To capture an infinite-scroll page in Playwright, first trigger the page to load the content you want, then take the screenshot. page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) captures the full currently scrollable page; it does not make the site load items that have not appeared yet.
Load the content before taking a full-page screenshot
Playwright’s scrolling guide identifies manually scrolling as a way to force an infinite list to load more elements. The right approach depends on how the target site works: it may load items as the document moves, or use a separately scrollable list. Identify the element that actually scrolls, then repeat the site’s loading trigger until the content you need is present.
This TypeScript example is an adaptable pattern, not a universal end-of-list detector. It assumes a list with a test ID of results and item elements with the class item. Replace those selectors and the stopping condition with ones that match the page.
const list = page.getByTestId('results');
let previousCount = 0;
let unchangedPasses = 0;
while (unchangedPasses < 3) {
const count = await list.locator('.item').count();
unchangedPasses = count === previousCount ? unchangedPasses + 1 : 0;
previousCount = count;
await list.evaluate(element => {
element.scrollTop = element.scrollHeight;
});
await page.waitForTimeout(500); // Replace with a site-specific load signal when available.
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true });
The example stops after three consecutive checks with no item-count increase. A stable count can be misleading: the site may be slow, may require another trigger, or may have reached a temporary pause. Prefer a condition tied to observed behavior—such as a terminal marker, the disappearance of a loading indicator, or a known item count—when the site exposes one. The fixed 500 ms wait is only a placeholder, not a guarantee that loading has finished.

Choose the scrolling method that matches the page
Document-level scrolling
If the document itself scrolls and the page loads more items near the bottom, bring a suitable bottom element into view to trigger loading:
await page.getByText('Footer text').scrollIntoViewIfNeeded();
Use an element that exists at the point where another batch should load; the example text is illustrative.
Nested scroll containers
If an inner list owns the scrollbar, scrolling the window or document may do nothing. Target that container instead. Playwright documents hovering a nested container before sending wheel input:

const results = page.getByTestId('results');
await results.hover();
await page.mouse.wheel(0, 800);
You can also set the container’s scroll position directly:
await results.evaluate(element => {
element.scrollTop += 800;
});
These methods are alternatives, not steps that must all be run. Choose the one that matches the page’s behavior and repeat it as needed while checking whether new content has loaded. Playwright’s locator approach is useful on changing pages because a locator resolves its matching element when used.

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true });
This captures the page’s current scrollable extent; it does not trigger additional infinite-scroll loads by itself.
Separate viewport images
For a very long list, or when you need to inspect sections independently, capture viewport-sized images at successive scroll positions instead. This is an implementation choice rather than a special Playwright requirement. It can make individual sections easier to review, but you must manage the scroll positions and output files yourself.

Make visual captures more repeatable
Screenshot rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For visual comparisons, keep the execution environment consistent. Playwright also documents screenshot animation controls, and its visual-comparison guidance describes using a stylesheet to hide or alter dynamic elements when they make comparisons less repeatable.
These controls can reduce incidental visual changes, but they do not replace loading the intended list content or using a site-appropriate completion condition.
Troubleshoot missing or incomplete content
- The screenshot contains only the first batch:
fullPagecaptures what is currently loaded. Trigger further loading before capturing, then verify the item count or another page-specific signal. - Scrolling has no effect: Find whether the document or an inner container owns scrolling. For a nested list, target its locator with wheel input or change its
scrollTop. - The loop stops too early: A few unchanged item counts do not prove the list is finished. Use a terminal marker, loading indicator, known count, or other observed state if available; adjust the retry logic to the site’s actual behavior.
- The loop never finishes: Some feeds keep loading indefinitely or change content continuously. Set a site-specific limit, such as a target item count or maximum number of scroll passes, and decide what content the capture must include.
- The final items are absent despite scrolling: Confirm that the selected container is correct and that the loading trigger actually moves it. Replace a fixed delay with a wait for a relevant request or visible loading state when the page provides a reliable signal.
- Visual baselines differ between runs: Check for changes in the browser and host environment, and consider the documented animation controls or stylesheet adjustments for dynamic elements.

Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
