The screenshot step does not authenticate you or call a bank API. Since no specific bank or API is named, permission, login steps, and available API access must be confirmed with that bank.
First clarify what “with an API” means
An OTP login screen, an OTP service API, and an API that returns banking information after authentication are different things. Taking a browser screenshot records what the page displays; it does not itself validate an OTP or grant access to a bank API.

For example, HDFC Bank’s API portal describes an OTP product with generation and validation APIs. Its documented flow sends an OTP to the customer’s registered mobile number and returns a token after validation for a subsequent API call. That is one bank’s offering, not evidence that it is the API used by an unnamed webpage or that it provides access to internet banking. HDFC Bank API Portal
NPCI’s BASE circular describes a separate journey: a user provides an Aadhaar number on the BASE webpage, gives consent, completes a CAPTCHA, and enters an OTP sent for UIDAI validation; after successful validation, BASE obtains linked-bank-account information through its API process. The Reserve Bank of India’s Authentication Mechanisms Directions, 2025, dated September 25, 2025, state that digital payment transactions in India are required to meet two factors of authentication and list SMS OTP among potential factors. Use an authorized, low-risk workflow
- Confirm permission and the target environment. Check the bank’s terms and the owner’s authorization before automating access. Prefer a bank-approved sandbox and test credentials when available. Do not assume that a production login may be automated.
- Complete the ordinary OTP flow. Open the bank’s expected interface and enter the OTP through the normal user flow. Do not intercept, replay, generate, or bypass OTPs, CAPTCHAs, or other access controls. Do not make a payment or account change merely to produce an image.
- Open the exact page to document. After login, navigate to the page state needed for the screenshot. Review what is visible and mask or remove account numbers, names, balances, transaction identifiers, OTPs, and other personal or financial data before sharing the image.
- Capture only what is needed. Use the browser’s screenshot function or authorized browser automation. Choose a viewport capture for the visible screen or a full-page capture for the whole scrollable page.
- Protect both output and session data. Store screenshots and any saved authenticated browser state in restricted locations, keep them out of version control, and delete them when they are no longer needed.
Capture a screenshot with Playwright
Playwright documents page.screenshot() as the browser capture method. The examples below show the capture step after your authorized login and navigation; they do not automate the OTP or establish that a bank permits Playwright.

Minimal runnable Node.js example with a manual login pause
Install Playwright with npm install playwright. This script opens a browser for you to complete the normal login yourself, waits for you to press Enter after reaching the page, and then captures the viewport. It does not attempt to read or submit an OTP.

Choose between viewport and full-page capture

Handle authenticated browser state as a credential
If a permitted testing workflow saves browser state to avoid repeating login, protect that file as carefully as a credential. Playwright warns that a state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could impersonate you or your test account. Its authentication guidance recommends keeping state files in an ignored authentication directory rather than committing them to a repository. Restrict access, retain the file only as long as needed, and delete it when finished. Playwright authentication documentation

A screenshot can also be sensitive even when it contains no active session data: account details, balances, names, and transaction identifiers can reveal private financial information.

- The page redirects to login or shows an access error: the session may have expired, or the bank may restrict the access method. Return to the bank’s normal login flow if authorized, or ask the bank or environment owner for the supported test procedure. Do not attempt to defeat the restriction.
- The screenshot is blank or captures the wrong state: confirm that the page reached the intended state before capture. In the example, wait until you have completed login and navigated manually before pressing Enter. Avoid triggering a banking action just to make content appear.
- The full-page image contains more than expected: use a viewport capture instead, or review and redact the full image before sharing it.
- The script cannot open the target: check that Playwright is installed, the URL is the correct bank-approved address, and your environment can reach it. A bank-specific browser requirement or access policy may need to be handled with the bank’s support.
- You are considering a saved session file: do so only if allowed by the bank and necessary for the authorized workflow. Treat it as an impersonation-capable credential, exclude it from version control, restrict access, and remove it afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API complete an Indian bank OTP login for me?
A screenshot API captures a page; it is not a substitute for the bank’s authentication flow. Use the bank’s authorized login interface and confirm that any automation is permitted.
Does the RBI two-factor rule mean I can automate a bank login?
No. The RBI’s 2025 Directions describe authentication requirements for digital payment transactions; they do not grant permission to automate a particular bank’s website.
