Choose Rectangular snip, drag around the area you need, then release. The image is copied to the clipboard and opened in Snipping Tool, where you can paste it with Ctrl+V or save it with Save as.
This method captures content currently displayed on your screen. It does not automatically include content farther down a long, scrolling page.
Capture a web-page portion with Windows+Shift+S
- Open the page in Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or another Windows browser.
- Scroll and resize the browser until the text, image, form, or other content you want is visible. Close menus or overlays that should not appear in the image.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft describes this as opening the Snipping Tool overlay for an image snapshot (Microsoft Support).
- On the toolbar, select Rectangular snip if it is not already selected.
- Click and drag from one corner of the desired page area to the opposite corner. Release the mouse button to take the snip.
- Click the notification or Snipping Tool window if you want to annotate or save the image. Otherwise, switch to a document, email, chat, or image editor and press Ctrl+V to paste the clipboard copy.
- In Snipping Tool, use the save control or Save as to choose a filename, format, and folder.
Rectangular selection is normally best for web content because it follows the page layout and includes only the pixels inside your selection. The overlay can also offer Freeform snip, which lets you draw an irregular outline when a rectangle would include unwanted material. Microsoft’s documented workflow covers screen-area captures rather than a scrolling, full-page web capture.
Rectangular versus freeform snips

For a clean article excerpt, select slightly beyond the final line so letters are not clipped, then crop further in an editor if necessary.

What happens after you release the mouse
The selected region is copied to the clipboard and made available in Snipping Tool. Paste it immediately with Ctrl+V into an app that accepts images. If you need a permanent file, use Snipping Tool’s save command rather than relying on the clipboard, which is replaced by your next copy operation. Save as is the dependable way to control the destination and filename because Windows interface details and automatic-save behavior can change between releases. PNG is a practical choice for text and interface screenshots; JPEG can produce a smaller file for photographic material.
Shortcuts for other screenshot needs

Windows+PrtScn is not a substitute for a region snip: it captures the whole display and may include private notifications, other windows, or a second monitor.

When the visible-region method is not enough
You need content below the viewport
Windows+Shift+S selects pixels currently displayed. To document a long page, capture several sections while scrolling and combine them in an image editor, or use a browser feature or service specifically designed for full-page capture. Do not assume the Snipping Tool region overlay will scroll through the page for you.
You need the original page at a repeatable size
A screen snip reflects your monitor, browser zoom, window position, display scaling, and visible UI. For a repeatable developer workflow, a screenshot API can render a URL at a defined viewport instead of depending on a person’s screen.

Troubleshooting Windows region captures
The overlay does not appear
- Make sure the browser has focus, then press the three keys together again.
- Open Start and launch Snipping Tool directly, then choose its screenshot or new-snip control.
- If the keyboard has no PrtScn key, that does not prevent Windows+Shift+S; the Fn+Windows+Space alternative applies to print-screen hardware, not the region shortcut.
The wrong area was selected
- Press Esc before dragging and start again.
- Zoom the browser or maximize it so the target is easier to outline, while remembering that zoom changes the captured pixels.
- Drag from outside the content inward if a precise corner is difficult, then use an editor to crop.
The paste is blank or missing
- Wait for the snip notification to finish, then copy again from Snipping Tool.
- Paste into an image-capable app; plain-text fields cannot display image clipboard data.
- Save the snip as a file and insert that file when the destination blocks clipboard images.
Text looks blurry or too small
A screen capture cannot contain more detail than the displayed pixels. Increase browser zoom, enlarge the window, or use a higher-resolution display before capturing. For a production asset, use a URL-rendering workflow with an explicit viewport and device scale instead of relying on monitor scaling.
