quotation marks;
- date, category, author, or other filters;
- how you screened results and handled duplicates or versions.
Keep separate query strings in the log. A single complex string copied across all three services can silently change meaning: Semantic Scholar’s website does not support Boolean operators or wildcards, while arXiv does support Boolean construction. Semantic Scholar FAQ arXiv API User’s Manual

Google Scholar’s cap and update timing
Google Scholar’s undated help page, checked in 2026, says it can show up to 1,000 results for a query and cannot provide bulk access to records. It says new papers are normally added several times a week, while some corrections to existing records can take six to nine months to a year or longer. Semantic Scholar website search is not its API
The no-Boolean and no-wildcard limitation applies to Semantic Scholar’s website search as described in its FAQ. Space out arXiv API calls
If you are making repeated arXiv API requests, the official manual recommends waiting three seconds between calls. Use a focused query and the documented pagination or sorting controls rather than retrieving large result sets without a specific need. arXiv API User’s Manual
