Capture only the portal area the recipient needs, crop away unrelated information, and cover any remaining identifiers with a fully opaque mark. Save an edited copy, reopen it, and inspect the entire image before sharing. A screenshot can reveal more than a name: phone numbers, dates of birth, patient IDs, QR codes, appointments, browser tabs, notifications, and clinical details may all be visible.
Use the hospital’s requested sharing channel when it specifies one. Device controls vary by model and software version, so use the steps below as a guide and check the linked device instructions if a control is different.

Capture only the information the recipient needs
Open the hospital’s official app or website directly and sign in through its normal process. Do not include credentials or one-time passwords in the image. Navigate to the specific result, appointment, or issue you need to show, then take a regular screenshot of that view. Prefer a short screenshot when it provides enough context; a scrolling or full-page capture can reveal other records and details.
Government portal descriptions illustrate how much sensitive information may appear in patient services: e-Hospital lists digital lab reports, prescriptions, and diagnoses, and the NextGen eHospital privacy policy lists items such as vitals, medicines, investigations, diagnoses, advice, and discharge summaries. Take a screenshot on iPhone
- On an iPhone with Face ID, press the Side button and Volume Up at the same time, then release quickly. On a Touch ID iPhone with a side button, press Side and Home; on a model with a top button, press Top and Home.
- Tap the screenshot preview when it appears. Crop the image to the relevant part of the portal.
- Use Markup to cover identifiers that remain in the needed area with a solid, opaque mark. Save the edited image, then open it in Photos and inspect it.

Take a screenshot on Android
- On many Android phones, press Power and Volume Down at the same time. If that does not work, check the power menu for Screenshot or follow your phone manufacturer’s instructions.
- Open the screenshot preview or find the image in Photos or Gallery. Crop to the necessary portal content.
- Use the phone’s editor or Google Photos markup to cover remaining details with a solid, opaque mark. Save an edited copy, reopen it, and inspect the whole image.
Google documents scrolling screenshots on Android 12 and later on most scrollable screens, but device and app behavior can vary. What to crop or cover
Crop material outside the essential area. If a detail sits within the part you need to keep, cover it completely rather than relying on a translucent highlight, light blur, or loose scribble that may leave characters readable.
- Personal identifiers: name, phone number, email, date of birth, address, patient or registration number, ABHA number or other health ID, account name, and QR codes or barcodes.
- Context that can identify someone: hospital name where it could identify the person in context, appointment or visit number, browser tabs, notifications, and another patient’s information in the background.
- Unneeded health information: diagnoses, prescriptions, test results, and visit history that the recipient does not need to answer the question.
Keep enough readable context to make the image useful, but no more. Apple’s Markup controls include opacity and thickness adjustments; Google Photos documents markup and saving an edited copy. A solid cover is a practical way to obscure visible text, not a guarantee that every edit or copy has been irreversibly removed from every app or device.

Inspect and share the edited copy
- Save the redacted image as an edited copy rather than selecting the untouched original.
- Open the saved copy and zoom in. Check every edge, the covered areas, and the rest of the screen for names, numbers, codes, notifications, or unrelated clinical details.
- Where the editor offers it, make sure the markup is flattened into the image before sharing; editing workflows differ, so do not assume a markup layer cannot be changed or removed.
- Send the image only to the intended recipient using the channel recommended by the hospital or recipient. Remove unnecessary extra copies when appropriate, including copies in trash or recently deleted folders.
Indian privacy guidance and hospital instructions
The National Health Authority’s beneficiary Data Privacy Policy defines de-identification as removing, obscuring, redacting, or delinking personally identifiable information in a manner intended to eliminate the risk of unintended disclosure of health records. It also calls for reasonable efforts to limit beneficiary information used or disclosed to what is minimum necessary for patient care. These are useful minimization principles, but they do not certify that a particular screenshot edit is risk-free or provide a screenshot-specific tutorial. Read the NHA Data Privacy Policy.
Hospital sharing instructions can differ. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s 11 February 2022 release says the Patients’ Rights Charter was shared with State and Union Territory governments, which are responsible for adoption, implementation, and monitoring where applicable. It does not establish one uniform screenshot-sharing rule for every hospital or state. Follow the portal’s terms and the hospital’s directions for sending records. The screenshot button combination does not work
On iPhone, verify the button combination for your model. On Android, Power plus Volume Down is common, but manufacturer menus and gestures vary. Consult Apple’s or Google’s linked device instructions, or the phone manufacturer’s guide.

The screenshot includes too much of the portal
Retake it with the page positioned on the relevant content, then crop away unnecessary surroundings. If scrolling capture is unavoidable, inspect the entire resulting image for other visits or records before editing and sharing.
Covered text still appears readable
Replace a translucent mark, highlighter, or incomplete scribble with a solid opaque shape that fully covers the text. Save the edited copy and inspect it at high zoom.
The markup seems editable or the original is still available
Use the editor’s option to save/export a flattened copy if offered, then reopen the exported image. Share that copy rather than an editable project or the unmodified screenshot. Delete unneeded duplicates where appropriate.
The screenshot is hard to read after cropping
Retake the screenshot with the relevant result larger on screen, or crop less while covering unrelated details. Preserve only the context the recipient needs to interpret the image.
