How to Screenshot a Website on Chromebook (Visible Screen or Full Webpage)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To screenshot a website on a Chromebook, open it in Chrome and use ChromeOS Screen Capture. Choose full screen, partial, or window. If you need one image containing the entire page—including content below the fold—use Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command instead.

Choose the right Chromebook screenshot method

What you need Best method What it captures
The whole Chromebook display ChromeOS Screen Capture — full screen Everything currently visible on the display
A portion of the webpage ChromeOS Screen Capture — partial The rectangle you drag around
Only the Chrome window ChromeOS Screen Capture — window The selected application window
The complete webpage, including content below the viewport Chrome DevTools — Capture a full size screenshot The page from top to bottom as one image

The ordinary Screen Capture tool is for the current display, a region, or a window. It does not replace DevTools when you need a long, full-page image.

Take a normal screenshot of a website

1. Open the page

Launch Chrome, navigate to the website, and wait until the part you want to preserve is visible. Close menus or overlays that you do not want in the image.

2. Open Screen Capture

Use whichever method matches your Chromebook:

  • Press the dedicated Screenshot key, if your keyboard has one.
  • Open Quick Settings by selecting the area at the bottom right of the screen, then select Screen Capture.
  • Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key has a rectangle with two vertical lines.
  • With an external keyboard that has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative.

On a Chromebook tablet, the hardware shortcut is Power + Volume down. If a shortcut does not match your keyboard, use Quick Settings or the Screenshot key.

  • Chrome OS: Chromebook is a computer for the way the modern world works, with thousands of apps. Enjoy the seamless simplicity that comes with Google Chrome and Android apps, all integrated into one laptop. It’s fast, simple, and secure.

3. Select Screenshot and a capture scope

In the capture toolbar, select Screenshot, then choose one of these modes:

  • Full screen: captures the complete display exactly as it appears, including the browser chrome and any other visible windows.
  • Partial: lets you drag over a specific part of the webpage. Release the pointer when the selection covers the content you need.
  • Window: captures the Chrome window you select instead of the entire display.

Confirm the capture using the on-screen control. For a partial capture, keep the pointer outside the selection until you have finished dragging so the boundary is placed accurately.

4. Find or paste the image

ChromeOS saves ordinary screenshots in Downloads by default. Google also says screenshots are copied to the clipboard automatically, so you can paste the result directly into an email, document, chat, or image editor. Screen Capture settings let you choose a different save folder if Downloads is not suitable.

Capture an entire webpage in one image

A page that continues below the visible browser window requires Chrome DevTools. This is the practical route for an article, dashboard, documentation page, or landing page that must be delivered as one tall image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the target page in Chrome.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + I to open DevTools.
  3. Enable the device toolbar (device mode) if it is not already active.
  4. Open the device toolbar’s More options menu.
  5. Select Capture a full size screenshot.

Chrome captures the whole page, including content that is not visible in the current viewport. The result is downloaded as an image. The menu wording and placement can move slightly as Chrome changes, but the command remains part of the device-mode workflow.

When full-size capture is the better choice

  • You need one file for a page that is several screen heights long.
  • You are documenting a complete layout for a bug report or design review.
  • You need content below the fold without manually stitching multiple screenshots.
  • You want the webpage itself rather than a screenshot of the entire Chromebook display.

When not to use it

Use regular Screen Capture when you only need what is visible, a small region, or a single Chrome window. DevTools adds extra steps and can produce a very tall file that is inconvenient to view or share.

Fix common Chromebook screenshot problems

The keyboard shortcut does nothing

Keyboard layouts differ. Try the Screenshot key, then Quick Settings → Screen Capture. On an external keyboard without Show windows, use Ctrl + Shift + F5. On a tablet, use Power + Volume down.

I captured the wrong area

Choose Partial and drag again, starting just outside the desired corner. For a clean browser-only image, choose Window rather than Full screen; full screen includes everything visible on the display.

The file is not in Downloads

Open the Files app and check Downloads first. If it is missing, review the Screen Capture save-folder setting; a previous change may direct new captures elsewhere. Because the image is copied to the clipboard automatically, paste it into a document to confirm that the capture succeeded.

The full-page command is missing

Make sure DevTools is open with Ctrl + Shift + I and that the device toolbar is enabled. The Capture a full size screenshot command is in the device toolbar’s More options menu, not in the standard ChromeOS Screen Capture toolbar.

The page looks incomplete

For a normal screenshot, scroll the page until the required content is visible and capture each region separately, or use full-size DevTools capture. Pages that load content only after scrolling may need a moment to finish rendering before you invoke the command.

The image is difficult to share

A full-page capture can be extremely tall. For a quick message, use a partial or window capture instead. For documentation, keep the original image and resize a copy so text remains readable.

Keep captures clear and useful

  • Wait for the page to finish loading before capturing; otherwise you may preserve a spinner or partially rendered section.
  • Close cookie notices, chat bubbles, and menus when they obscure the content you are documenting.
  • Use partial capture for a focused explanation and full-page capture when context from the whole page matters.
  • Remember that full-screen mode can include personal tabs, notifications, or other windows. Check the frame before sharing.
  • For long pages, expect a taller file and verify that sticky headers or lazy-loaded sections appear as intended.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need repeatable website images from a script, build pipeline, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept cookie and consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are free, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

One-call cURL example

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python example

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js example

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Options for production captures

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a single element selected by CSS selector, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, and retina scale. You can request PDF paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges; render supplied HTML/CSS; run custom JavaScript; click an element before capture; hide selectors; and wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle.

For controlled network behavior, you can block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types and provide custom headers, cookies, a user agent, or an Authorization value. Timezone and geolocation settings help reproduce regional pages. Transparent backgrounds, image resizing, user-selected cache TTLs, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification are also available. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs work as well, which can simplify migration.

Cost and reliability

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are:

Plan Included shots Price
Starter 3,000 $5
Growth 15,000 $15
Pro 60,000 $39
Scale 250,000 $99
Business 1,000,000 $249

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Set a practical timeout, use caching when a page does not change, and inspect the verdict and billing headers when diagnosing a failed automation run.

API troubleshooting

  • Unauthorized response: replace YOUR_API_KEY with an active access key and keep it server-side rather than exposing it in public page code.
  • Unexpected blank or blocked result: inspect X-Page-Verdict; bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are identified and not billed.
  • Missing dynamic content: add an appropriate selector wait, delay, or network-idle wait, and enable lazy-image loading for long pages.
  • Unwanted overlays: enable the consent, popup, or chat cleanup behavior, or hide a specific selector before capture.

To try it, create a free ScreenshotNeo account with 1,000 screenshots a month and no card required.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Chromebook screenshot include the browser address bar?

A full-screen capture includes whatever is visible on the display, including Chrome’s interface. A partial capture can exclude it, while a window capture limits the image to the selected window.

Can I change where ChromeOS saves screenshots?

Yes. Open Screen Capture settings and choose another save folder; new captures then use that location instead of the default Downloads folder.

Is a full-page screenshot the same as a PDF?

No. DevTools’ full-size command creates one tall image. A PDF is a separate document format and requires a PDF-capable workflow such as a print dialog or an API that supports PDF output.
