For a repeatable workflow, keep capture and upload as separate steps: capture failures can be logged per URL, while Drive uploads can be retried independently. Google Drive API batch requests do not combine screenshot media uploads into one request.
Choose what each screenshot should show
Playwright can capture the visible viewport or the full scrollable page. A viewport screenshot records what is visible without scrolling; a full-page screenshot creates a taller image that includes the page’s scrollable content. Use the option that matches the record you need, since full-page images can be much larger and may not represent a single screen view.

The Playwright screenshot API supports saving directly to a file with page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }), setting fullPage: true, or returning screenshot bytes in a buffer. It does not provide a single built-in operation that accepts a list of URLs and handles the whole capture-and-upload workflow; the loop, readiness checks, file naming, and error handling belong in your script. Capture a URL list with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. It reads one URL per line from urls.txt, opens each page, and saves a separate PNG in a local screenshots directory. The numeric prefix prevents two URLs with the same hostname from overwriting each other.

The script uses the load navigation state and a 30-second timeout as practical defaults, not universal readiness guarantees. Pages that render important content after load may need a site-specific wait, such as waiting for a known selector. Avoid assuming that one fixed delay works for every target.

Make output names useful and safe
The example uses stable sequence numbers, which are safe for arbitrary URL paths and unique within the input list. If you want filenames that identify pages, derive a label from the hostname or path, sanitize characters that are unsafe in filenames, and retain a unique index or other collision-proof suffix. Do not use the raw URL as a path: URLs can contain slashes, query strings, and characters unsuitable for filenames.
Handle partial failures deliberately
A failed navigation should not silently stop the rest of the batch. The example records each failure and continues; review the final JSON output and rerun failed URLs after addressing their cause. If a capture is important, retain the URL-to-filename mapping alongside the images so you can identify which output belongs to which input.
Upload the screenshots to Drive
Manual upload in Google Drive
For a small, occasional batch, open the destination folder in Google Drive and select the screenshot files through Drive’s upload interface. You can also automate a compatible HTML file input with Playwright’s setInputFiles(), which accepts multiple file paths in one call. That works only when the upload flow exposes an input that accepts those files; verify the actual interface rather than assuming every Drive UI flow supports scripted multi-file selection. Programmatic upload with the Drive API
For a fully automated pipeline, upload each image using Google Drive’s file upload API. Google documents three upload approaches:

These size and method recommendations come from Google’s Drive upload documentation. A robust API workflow also needs OAuth authorization with permission to write to the destination Drive, a folder ID if saving into a specific folder, and a record of each created file’s ID and upload result. The exact implementation depends on your authentication setup and whether the destination is a user’s Drive or a shared drive.
Recover interrupted resumable uploads
Google’s resumable upload flow lets a client resume after a communication failure. Start a session and preserve the returned session URI; send file data to that URI with PUT requests. If the transfer stops, query the session for its status and use the server-reported Range to determine how many bytes it accepted. A 308 Resume Incomplete response means the upload has not finished; continue from the server-reported position rather than assuming the most recently sent chunk was received. The session URI is valid for one week, after which a new session is needed. Consult Google’s resumable upload guidance for the current request details.

What “batch upload” means in the Drive API
There are two separate batches in this workflow: your script’s list of URLs, and the screenshot files you upload. Drive API batch requests group eligible API calls to reduce connection overhead, but they do not batch media uploads or downloads. Google documents a maximum of 100 calls in a batch request and explicitly excludes media transfers; each screenshot’s bytes still require an individual upload operation. Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Capture time varies by target. Page size, scripts, network conditions, and site-specific rendering affect how long navigation and screenshot capture take. The reviewed documentation does not establish one universally correct wait condition or concurrency level.
- Start with sequential capture. The example processes one URL at a time, making failures easier to attribute and limiting resource use. If you later add concurrency, tune it against the target sites and your machine rather than treating a particular number of parallel pages as universally safe.
- Keep capture and upload status separate. Record which URLs produced files and which Drive uploads succeeded. Then you can retry only the failed stage instead of recapturing every page.
- Expect larger full-page files. Full-page screenshots include scrollable content and can produce larger images than viewport captures; choose the scope and output format based on what you need to preserve.
- Do not mistake API batching for lower media-upload count. Eligible metadata calls can be grouped, but screenshot contents still upload individually.
Troubleshooting common problems
The browser cannot open a URL
Check that the URL includes a scheme such as https://, that it is reachable from the machine running Playwright, and that the page is not timing out or redirecting unexpectedly. The example logs the failure and continues to the next URL; adjust the timeout or wait condition only for pages whose behavior warrants it.
A screenshot is blank or missing page content
The page may render key content after the navigation event used by the script. Wait for a page-specific selector that signals the content is ready, or use an appropriate navigation wait state for that site. A longer fixed delay is not a universal fix and adds time to every capture.

One screenshot replaced another
Two captures used the same path. Give every URL a unique output name, such as the indexed filenames in the example, and confirm that the destination directory is not reused by another process.
Drive rejects or interrupts an upload
Confirm that the credentials are authorized to create files in the target location and that the request follows the selected upload method. For an interrupted resumable transfer, query session status and resume at the server-reported byte range; do not resend based only on the last local chunk position.
A Drive API batch request does not upload images
This is expected: Drive batch requests do not support media upload or download. Send a separate media upload for each screenshot; reserve batching for API calls that Google’s documentation identifies as eligible.
