How to Screenshot a Website With Cookie Banners Hidden for Documentation

Hide a site-specific cookie banner for a clean screenshot using Playwright or developer tools, while keeping visual documentation separate from consent evidence.

For repeatable documentation, use Playwright’s screenshot-time style option to hide the specific cookie-banner element on the page. It changes the screenshot without permanently changing the site’s styles, but it does not record a consent choice. For a one-off capture, inspect and temporarily hide the banner in browser developer tools. If you are documenting consent behavior rather than page layout, use the site’s own consent controls and inspect the resulting cookie state separately.

Choose the right method for the documentation

First decide what the image needs to prove. Hiding a banner is appropriate when the aim is to show page layout without an overlay. It is not evidence that a visitor accepted or rejected cookies. If consent behavior is the subject, interact with the banner’s actual controls and examine the resulting state separately.

Method Best for Effect on the screenshot Does it record consent?
Temporarily hide the element in developer tools One-off manual documentation Removes the selected element from the rendered view No
Playwright screenshot-time style Repeatable automated captures Applies temporary CSS while the screenshot is made No
Playwright mask Obscuring or redacting a known element Places a colored overlay over its bounding box; it does not show what is underneath No
Use the banner’s own controls Consent-flow documentation or testing Dismisses the banner according to the chosen control May update site or browser state; inspect the result

How to hide the banner in Playwright

Use a selector that matches the visible banner on the specific site. There is no universal selector that reliably targets every consent-management system. Playwright’s screenshot-time style option applies CSS during capture; the API reference marks this option as added in Playwright v1.41. It can reach Shadow DOM and inner frames.

1. Inspect the banner and choose a precise selector

Load the target page and inspect the visible banner’s outer element. Pick a selector specific enough not to hide useful page content. Replace .site-specific-consent-banner below with the selector you verified on that page.

2. Capture the page with temporary CSS

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  fullPage: true,
  style: '.site-specific-consent-banner { display: none !important; }'
});

This example uses the documented screenshot API; the selector is illustrative, not verified for any particular website. Set fullPage: true when the documentation needs the full page rather than only the visible viewport. The stylesheet applies for the screenshot and does not permanently edit the site’s styles.

3. Review the image

  • Check that the banner is gone and the intended page content remains.
  • Look for layout changes caused by removing a fixed or page-flow element.
  • Check for additional overlays that use different elements or selectors.
  • If nothing changed, the selector may not match the banner. Inspect the live page again rather than broadening the selector blindly.

How to hide a banner for a one-off manual screenshot

  1. Open the page and use browser developer tools to inspect the visible banner’s outer element.
  2. Temporarily hide that element in the developer tools so you can verify the result on the rendered page.
  3. Confirm that the change removes only the banner, not useful content.
  4. Use the browser’s screenshot workflow to capture the page, then review the image.

The temporary visual change does not itself accept or reject cookies. Browser developer tools also let you inspect, edit, and delete cookies; Chrome documents those controls and a Privacy panel for temporarily limiting third-party cookies during testing.

When to use Playwright’s mask instead

Use mask when the goal is to obscure the banner’s area, for example to redact content. A mask places a colored overlay on the element’s bounding box; it does not remove the banner to reveal the page behind it. For a clean view of underlying page content, use a precise screenshot-time CSS rule instead.

What hiding a banner does—and does not—say about privacy

A clean screenshot is a visual record, not proof of a consent action or a guarantee about tracking. Chrome’s documentation provides ways to inspect cookie state and test third-party-cookie restrictions, which are separate from hiding an element for capture.

A 2024 study by Andrei Demir and coauthors measured six cookie-banner interaction tools across 298,000 pages on 30,000 websites. Under the study’s tested conditions, an extension that allowed all cookies was associated with up to a 60% increase in tracking requests. Those results apply to the tools, configurations, sites, and measurement setup studied; they are not a universal prediction for every extension or website. The study illustrates why removing a banner from an image should not be treated as evidence of a particular privacy outcome.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that still shows the banner

  • The CSS has no effect: verify that the selector matches the visible banner on the loaded page. Consent platforms vary, so a selector copied from another site may not apply.
  • Part of the banner remains: inspect which element is still visible. The banner may have nested elements or multiple overlays that need separate, precise selectors.
  • Page content disappears too: the selector is too broad. Target the banner’s own element rather than a parent container that also contains page content.
  • The screenshot is visually blocked: if you used mask, remember that it covers the element’s bounding box rather than exposing what lies behind it.
  • You need to prove a consent choice: stop treating a hide rule as a substitute for interaction. Use the site’s consent controls, then inspect the resulting cookie state.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; the API accepts a URL and supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP output. Its capture workflow can accept cookie/consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For a basic capture, replace YOUR_API_KEY with your access key and change the target URL if needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
