To capture both states reliably, control the product’s inventory in a Shopify test store, select the same variant and location for each capture, and use the same browser, viewport, and screenshot scope. Capture the sold-out state, change that variant to an available quantity, then capture again. The result is a useful before-and-after record without confusing inventory changes with differences in the browser or page.
Set up controlled inventory in a test store
Use a Shopify theme test store and deliberately set inventory for the product and its variants rather than relying on whatever happens to be in stock. Shopify’s test-theme guidance recommends including a sold-out example and varying quantities across variants: Shopify: testing a theme.

- Choose a product with the options you need to demonstrate, such as size or color.
- Set one variant to zero or otherwise sold out, and set another to an available quantity. If you need to show the same variant in both states, record its initial quantity so you can restore it later.
- If the store uses multiple locations, check the quantity at the location relevant to the storefront. Shopify’s examples show that a variant may be available at some locations and sold out at others.
- If you imported inventory by CSV in a multi-location test environment, verify quantities manually: Shopify notes that imported quantities default to zero in this situation.
Keep a note of the product, variant, location or market, and quantity used for each capture. Availability can be location- and variant-specific, so a screenshot without that context may not show the state you intended.

Capture the sold-out and available states
Use the same selection and storefront context
Open the product page in the test storefront and select the exact variant you want to document. Confirm the location or market context if it affects availability. Shopify’s section-rendering example bases its “In stock” or “Out of stock” label on the selected variant—or the first available variant—and refreshes section content when product options change: Shopify section rendering.

Capture each state
- With the chosen variant sold out, wait for the storefront’s availability label and purchase controls to settle, then capture the page or product panel.
- Change the inventory for that same variant to an available quantity in the test store.
- Reload or reselect the variant as needed so the storefront reflects the updated inventory, then verify the visible state before capturing.
- Use the same variant, location or market, viewport, browser environment, and screenshot scope for the second capture.
This sequence is a practical way to create a controlled comparison based on Shopify’s documented inventory behavior; Shopify does not prescribe this exact before-and-after screenshot workflow.
Capture the whole page or just the product panel
For a record of the full storefront experience, capture the whole page. If the evidence you need is the stock label, price, variant selector, and purchase button, a screenshot of the product component avoids unrelated page content. Playwright supports both page and element screenshots, as well as screenshot-based visual comparisons: Playwright screenshots and Playwright visual comparisons.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://your-test-store.example/products/example', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle'
});
// Capture the full product page in the sold-out state.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'product-sold-out.png', fullPage: true });
// Or capture only the product panel instead:
// await page.locator('[data-product-panel]').screenshot({ path: 'product-sold-out-panel.png' });
await browser.close();
Replace the example URL and selector with your test storefront’s actual values. Run the capture again after changing the inventory to produce the available-state image. For automated visual tests, Playwright can compare a new screenshot with a reference image; keep the baseline generation and comparison environment consistent.

Keep the comparison repeatable
The intended difference is inventory availability, not rendering noise. Hold the product, selected variant, location or market, browser and operating environment, viewport, and capture scope constant. Playwright warns that screenshot rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment rather than comparing images made on different machines or browser setups.
Dynamic content can also obscure the change. Playwright supports screenshot styles and masking for elements that vary between runs. Use those controls only for irrelevant changing elements; do not mask the stock label, variant selection, or other evidence the screenshot is meant to show.

What “back in stock” means on the page
In this workflow, “back in stock” means the product or selected variant has moved from unavailable to available, and the storefront reflects that state. A back-in-stock notification signup is a separate feature: it may come from a particular theme or app. The Shopify material cited here documents inventory states and rendering, not a universal notification-form setup. Check the store’s specific theme or app documentation before assuming such a form exists or describing how to configure it.
Troubleshooting
- The page still says out of stock after inventory changes. Confirm the quantity for the selected variant at the relevant location, then reload or reselect the variant so the storefront refreshes its rendered state.
- A CSV-imported test product shows zero inventory. In a multi-location test environment, Shopify says imported quantities default to zero. Adjust inventory manually and check each relevant location.
- The wrong variant’s status appears. Explicitly select the intended option before capture; the page may initially display the first available variant’s status.
- The two screenshots differ beyond the stock state. Check that the browser version, operating system, headless mode, viewport, power conditions, and screenshot scope match. Also identify dynamic content that needs to be controlled or masked.
- A notification signup is missing. Verify whether the store’s current theme or installed app provides one. Its presence is not established as a universal Shopify behavior by the cited inventory and rendering documentation.
