To screenshot thousands of URLs without flooding a browser or target sites, put each URL into a durable queue, limit how many captures run at once, pace submissions, and record each result separately. A batch endpoint can simplify submission, but it does not necessarily start every capture immediately or count quota by batch. The right pace depends on both your screenshot provider’s limits and the behavior and policies of the sites you capture.
Choose between running Playwright yourself and using a hosted API
With self-managed automation, Playwright provides the browser capture primitives; your application supplies the batch pipeline. A hosted screenshot API can take browser operations off your hands, but its batch size, rate limits, quota accounting, retries, and result delivery are provider-specific.

| Approach | What it handles | What you still need to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Self-managed Playwright | Browser navigation and screenshot capture, including viewport or full-page captures and file or buffer output. Playwright screenshot guide | Queueing, concurrency and pacing, persistence, retries, output naming, logs, browser resources, and storage. |
| Hosted batch API | Potentially manages browser execution and accepts multiple URLs in a submission. Confirm each provider’s behavior and limits. | Provider-specific quota and rate accounting, queue delay, result retention, completion notifications, error details, and pricing. |
For a documented provider-specific example, ScreenshotRun says its batch endpoint counts each URL against its monthly quota, applies rate limits per URL, may queue work when a submitted batch exceeds current per-minute capacity, and supports polling or per-screenshot webhooks. Those details are specific to ScreenshotRun’s batch documentation, not a general rule for screenshot APIs.

- Normalize and deduplicate inputs. Validate URL syntax, remove exact duplicates, and decide whether URLs that differ only by query parameters or fragments should remain distinct. Avoid using raw, untrusted URLs as file paths.
- Persist jobs before capture. Store a stable job ID, input URL, queued status, attempt count, and creation time. Save state changes as jobs are claimed, completed, or failed so a restart does not erase progress.
- Set concurrency and pace separately. Concurrency controls how many captures are in flight. Pacing controls how quickly new work starts. Apply a global cap and, where appropriate, a per-domain scheduler so one host does not receive a burst just because your workers are available.
- Capture one URL per job. Record the final URL after redirects, navigation outcome, capture settings, and screenshot location. Classify failures rather than treating every non-success as retryable.
- Retry only transient failures. Respect
Retry-Afterif returned. Use bounded exponential backoff with jitter for temporary errors; do not endlessly retry invalid URLs or blocked pages. Make retries idempotent so a restarted or repeated job does not corrupt results. - Monitor and adjust. Track completion and timeout rates, blocked responses, queue delay, memory, browser crashes, image sizes, and API quota use. If errors rise, slow or pause the queue and investigate whether the cause is the target site, browser pressure, or provider throttling.
Start with a small representative sample and conservative concurrency. There is no universal safe requests-per-minute figure or concurrency setting: target mix, capture mode, browser capacity, and provider plan all matter. Check site terms and access policies before capturing at scale, then tune based on actual responses.
Choose capture settings and output format
Viewport or full page
Use a viewport screenshot when the initial visible screen is what you need to compare. Use full-page capture when the full scrollable document matters. Playwright documents both options in its screenshot guide. Full-page captures can take more time and storage on long pages, so test representative URLs before committing to a large run.

Image type and scale
Choose an image format based on fidelity and storage requirements. Playwright supports configurable screenshot output, including type, quality, scale, clipping, file paths, and buffers; consult its Page.screenshot API reference for option details. Its scale setting can preserve one output pixel per CSS pixel or use device scale to produce more pixels on high-density displays. Keep the scale consistent if images will be compared.

Use a manifest, not filenames made from URLs
Generate deterministic filenames from a stable internal job ID or URL identifier. Keep a sidecar record or database row for each capture with the input URL, final redirected URL, capture time, navigation status or error, viewport, full-page setting, image format, and output path. This makes it possible to find, audit, and regenerate a result without exposing arbitrary URL characters in paths.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF; for a large workload, put requests behind your own paced queue and inspect the response headers to distinguish page outcomes and billing.
Example using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its clean-shot flow accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report page verdict and billing in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Plan for rate limits, reliability, and cost
Keep provider limits separate from target-site behavior
A provider’s API limit or monthly quota controls requests to that service. The target website can independently throttle, block, or fail navigation. A batch submission is a convenience for sending work, not proof that every URL starts at once or that usage is counted once per batch. ScreenshotRun’s documented behavior, for example, is per URL for quota and rate accounting, with possible queueing and per-screenshot completion notifications; confirm current terms with any provider you consider.
Make costs and throughput observable
Before scaling up, verify whether usage is counted per submitted URL, attempted capture, or successful screenshot; whether retries consume quota; how long results remain available; and whether webhooks or polling are available. Track actual completion rate and queue delay on your workload rather than assuming a provider’s maximum batch submission size is its concurrent processing capacity.

For self-managed Playwright, include the cost of operating browser processes, storage, and the engineering needed for scheduling and recovery. For a hosted service, compare current plan pricing and quota terms against expected volume. The cited documentation does not establish a universal throughput, price, safe capture pace, or concurrency target.
Troubleshoot common batch failures
- Provider returns a rate-limit response: Reduce submission pace and concurrency, observe any
Retry-Aftervalue, and retry with bounded backoff. Do not immediately resubmit an entire failed batch if only some URLs failed. - Target pages show blocks or challenges: Pause or reduce captures for the affected domain, check its access policies, and avoid repeated retries of blocked pages. Provider acceptance of a job does not mean the target will permit the visit.
- Jobs disappear after a restart: Persist queued, in-progress, and completed state outside worker memory. On restart, reconcile stale in-progress records and retry only those jobs under an idempotent job key.
- Images are missing or overwritten: Use a unique stable identifier per job and store output paths in the manifest. Do not derive filenames directly from URLs or have concurrent workers write to the same destination.
- Browser memory climbs or workers crash: Lower concurrency, inspect full-page captures and image dimensions, and recycle browser workers as part of your operational design. The right threshold depends on your pages and machine; benchmark a representative sample.
- Many captures time out: Separate navigation failures from capture failures in logs. Check whether the issue is concentrated on one domain, whether the timeout is too short for those pages, or whether resource pressure is delaying all workers.
- Batch submission succeeds but results are delayed: Check whether the provider queues work, and use its documented polling or webhook mechanism rather than assuming submission means completion. ScreenshotRun documents both patterns for its service.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use one giant batch request?
No. Even if an API accepts a large submission, work may be queued or limited per URL. Smaller controlled scheduling units make it easier to pause, resume, and isolate errors.
Does a screenshot API rate limit protect the websites I capture?
No. The provider’s limit governs your use of its service; target sites may apply separate policies and traffic controls. Schedule responsibly for each domain.
How many URLs should I run concurrently?
There is no evidence-supported universal number. Start conservatively with representative URLs, then adjust using failure rates, queue delay, resource usage, and the provider’s current plan limits.
How should I handle redirects?
Keep both the requested URL and the final URL after redirects in the per-job record. That preserves what was requested and what the browser actually captured.
