Use a public, signed-out Income Tax Department help page whenever it answers your question. If you need an authenticated page, capture only the relevant viewport or element, mask sensitive fields before an AI agent receives the image, and inspect the actual screenshot. Avoid full-page captures of tax profiles and return screens unless essential: they can expose PAN, Aadhaar, contact, bank, income, and other personal details.
Why tax-portal screenshots need extra care
The Income Tax Department’s My Profile manual lists information that may appear in a profile, including PAN, Aadhaar, TAN, mobile number, email, address, bank and demat account details, representative information, and source-of-income details. Examples also include employer and business details, house-property addresses, co-owner information, and co-owners’ PAN or Aadhaar details. Treat profile and return pages as sensitive even if the part you need seems routine. See the My Profile manual.

- Start with public help content. Search the signed-out help pages for the instruction or error explanation you need. Use a logged-in dashboard, profile, return, AIS, or account page only when the public page is insufficient.
- Navigate to the exact information before capturing. Open the help article or non-sensitive error area, close unrelated tabs and dialogs, and avoid desktop-wide capture that could include notifications or another account. The Department’s co-browsing FAQ distinguishes the active browser view from whole-desktop screen sharing, which can expose notifications. Read the Co-Browser FAQs.
- Choose the smallest useful capture. Prefer one relevant element or the current viewport to a full-page screenshot. A full-page capture can bring unrelated parts of an authenticated page into view.
- Mask sensitive fields before the image reaches the agent. Use stable selectors for known identity, contact, and account fields. A mask applied only after the image has been sent does not protect the first transmission.
- Inspect the rendered image. Check for names, PAN or Aadhaar, phone and email, account and return data, OTPs, URL parameters, notifications, and unrelated records. Do not assume a selector covered every value or handled an unexpected layout.
- Limit retention and access. If you need to save the screenshot, use a neutral filename, restrict access, and delete it when the task is complete under your organization’s policy. Check the specific AI service’s data handling and retention settings.
Masking a page screenshot with Playwright
Playwright’s page screenshot API supports a mask list of locators. The selected elements receive an overlay over their bounding boxes in the screenshot. By default, a page screenshot captures the viewport; fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page. A locator screenshot targets a selected element and also accepts masks. If you need to send an error screenshot to support
The Department’s helpdesk email-format document instructs users to attach screenshots showing the error and lists taxpayer name, contact details, email, PAN, assessment or financial year, form, and problem details among query fields. The document is dated January 2022; verify the current support channel and instructions before sending. Preserve enough context to diagnose the error, but crop or mask unrelated identifiers. Open the helpdesk email-format document.

The Department’s co-browsing FAQ says a taxpayer must approve a request before an agent begins and can end the session. It describes co-browsing as limited to the active browser view, contrasting it with desktop screen sharing, and says most co-browsing software has masking for confidential data such as passwords. “Most” does not mean every tool or every field is masked. Ask what the session exposes and avoid disclosing secrets. This is guidance about the Department’s helpdesk co-browsing option, not an assurance about other AI agents. Read the Co-Browser FAQs.
What the portal privacy policy does—and does not—cover
The Income Tax Department privacy policy says the portal may collect visit metadata such as IP address, browser and operating-system type, visit date and time, and pages visited. It says the Department does not sell or trade information collected through the portal and does not share it with third parties for marketing purposes. It also notes that external sites have their own policies and users are responsible for keeping credentials confidential. These statements concern the Department’s portal; they do not establish how a separate AI service handles a screenshot you provide.
