These PDF-specific steps are documented for Chromebook Gallery; Google’s general Lens instructions for phones and desktop cover image search, not the same PDF workflow.
How do I search a PDF with Google Lens?
- On your Chromebook, open the PDF in Files, or open the Gallery app and select Open file.
- Choose the PDF. Google’s instructions apply to PDFs supported by Gallery.
- Select Search with Google Lens at the top of the window.
- Select the region of the PDF you want Lens to examine. Choose a specific image, diagram, or other visual area rather than expecting Lens to search every page as a document.
- Select Search with Google Lens again to run the search on that selection.
Google documents this sequence in its Chromebook Gallery Lens instructions. Gallery’s listed uses also include translating a PDF, copying text to fill forms, searching with images from downloaded files, and getting homework help.
What does Lens find in a PDF?
Lens searches the selected content visually. Google describes Lens as comparing objects in an image with other images and returning visually similar images and related web content. Similarity and relevance help rank results; words, language, and metadata on the sites hosting images can also affect ranking. Treat results as useful matches or related material, not a guaranteed exact identification or a full-document keyword search. See Google’s explanation of how Lens works.
Is Lens the same as searching PDF text?
No. The Gallery workflow submits a selected region for a visual search. If your goal is to make otherwise inaccessible PDF text available to a screen reader, ChromeOS has a separate text-extraction feature in Chrome PDF Viewer. Google says that feature is on by default for screen-reader users; it is an accessibility workflow, not the Gallery Lens search. Follow Google’s PDF text-extraction instructions for that task.

Can I use Google Lens on a PDF on a phone or another computer?
Google provides general image-search instructions for Android, iOS, and desktop. Those pages explain searching with an image, but they do not establish the Chromebook Gallery steps for PDFs on those platforms. For a PDF, the documented way to select a region and send it to Lens is Chromebook Gallery.
