To capture only what is currently visible in your active browser tab, use the browser’s visible-area or selected-area screenshot—not a full-page capture. In Firefox, choose Take Screenshot and then Save visible. In Microsoft Edge, choose Screenshot and select the page viewport. The steps differ in Chrome: the Chrome material covered here documents an extension API, not a universal built-in screenshot command.
“Only the active tab” can mean either the visible page area or the whole webpage in that tab. Those are different captures: the whole page may include content below the fold. The instructions below make that distinction explicit.
What “only the active browser tab” means
A browser screenshot can capture a few different things. For this task, the useful distinction is between the visible viewport—the portion of the webpage currently shown in the tab—and the full page, including content further down. A selected-area capture is different again: it saves only the rectangle you choose, which can be smaller than the viewport.
- Visible viewport: captures the page area currently on screen, without the rest of the webpage below the fold.
- Selected area: captures the portion of the page you drag over. To save the visible page, select the viewport edges as closely as practical.
- Full page: captures content beyond the current viewport as well. Do not choose it if you want only what is currently visible.
Browser controls, browser chrome such as the tab strip, and the webpage itself are not necessarily captured in the same way by every tool. The Firefox and Edge instructions here concern screenshots of page content; they do not promise a picture of the browser’s tabs or other desktop windows.

Firefox: save the visible page
Mozilla’s Firefox instructions, marked last updated June 15, 2026, describe a built-in screenshot tool with separate choices for a selected region, a page part highlighted under the pointer, the full page, and the currently visible part. For an active-tab viewport screenshot, choose Save visible, not Save full page. See Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions.
- Open the tab and scroll until the part of the page you want is on screen.
- Right-click an empty part of the webpage and select Take Screenshot. If the context menu is inconvenient, use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- Choose Save visible to capture the current viewport. If you instead choose a selected region, drag around only the area you need.
- Save or copy the result using the controls shown by Firefox.
Firefox also offers Save full page. That option is useful for a page you want to preserve from top to bottom, but it includes off-screen content and therefore does not meet the visible-only goal.
Microsoft Edge: select the page viewport
Microsoft documents Edge’s Screenshot feature as supporting full-page and selected-area captures. The documented full-page route uses Ctrl + Shift + S, followed by Capture full page. For a visible-only result, use the selected-area choice and mark the viewport rather than choosing full-page capture. Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version; its page does not establish that every version has a separate control explicitly named “visible area.” See Microsoft’s Edge Screenshot feature page.
- Bring the target tab to the front and position the page so the desired content is visible.
- Open Edge’s Screenshot feature. If the shortcut is supported in your version, press Ctrl + Shift + S.
- Choose the selected-area capture option and drag a rectangle around the webpage viewport. Avoid Capture full page if you do not want content below the fold.
- Review the selection before saving or copying it.
If the feature or label differs on your device, check the controls in your installed Edge version rather than assuming an option called “Save visible” is present. The documented workflow supports selected-area capture; it does not establish identical labels across releases.

Chrome: what the documented method does and does not establish
The Chrome documentation covered for this guide is for extension developers. Chrome’s tabCapture API can start a capture of the currently active tab after an extension is invoked, while the Tabs API documentation describes permissions and restrictions. These are building blocks for extension behavior, not proof of a universal built-in screenshot menu or shortcut for all Chrome users. If you need a one-off image in Chrome, use a capture feature or extension actually available in your installed browser, and verify whether it captures the visible viewport, a selected region, or the entire page. The API references do not provide a reliable end-user click path to promise here. If you are building an extension, use the active-tab capture API according to Chrome’s permission and invocation rules; do not treat the API name as a ready-made screenshot button.
Choose the capture scope before saving

To make a screenshot of a particular state—such as a menu opened or a section expanded—put the page in that state first. A screenshot records what the capture tool sees at capture time; it does not preserve an interactive page.
Check the saved image
Before sharing, open the saved file and confirm it includes the intended content and excludes what you did not want. For a visible-area capture, check the edges for cut-off text or controls. A selected rectangle can omit a narrow strip along an edge if it was dragged imprecisely. If the page had to be scrolled to show the relevant content, the image represents that scrolled viewport, not the whole page.

- Confirm whether you saved the visible viewport, a selected rectangle, or the full page.
- Make sure the page was in the right scroll position and state.
- Check that the result does not include unrelated material within the selected rectangle.
- If the file is not the intended scope, repeat the capture with the correct choice rather than cropping a full-page image and assuming it is equivalent.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot contains the whole webpage
You likely selected a full-page option. In Firefox, use Save visible instead of Save full page. In Edge, use the selected-area option and mark the viewport instead of Capture full page.
The image includes only part of the visible page
A selected-area capture saves only the rectangle you draw. Repeat it and drag around the whole viewport. In Firefox, choose Save visible when you want the entire current visible area without drawing a rectangle.
The shortcut does not open a screenshot tool
Firefox documents Ctrl + Shift + S for Windows/Linux and Command + Shift + S for macOS. Edge documents the Ctrl-based shortcut for its feature, but availability and behavior vary by version, device, and market. Use the browser’s menus or feature controls if the shortcut does not work; do not assume the same shortcut is available in every browser or operating system.
You cannot find the same labels shown here
Feature availability and interface wording can change with browser version and device. Firefox’s documented choices include Save visible and Save full page; Microsoft does not say every Edge version labels a viewport option “visible area.” Look for the choice that describes a selected area, and distinguish it from full-page capture.

You want a Chrome screenshot but have no capture command
The Chrome references cited here cover extension APIs, not a universal user-facing screenshot menu. Check the tools installed in your own browser, and confirm their capture scope before using them. If you are developing an extension, consult the API documentation for invocation, permissions, and restrictions.

Does a screenshot of the active tab include the browser’s other tabs?
The Firefox and Edge workflows described here capture page content, not a view of all open tabs. The title’s “active tab” means the page selected for capture, not a picture of the browser interface.
Can I capture a page that requires my login?
The browser workflows operate on the page open in your browser. A remote screenshot service is different: it loads a URL itself, so do not assume it can see your local browser session or its private page state.
