Open the dropdown first, then capture the smallest area that contains the complete menu. Use a viewport screenshot when the surrounding page matters, an area or element capture for a tight image, and a full-page capture only when readers need the menu shown in the page’s larger context. For hover menus that vanish, delay the capture in Firefox or force :hover in Chrome DevTools.
Choose the capture scope before opening the menu
A dropdown is part of the webpage’s rendered content, so browser screenshot tools can capture it once it is open. The right mode depends on what the image must prove.
| Goal | Best mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Show the menu and the control that opened it | Visible viewport | Preserves the current page context. |
| Share only the menu and nearby content | Area or element capture | Removes unrelated page content. |
| Document the menu in a long page | Full-page capture | Includes content beyond the viewport, although the menu may be small in the final image. |
| Capture a menu that appears on hover | Delayed capture or forced hover state | Prevents the menu from closing before the screenshot is taken. |
If “dropdown” means a browser-toolbar menu rather than a control inside the webpage, these page tools may not include it. Use your operating system’s screen-capture function for the browser window instead.
Chrome: capture an open dropdown
Visible viewport
- Open the page and click the dropdown so its options are visible.
- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Option+I on macOS.
- Turn on Device Mode if it is not already active.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu and choose Capture screenshot. Chrome saves the currently visible viewport.
Chrome documents this viewport command and the related full-size command in its Device Mode guide. Device Mode can change the viewport and device scale, so set those values first if you need a reproducible image.

Full page
- Open the dropdown and leave it visible if the menu remains open while DevTools has focus.
- In Device Mode, open More options.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
This includes content outside the viewport. A fixed or floating menu can be positioned differently in a stitched full-page image, so use a viewport or area capture when the menu itself is the subject.
Capture a selected area
- Open the dropdown.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type screenshot.
- Select Capture area screenshot, then drag around the complete menu and enough of its trigger to identify it.
Chrome’s Command Menu documentation notes that area capture does not work while DevTools is undocked. Dock DevTools, repeat the command, and drag again if the option fails.
Hold a hover menu open
- Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
- Locate the element that owns the hover menu. Right-click it.
- Choose Force State > :hover.
- With the menu rendered, use Capture screenshot, Capture area screenshot, or Capture node screenshot.
The Chrome DOM guide describes forcing pseudo-classes. Some sites use JavaScript rather than CSS hover alone; in that case, move the pointer over the control and capture immediately, or use Firefox’s delayed command.

Capture the dropdown’s DOM node
In Elements, right-click the menu node and choose Capture node screenshot. This is useful for a menu whose bounding box is known in the DOM, but it requires finding the correct node. A hidden template node, rather than the visible menu, can produce an empty or irrelevant image.
Firefox: use the built-in screenshot controls
Visible, region, or full page
- Open the dropdown.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+S (macOS).
- Choose Save visible for the viewport, drag a region around the menu, select an automatically highlighted page part, or choose Save full page.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
Mozilla lists these choices in its Firefox screenshot help. For a tight menu image, drag from just above the trigger to just below the final option; leave a small margin so shadows and focus outlines are not clipped.
Enable the full-page and node tools in DevTools
To add the full-page screenshot button, open DevTools, select Settings > Available Toolbox Buttons, and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. In the Inspector, right-click a selected element and choose Screenshot Node to capture that element.

Delay capture for a transient menu
Firefox’s Web Console provides a screenshot helper. For a menu that opens after a hover or click, run:
:screenshot --delay 2 --filename dropdown.png
Move to or click the control, then run the command while the menu is open. Increase --delay if the interaction needs more time. The documented command also accepts --dpr for device-pixel ratio, --fullpage for a full-page image, and --selector to limit the capture to an element and its descendants. For example:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute:screenshot --delay 1 --selector ".account-menu" --filename account-menu.png
Use a selector that matches the visible menu, not merely its trigger. Mozilla warns that reusing a filename overwrites the earlier image, so choose a new filename for each attempt. See the complete Firefox DevTools screenshot reference.

Make a dropdown screenshot readable and repeatable
Keep the state visible
- Open the menu before invoking the capture command.
- For click menus, avoid clicking elsewhere between opening and capture.
- For hover menus, keep the pointer over the trigger or force
:hover. - If the menu closes when DevTools gains focus, use a delayed command or keyboard navigation instead of switching windows repeatedly.
Choose viewport dimensions deliberately
Responsive navigation often changes at a breakpoint. Set the same viewport width, height, zoom, and device scale before each capture. A narrow viewport may turn a desktop dropdown into a hamburger menu; a short height may clip the final options. Capture at 100% browser zoom unless you are documenting an accessibility or scaling issue.
Include enough context
A menu-only crop is efficient for a bug report, but it can hide which control owns the menu. Include the trigger, its label, and a small amount of surrounding page when the screenshot will be read without the live site. Use full page only when page location or layout is part of the evidence.
Check the output
- Verify every option is visible and text is not clipped.
- Check that a focus ring, hover highlight, or selected state is intentional.
- Inspect the bottom edge for a scrollbar or shadow that was cut off.
- Open the saved file to confirm the format and pixel dimensions before attaching it to a ticket.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The menu is missing | It closed when focus moved to DevTools or the pointer left the trigger. | Use Firefox --delay, force Chrome :hover, or capture immediately after opening. |
| Only part of the menu appears | The viewport or crop is too short. | Increase viewport height, scroll the menu if it has its own scroll area, or capture the menu node/region. |
| Chrome says area capture is unavailable | DevTools is undocked. | Dock DevTools, then rerun the Command Menu command. |
| The image shows a blank or hidden element | The selected DOM node is a template or has display:none. |
Select the currently rendered menu node and confirm its computed visibility. |
| A full-page image places the menu oddly | Stitching and fixed-position behavior changed its placement. | Use a visible viewport or area capture instead. |
| The latest Firefox file replaced the previous one | The same filename was reused. | Pass a unique --filename for each capture. |
| Text differs between attempts | Responsive layout, zoom, or device scale changed. | Record and restore viewport, zoom, and device-scale settings. |
Automate the capture instead of operating a browser
Manual DevTools workflows are best for a one-off explanation or bug report. For documentation builds, regression checks, or many URLs, an HTTP screenshot service can open each page with consistent settings. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try here because it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers the lowest paid plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its controls include viewport and device presets, full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks before capture, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, and hiding selectors. For a dropdown, the practical sequence is to click the trigger (or run JavaScript that opens it), wait briefly, then capture the menu selector.

Which method should you use?
- One visible menu: use Firefox Take Screenshot or Chrome viewport capture.
- A clean crop: use Chrome Capture area screenshot or Firefox’s dragged region.
- A specific rendered element: use Chrome Capture node screenshot or Firefox Screenshot Node.
- A hover menu that disappears: use Firefox
--delayor Chrome Force State >:hover. - Many pages or repeatable builds: automate the interaction and capture with ScreenshotNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a browser screenshot include a native HTML select menu?
Usually not reliably. A native select popup may be drawn by the operating system rather than the webpage; capture the closed control or use the operating system’s window screenshot while the popup is open.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does my dropdown screenshot show a different menu on mobile?
The page is responsive. Match the target device’s viewport width and device scale before opening the menu, or capture a desktop and mobile state separately.
What image format should I use?
Use PNG when text clarity and lossless edges matter, JPEG for smaller photographic images, and WebP when your destination supports it. Choose PDF when the deliverable is a paginated document rather than a single image.
